Haven't read the middle yet, but loveda luv. LOL You are one of probably a hand full of bracket racers I've heard of that spray up the difference. I do it too, came from my street racing days. The first 60' n the last 60' is all that matters. the other 540' (1200') we just along for the ride. Heard the 275 stuff is getting big out your way, wish it'd catch on out here.

I probably should have left that part out , but for the hand full of people that find this thread i'll probably never race any of them . I like the spray . I have the patience to make sure my tuneup is correct and spot on so it works for me . And yes the 275 deal is big . The 5.80 index is huge down here too.

Re: New project

Fianlly got one . I recently came across a deal on a Strange aluminum 9 inch center with 4.56 gears , daytona pinion support , 1350 billet yoke and 31 spline spool . I swapped it it and the truck just kinda moved to my spot on the tree . Lights are way better , Powerglide is consistant and i was focused . I had all hard races and every round was with someone higher than me in points .

I see the 4.56s ended up working out for you!! Did things change quite a bit after Friday night? I know you said it was inconsistent at first with the gear change

Let me ask a laymen question.

What does it take to get a Wally?

I really don't know much about it, other than whatever it is, it's support to be very had to get.

Congrats on all your success! :metal:

Saturday is a sportsmens challenge . Meaning a bracket race where the winner gets a Wally . It will bring alot of people that dont normally run our program out so we will probably have a huge field of cars . They are hard to get . Usually you have to win a divisional to get one . Every once in a while they randomly select races to have one at .

Re: New project

Well , no double down . Got to the track friday and the rain started . Saturday we ran sportman challenge . I double teched in footbrake and super pro ( electronic ) . I told myself i wouldnt double again and i should have taken my own advise. I went .006 in FB and .014 in E first round . Game on !

2nd time trial in E .000 ! It came down from the wheelie and broke a cord in the driverside front tire . Like a moron i drove it out , but i 3 7.09 passes under my belt . Unhooked my Ford and hauled to the house . Jacked up the other truck and grabbed the front tires . Totally new set up now , so i had no idea what it was going to do . New tires changed the set up . -.015 in FB and .-022 in E with the bye so i was still in E . Took 6 psi out of the fronts and 1/2 # out od the rears . Still red . Totally out .

Sunday morning fresh start plus king of the track race after all was finished . Just ran FB . Set the air back up to starting point and was .-027 . Im was hitting my spot . Move 2 step down 200 rpm . .033 decent . Second round i got hammered on the tree . .015 to my .078 i was dead late .

Made tire adjust ments and went back up on tire pressure 1 # and 100 on 2 step for king of the track . .017 . Broke out by .004 first round , but cross talk was on so we reran . Truck was way hot and i went red .-018.

season is over til div 4 in ennis

Re: New project

Guys , i haven't updated for a while so i figured i better . I ended up having alot of trouble . Carb issues mainly due to fantastic air . We average around 2000-2800 DA here off the water in Baytown . We started up their with like -900 DA . I had huge lean spots on transision and the truck just wouldnt leave . I mean not move . I was also footbraking the truck . This was different for me because my home track has basically a box and no box classes . The no box class allows me to leave on a 2 step and a transbrake . Anyway , the reaction times were like ,108-.160 for test and tune and i went out first round in the gamblers race before i got enough fuel in it to make it work . I just said **** it and went up 4 jets front and rear and set the idle screws were my eyes watered and went for it . First round of the real deal and i dialed a 7.03 . Staged the truck perfect and man did it leave . I was watching the yellows as i was going by and surprised to see the green . Other guy was dial 6.33 so i had a good head start . I watched him leave in the mirror and he just wasn't getting there . At 400' i was off the throttle coasting down through the traps when he came past me . I was .024 r/t he was .118 . I broke out with a 6.88 ! If i would have know this before i would have just drivin it out for the time slip . 1.501 60' and was on the best pass ever on motor . Anyway i was out and it was beer time .

Yesterday i forced a very good friend and long time buddy of mine to take my truck to sealy and run 7.0 index . Rodger has a truck ( the white S-10 i built ) and runs 7.90's . This was a new experience for him and a big move up . He did ok , but got rattled a bit due to the pro tree and transbrake .

