Curious question for you, with the gas ported pistons and low tension rings would it help your engine by running a vacuum pump?

I have no idea . I was told the tension on the rings at rest would be enough to keep it (Compression)from bypassing the rings to the crankcase and that as the cylinder pressure increased the ring tension got higher . My intension was not max effort for sure . At this point I have no crack case evacuation , meaning I just run breathers with tennis bands around them. I really don't have room for a vacuum pump system without taking the inner fenders out . My machinist is a guy I went to high school with and is still in my home town. He went with me to my last race and really knows what im doing . I let him know that the main goal was to keep it simple . Load it , race it and put it up . I already work on it enough .

What about a pan-evac like this moroso kit on Summit? Cheap and time-tested.

I just dropped one in, haven't tested yet.

regan wilson 04-08-2015 04:22 PM

Re: New project

The vacuum pump might not be worth a bunch of power but it could still be beneficial to keep ring seal and longevity. On a big motor they can be worth 30hp on a small block I dont know. If you were to use a Moroso Pan -evac type deal. Put the exhaust fitting behind the muffler. Otherwise it will deposit oil in the mufflers.

On the vacuum pump a 3 vane Moroso would be fine. You will need a check valve so you can set it. That can be done on a scale ( ie x inches at x rpm) or just do a permanent in cab gauge.

Re: New project

Well I sucked this weekend and bad . I don't have excuses , but I got a story so here goes.

I am running IHRA sss at a new track to the east of me at a track called Ben Bruce memorial airpark in Evadale , Texas . Last year I ran IHRA at Lonestar motorsports park in sealy which was west toward San Antonio . So im headed east in my Old Ford (7.3 powerstroke) and about 45 minutes in we are dead stop on I-10 . I-10 is the main road from California to Florida in the south . 30 minutes of idling and the old Ford (186,000 ) starts dropping cylinders . I floor it in neutral andf get it clean enough to run on 7 .1.5 hours dead stop I finally get to the turn off . My Machinist had shown up and wanted to ride with me . we both had to pee. Mind you First round of qualifying was 4:00 pm its 4:30 . I pull into a Dairy queen in town and I have a cut trailer tire . Driver side front . It is cut bad . I pull out the small gen and air compressor and it aint happening . Guessing it was prom night cause there was a limo in the parkinglot . I ask " Are you from around here " ? he say "yep" ......"Me " I need a tire shop ASAP . He says go left here ,left their , right here and maybe their open . Ok , thanks ....Im about to leave and this guy says "hey , Your best bet is Walmart " Im heading North and forget to drop the num ber in the trailer brakes and burn a flat spot in the now flat tire . I get to the auto shop (Walmart) ..... Policy says they cant work on trailers ! I blocking all the stalls . I drive the trailer up on a 4x4 block of wood and pull the bad tire with a 4 way which I bent. I roll the tire from my "78 C-20 3/4 ton" in as a carry in flat repair . It is cut wide open and now has a flat spot cause Im a dumbass . While they are playing games about tires . I put on the spare . $153 later I got a new tire for my 78" 3/4 ton and im on my way again . I have already missed first time trial . I pull in and try to buy 7.0 index and no box tech cards . Nope either or . one or the other . 1 time trial right lane .105 red . WTF . Throw the kitchen sink at it to be green 1st round . 10 psi out of the fronts , 700 out of 2 step . 1/2 # out of rears and .020 into the long throw . drew the left lane .021 red ........WOW ...... Take another 5 psi out of the front and bought back in . Got the left lane and adjusted accordingly . Im holding.03
just cause . I leave im .049 and the shift box wasn't on . I shove it in second and start to spray . 7.05 on a 6.93 dial . Opponent .001 and backed into me like a pro . > I go to lift and the motor is still revved . I block the block valve and it calms down . Nitrous solenoid diagram is bad . . I forgot about the fuel regulator I had to put a diaphragm into due to a lean condition . I'll do a leak down , but I am offially on my longest losing streak ever . I just cant win for loosing .

