Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
What intercooler /radiator /fan do you plan on using?
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Good question! I have no clue! Opinions? haha I am planning on getting a new 4 core bb radiator and running 2 electric fans.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I'm not real sure in the intercooler but I think i'm gonna use one from a powerstroke, like this I guess: http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-3-powerstr...add61f&vxp=mtr
Ryan will know what fits. A chevy 4 core should be good but I'd try to squeeze a mechanical fan in there first and use electric fans as a last resort. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I think he said that the dodge mechanical fan would not fit on this because it was out of a freightliner, and their fans wont fit into a regular truck.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
How far apart are those bolts on the front pulley, will a chevy fan fit on it?
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
dont know, have not really looked into it lol
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
you can always get a dodge fan bearing off ebay or something so you can run the dodge fan. I have one from a 92-93 intercooled dodge as they were a little bit shorter, and gave more room for the fan. they are hard to find though usually.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I was told that I would have to get all the dodge brackets for that to work because it moves the belt closer to the motor so all the brackets would have to change.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I picked up some steel monday that was scrap to use to box the frame. Itsf6 pieces of 10" by 5 ft 1/4 in steel. Should be strong enough.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...46708FE752.jpg Last night with the help of a couple buddies and my dad we were able to get the cab off of the frame so that i can box the frame easier. Just gotta move some stuff around in the shop and push the frame back in. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...42434C170D.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Started boxing the frame tonight. First peices are going slow trying to get the hang of it.

As for an update I should have some pictures some time this week with all of the frame boxing pieces all in place. I replaced the front cross member because all the cummins conversions I have seen on these you have to cut the cross member, so I just cut it out and put a new one up toward the front of the frame. Ill be using 4x4x1/4 inch tubing for the cross member for the motor so I dont see a problem with having the front cross member mounted in the very front of the frame. |

Nice progress and keep it up man! |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Things have been busy with school so things have not been going as fast as I was hoping but I did get some shop time today.
Got the sleeves for the steering box and got them welded to the frame. Still need to drill out the boxing plate to fit around the sleeves. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...C0B76B3FEF.jpg Also made a new cross member for the front because the stock one has to be cut up to fit the 12v in so I decided to make a new cross member so that I can try to mount the motor lower in the frame some. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...C0C128F1A4.jpg Got more plates tacked in the frame. Getting close! http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...C0CA811AED.jpg That is all for this update. Hoping to get the frame done the next time I get to work on the truck. Then it will be time to put the cab back on and start making the mounts for the motor. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Looks great man! Are you making your engine cross member after you box in that area, and are you going to sleeve the shock bolts like that too?

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
So today I got a few more boxed pieces made for the frame. Also welded all the nuts to the frame for my front body/spring mounts. Not going to final weld the stuff in till I get my bushings from Diy4x for the front shackles.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...23539223D3.jpg Shop is starting to get messy again. Probably need to clean up soon. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...234B799657.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
It isn't messy enough yet. You need at least one more truck strung all over in there. Hehe! Keep up the good work!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I wish I had that much space to work with.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
This weekend I picked up some new bucket seats with a matching center console. They are out of a newer gm truck. Not exactly sure on the year but they seem to fit great in my truck. Just gotta get them mounted and they should be good to go. They sit a little high, but I am 6'4" and it seems to be fine for me.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...A678DCBE84.jpg Might get the frame done this weekend if I have the parts I need by then. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Nice score on the seats! Hey, at least you can start your engine.

You've had it for what? like 7-8 weeks and you already broke it? Dang kids!
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I've had it less than that lol. Last time I started it was like 3 weeks ago. We might have to build another motor sooner than I thought! Lol!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well today I got my diy4x bushings for the front shackles. Looks like they will do just what I want and will really beef up the front some.
Outside pic http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...0D64E669F9.jpg Inside http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...0D6CE7DBCE.jpg Boxing plate is just sat in there for mocking. I had to push the plate that goes around this bushing in a 1/4 of an inch to be able to weld the dom tube to it. So there will be a little lip right there instead of it being flush. Hoping to get those welded up some time this week and get the frame done. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I finally got these welded into the frame. Looks like they are going to beef this up a lot.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Is that a caterpillar on your frame?
 Just joking man! It's looking great. Now you need thicker shackle bars because they look puney. Haha |

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I bet you're glad to get that over with! Are you going to spray some paint on it before you put the cab back on?
Also how many holes are in the low portion of the frame for draining? And I'm really interested in how rigid that made it, have you jacked one tire off the ground yet? Man i'm just full of questions aren't I? :) |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

Whatever holes are factory in the bottom of the frame are the number of holes for draining haha. Ill flex it out with the tractor once I get the engine cross member welded into the frame for ya! |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Alright sweet!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Oh yeah, I am kinda glad its over so that I can move on to mounting the motor. But I really enjoy working with metal and welding so it was actually kinda fun. At first it seemed like a pain in the butt, but after getting the first couple pieces cut and fitted I got the hang of it and all the other pieces basically just fell into place. This thing is going to weight a lot by the time im done. I think i added close to 200 - 250 lbs just from those pieces in the frame. And I still have to build a cross member for motor trans mission and trasfercase (Thinking about supporting the transfercase as it hangs behind the transmission a lot) and build a bumper out of some 1/4 steel (stupid other drivers and deer)

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got the cab back on tonight.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...38C0697D7B.jpg That is my dad in the pic, he has been helping me with all of this. You can see my A frame in the pic that I extended 3 feet to make it be able to pick the cab up. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...38BA9C0904.jpg Another view. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I did decided to lower the motor into the frame to try to get an idea of what kind of room I have.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...541AAF5391.jpg Looks like I will have quite a bit of room to work with. I plan on running two electric fans so I should have some room to play with. |