Starting tuesday the motor will be coming out as all the new parts are in . Plans are to hone the block , new pistons and rings , rod and main bearings all new seals , a cam swap ( same specs except 108 CL ) , 220 AFR heads , single plain intake with fogger and 250 jets , different powerglide with a pro brake , and a "mini tub" to the frame rails for the bed sides . If i can pull it off im gonna try and replace the rust spots in the rockers and repaint the entire truck . We will see if i have time .

Plans for next year include a full season of NHRA bracket racing along with as much as i can stand IHRA bracket racing . Hopefully the changes that i make will get the truck into the 10.80's so i can run some Super Street (10.90) divisional stuff also .

Re: New project

Thanks , Racing is done for the year ans we have about 65 days til the start of the new season . I just decided not to break up the old motor . It has been good to me and im going to keep it together .

I am working on a complete new motor based on a 880 4 bolt vortec block . I have the JE pistons , 6" Carrillo rods and Lunati crank @ 3.75 . Budget is tight so 385" it is . Probably end up solid roller @ 250/260 something and mid 6's on the lift . Single plane with 300 fogger and AFR 220's on it . New glide with pro brake and my current ATI 5200 converter . Dan Divinchi here in Houston is building the carb for it .

Also i bought a 83' El camino that the 2 bolt 355 will go in . with my old powerglide . I will attempt to run 2 classes next year and the elco will be for electronics class and i will leap into the delay box world slowly , like 7.90's

Pics of all this will be coming and probably a new thread about the elco .

hotrod 80 12-21-2013 06:20 PM

Re: New project

Went solid roller . With the Vortec block you can use a LT1 /vortec style blank and use the retainer plate to hold the cam thrust instead of a button . Comp built me a custom grind 256/266 @.050 .701/.707 with 1.6's on 108 . Heads are AFR 220 with the comp port job and the are 328 at .600 and 329 at .650 and .329 at .700 so really no need to use 1.6's . Pump gas 10.75 to 1 small block . Having Dan Divinci build me a carb for this motor .

We are just going to dyno the motor then bolt it in the truck and see what happens . Should be interesting . The goal is to be making passes by mid January . First race of the season NHRA is Febuary 17/18

Re: New project

One argument for the 1.6's is the if it goes all the way to .7,, that means the more time it will be at .6 and in the big flow.:) The cnc port is nice. My AFR RR220's went to 295 and hung there. Just wouldn't peek over the 300cfm line at all. But they were about 5-7 cfm over advertised,, Like always AFR is well worth the $

Who's shaft rocker system you using? AFR claims the 220's will 'accept' stock stud rockers and that's true. But if you really want the valve train right,, it requires a .45 / .1 offset. I run Crowers 1.55 shaft system on the 220's in the truck and the valve train is rock solid stable. I was surprised the stainless steel rockers wern't heavier and more of a problem with RPM's but it will go 8000 without missing a beat.

The springs are set up to go 1.6 and the machinist has told me thats were he wants it . I will be running his logo on the rear fenders next year also. He has told me bring my 1.5 stuff in and he would sale it for me . Crower is good stuff . I want shaft mounted stuff for sure . Trying to keep this a somewhat tame "bracket" motor . At this point im really nervous about all the changes . Really dont want to start from scratch next year , but going to have to to some extent .

Re: New project

Cam ended up being a custom comp cam with the specs above . I got all the parts to the machinist . Block has been line bored, clearenced and cylinders bored . Rotator should be at the balancer within the week . Looking at 2 weeks ( 14 days ) before the motor is done . Carb is finished . Dan Divinchi custom built a Holley 750 HP i had . 910 CFM was the flow numbers based on head flow , cam size , fuel specific gravity blah , blah , blah Should be a nice piece . Looks like we are going to chassis dyno the combo if it all comes together before the first race (30 days away) . If not i will run on the beat up motor the first race to allow a full 30 days before the next race or wait til summer break . Ill post some pics of everything coming up .