What the heck is with all this bad luck of recent!!! Seems everyone is having a tough season!!

Hotrod you know there is times we go to the final round just because the stars all aligned and we were nothing but LUCKY,,, Didn't deserve it,, just everyone else was having a worse day than us! There is 'paybacks' and sometimes you have to be on the http://www.small-block-chevy.com/ima...es/nutkick.gif side of things just to keep the universe in order.

Well Belle Rose rained out and is rescheduled . So i thought i would photo update the current mods . I needed a engine containment device and Vincent (vin 63) hooked me up . Custom made and heat resistant .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...psm2unsrhi.jpg
I also got this little baby . 180 straight cut rossler promod 2 . Plans are to buy a case and when the new motor goes together im sending the converter back to ATI for a freshen up and building/freshing the trans and putting the new motor in all at one time .

Well the transmission is fixed and the 1.80 gearset installed . I am waiting to swap it back as my transmission guy told me it had fines in it like the converter was beginning to have issues . I am planning to pull the motor and trans as a combo , break them apart and send the converter back to ATI for a freshen / inspection . I may also consider just buying a new ATI or FTI . If you follow any of my other threads i bought the white 79' back and kinda parted it out and sold the body ( i cant keep 3 of them ) . I pulled that motor and did a tear down ispection . This yeilded a hurt camshaft for #3 cylinder

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...pshjjhbaqj.jpg
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...pstn3tasgm.jpg
I also called the machinist that built the motor and had a long talk . Im having comp regrind the cam just as he spec'ed it @ 234/245 @.050 .608/.614 with 1.6 rockers on 108 . I dropped off the heads and had the repair job from the previous owners machinest inspected / tested and they are good . Previous owner took the heads off the motor without draining the block and left water in the cylinders . I honed the cyclinders and reassembled the short block with fresh parts . I will final assemble it when the cam arrives and this motor will be going into the truck til December when the high compression motor goes in . 220 comp post AFR heads and a single plane intake with my carb on it .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...psnhgtty5m.jpg
The current motor will go into the blue 78' with th350 and 3000 stall , the 9 inch is already in it . I race again on the 11th NHRA and the 18th IHRA ( or Belle Rose super street havent decided yet ) then NHRA points again on the 25th

Re: New project

I ended up going out 3rd round last weekend . Bad part is i was on . Lights were steller . I was .002 to his .056 3rd round and the truck had run 6.86 all day long . Right after the sun set the track got better bite and it 60 footed . I ended up taking .107 , trusting the truck . Should have backed up , but lost 2 races last time that way .

Anyway i just ordered a new converter to match the motor im putting back together and i'll have this converter cut open and checked out for the 396 over the winter .

Re: New project

Leak down was good , trans fluid looked good , inside the filter looks good . Tires are junk with no depth holes . I don't know how I missed that . Swapped tires already and just ordered a set of the pro bracket radials to try out . Last fuel I bought was 90% so I was a touch lean . I put 3 jet sizes into it and cut it back to 85% should be good to go for the National dragster challenge , which I am the defending champ .

Too late to edit it , but I won . Yes it is not the billet blank and no it is not fixable . I just ordered another one from comp to replace it . Gonna be hot this weekend like 101 and 100% humidity . I have a fresh motor trans and converter waiting , but not changing anything til we get a break .

Re: New project

Got to 10 cars Saturday night and was just late I was .080 and he was .051 I was dead on 1 and he almost gave it back . Mov was .007 .

