Re: Camshafts..

Ok capt fab.

I'll give it a shot. Everybody cross your fingers in hopes the gm dealer has a dipstick tube in stock ;)

Whats one cost roughly from GM (I read that china chrome ones suck etc) And do I have to buy dipstick AND tube or what?

Thanks

Ok. Just got timing chain cover on etc.

Cam dot is @ 6 o clock

Crank dot is at 12 o clock

This is right, isnt it? (Too late the cover is on and rtv'd and new felrpo gasket on lol

as prostreetc10 said, that's correct, just remember when you go to set the valves that that is firing position for # 6

Re: Camshafts..

cant I turn it over X amount to get #1 firing?

prostreetC-10 02-18-2012 11:35 AM

Re: Camshafts..

It doesn't matter when adjusting the valves. There is a sequence you can use so you only have to turn the motor over a bare minimum. For me, I like to start on #1 and go 3, 5, 7, then hit the pass side. That's Just so I don't forget. The only problem with that is you wipe off the maximum cam lube before firing due to turning over excessive amounts of time. Not a problem with roller cams though! ;o)

Re: Camshafts..

Ok anyone wanna give me your # so I can call for stupid ?'s LOL

I just set the valves im pretty sure I was on the compression stroke when I started but im not sure? I did so many valves then turned it over 360* (crank) then adj some more valves

Was this right? What if I wasnt on copreesion stroke (timing covers on but the intake is off

HELP

Re: Camshafts..

That's the way most repair manuals tell you to do it with a stock camshaft. Performance camshafts due to their duration and lift need to be done at each cylinder.

that was the purpose of my giving you the heads up about the marks on the gears. if you started setting your valves with the 12 o'clock-6 o'clock gear orientation, you would need to know that that was compression on #6. one complete revolution (360°) would put you on compression for #1.

Gary is, of course, right about using a different method than factory, but if you were to start in the wrong place (that is #6 when you thought you were on #1), not knowing exactly what you're doing, the adjustment would be wrong. it also helps when putting the distributor back in

there are several methods. I've marked my damper at 90° intervals corresponding to TDC for each pair of cylinders, if I know where I'm starting, I know which is firing next on the damper

That's how I do mine. Then follow the firing order.

Ok

Im going to wait till its in the truck to set the valves (re set) I'll find the compression stroke #1 with my finger over the hole and line the balaner up. The timing cover is on now so i dont wanna take it off :(

Waiting to put intake/dizzy on I need some thread sealer for the vortec intake bolts they go into the lifter valley

Wonder if John is going to get this thing to run this weekend? I remember the butterflies in my tummy the first time I tried to light off something I went this deep into!!!

Re: Camshafts..

Dang lol

longhorns gone huh

lol @ him and ticker

gonna put the rear main in this AM and button up the intake and im not sure if I wanna install with the trans in truck or pull the trans (dont think i'll be able to line it all up in truk)

GASoline71 02-19-2012 03:33 PM

Re: Camshafts..

You probably really didn't need to do the rear main. Unless you confirmed that it was leaking. SBC's leak... from the front and rear. When they stop leaking oil... it means they're out. :)

Gary

oldblue1968chevy 02-19-2012 05:17 PM

Re: Camshafts..

Well I wanted to because its easier now than in the truck

Whats easier? pulling trans and lining everything up in the floor or trying to line everything up in truck? im ready to drop in but just not sure what i wanna try it was hard to get it out with trans in truck but i dont wanna leak all my gear oil out if i pull trans

maybe undo driveshaft u joint at trans?

Re: Camshafts..

the insstructinos with the seal said to put in cocked ways with a dab of rtv on the outside bearing cap thats wat I did

I put some teflon tape on the drain plug threads and straiged oil pan

the dipstick..well i think i'll have to get a new one the dealer never caalled me back about it, he said they didnt have one in stock and to get a chrome one from orielly or somwere...