Last batch of fuel I got was 93% and it caused me to be lean . I cut 2 jugs with 1 quart of 87 pump gas and ended up with 76% . I blended the 4 jugs half and half and ended up with 2 jugs of 87 , 1 jug of 86 and 1 jug of 85% . I also went up 1 jet size to 99 square . This helped the cooling for sure .

hotrod 80 08-11-2015 06:55 PM

Re: New project

Been testing on the new Pro bracket radial , but cant really give a good report as I think the sprag is broken in my converter . It will just drill it and 1.51/1.52 and im .008 or im .080 and 1.57 with what feels like it is falling on its face at the shift and 10 numbers slow . I can tell when it does it and I've been spraying it to make up for it , but it is tough to dial in like that . I went out first round Saturday , bought back in and lost third round with a 7.04 on a 6.93 dial not spraying . Sunday I went out 4th round with a slow light from the converter , but broke out cause I was on the spray hard trying to make back up . Im about to go out and start pulling the motor and trans and get it ready for this weekend .

Re: New project

Had a busy week , 48 hour work week and working until late to get this thing together . I had a 388 out of the white 79' I sold and bought back . I put the 388 with my "good" glide that I broke the planet in at divisionals . I had a 1.80 straight cut put in it and freshened up . I bought a BTE converter that is 4900 rpm stall . I stuck it all together and threw it in the truck . I got it fired up about 8:30 Friday night and Saturday by 1 pm was on the road untested headed to Lufkin for "Battle of the pines" Ironman race . Pulled it out of the trailer and took it to the shutdown area to warm the gear and found it was rich . Took the 99 square jets out and put 92s in the front with a 4.5 power valve and 95 in the rear . The air to fuel was a lot better . Small leak at the china wall in front and I smeared it with blue RTV and it sealed . Won first round with a .002 light and had the bye second round won third with a good light . Got up for 4th and made 3 mistakes ; not enough burnout , bumped in to deep and anticipated the light to be .-042 red . Best pass was 6.97 worst was 7.00 with the deep bump. Pretty consistant for sure , but slower then my old motor . Next weekend is the season final race . I slide to 11 in points due to the 2 race drop . Need a good weekend coming up for sure . I will be swapping back to the pro bracket radial to start Saturday out also .

Had a decent weekend for the season 11th for the season out of 93 . Local NHRA season is over and the year . I got 1 more IHRA race next weekend , then both of the bracket finals . Plans are to run IHRA in the yellow truck and run NHRA with the blue truck in no E sportsman . We will see . Been a long season and I have had a lot of parts issues for sure .

Re: New project

IHRA bracket finals got to 23 cars Fridays gambler , first round runner up for the ironman with a ,043 pack and got to 9 sunday in the gamblers race . 2 more 7.0 index deals and I am ready for a break .

hotrod 80 10-15-2015 10:46 AM

Re: New project

Been working on this thing . I ran IHRA bracket finals in this truck and the NHRA in the blue truck at NHRA . Tires are done so I swapped to the 28's off the blue truck and 24" fronts as all I have left 2 index races . Pro bracket radials don't agree with the truck very well . My rear springs are 200# and need to be 130-150# . Calvert cant make me a set , so bias plys it is . Motor seems to be breaking in nicely . ET has dropped to mid 6.80's . Been looking at Champion wheels and will be funding them through a garage cleanout . Fresh front and rear tires for 2016 .

I also still have the rotator from the 396 and I bought a brand new set of pistons for that set up . The block work should be done by Christmas . Im still unsure about camshaft choice . Hoping to start the season faster at like 6.40's that would put me in the fastest 5 cars in my field .

hotrod 80 01-07-2016 12:07 PM

Re: New project

Well update time . The rotator I hurt in March 2014 is almost done . Block clearenced , bore and hone done , p to v was .080 on the intake and .100 on the exhaust . I had 1.65 Pontiac rockers , so I ended up swapping to crane gold 1.5s . Really wanted a shaft setup , but funds wont allow it right now . The rocker arm swap will give me the extra room I need p to v . Cam is 256/266@.050 and .660/.630 lift . Should work good for what I am doing . 220 AFR heads and my fogger intake . I am also running pump E85 for 2016 . Changing to fenderwell headers to lose some weight and free up some power.
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...pshkjrf1f3.jpg

Sent the converter off to Lenny @ UCC for a freshen up . Also will be having the trans pulled apart and checked out . I also broke down and bought a pump station and got a contract on a mother bottle .
