Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Wow! All of your hard work has paid off. You saved one that surly was left for dead. The 72 that I sold was Hawaiian Blue and had a blue interior. It was a CST with air, tach, 4 spd. One of the board members bought it. He started a build thread back 3/09/11 and never posted any progress since then. Here is the link http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=451927 Just wondering what happen to it. Not trying to high jack your thread.

Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Wow, That looks great, good to finally have some color on it. Great work as always..
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Well done. You might have passed me by now.
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Big Block, Thanks! It looks like the one you sold was pretty similar to mine but in better shape. Maybe the guy you sold it do got discouraged with the build thread because he only had on belated post by another member. It's a shame because his first few posts were informative and full of pictures. It was definitely the type of thread I like to subscribe to. Hopefully he is making good progress.
PD1292, Thanks for the encouragement! hgs_notes, Thanks! Don't worry I am sure it won't be long before you re take the lead. |

Aww man! You beat me to color...that looks sharp!
Oh well - I have a few more things to finish up and I am hoping to spray color this summer. You did very well and saving this truck was quite a feat. Nice work! Added a bit of a short picture timeline - hard to believe how much has been done to this truck to get it this far. Congrats. |
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Its been a long road. Looks like you beat me to paint! Good choice of color.
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
lks dcvn, Thanks for setting up the timeline! Well I think you will have a great chance to surpass me again. My wife and I decided to go on the Dave Ramsey debt free plan. That means NO $$ on trucks until we are debt free. Fortunately I think I have enough work that I can do on the blazer to keep me busy without spending money until the end of the year; after that it will sit. Fortunately this is a good stopping point. I am looking forward to seeing your blazer get some fresh paint!
SOON2BLAZE, Thanks! It was definitely a longer road than I was expecting. Looking forward to see your blazer in paint as well! |
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
I hope it works out for you and then you have so much money you don't know what to do with it. Looks like I'll be able to catch up again... ;)

Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Thanks hgs_notes! I saw that you shot a little paint on your blazer. It is going to be nice in that color.

Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
After about a month long hiatus from the blazer I started the cutting and buffing process. I started small with just the drivers side door and worked slowly. Of course it is hard to tell from the pictures but here is what I started with. As in all paint jobs it looks good but is not perfect.
http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb871b8b6.jpg So I used 2,000 grit paper and the longest board I could find and started wet sanding out the orange peel, and any runs that may have been in the clear coat. It wasn't necessary but to ensure that I didn't sand on the body lines I laid masking tape to prevent burn outs. http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps46109520.jpg Than the buffing process began. We used an electric buffer with the RPM setting at 1400. We did two different cuts with the buffer and a final finishing cut by hand. This is what it looked like after the electric buffer. http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps8411257b.jpg Once the we did the final hand buff it was starting to look mirror smooth. If the rest of the truck comes out as nice as the door I will be very happy. http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps34df3ed9.jpg Thanks again to Muleman100 for all of the help. Once we get the whole thing buffed out and in the sun I will post more progress pictures. |
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
That is one nice looking Blazer. Lots of hard work but worth it. Congrats.

Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Smoooooth.
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Not sure if I'm more jealous of the paint job or the barn in the reflection. Dang nice paint!
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Ron 586, Thank you!
hgs_notes, It's getting that way! jjzepplin, Thanks! Unfortunately the barn is in about as rough of shape as this blazer was when I started on it. Instead of rust it has been decimated by termites. Since we no longer have animals we are thinking of salvaging the tin from the roof and tearing the rest down. |
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Wow thy is one slick door that's some awesome buffing my friend great job.

NewType72, Thank you! It is turning out better than I thought it would.
Ol Blue K20, Thanks! I will keep the updates coming. HuggerCST, Thank you! |
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Last weekend I made a little more progress on the blazer. The entire drivers side of the body is now smooth and polished.
Here is the sanded down quarter panel. http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps6bd3cb21.jpg After a little buffing. This was originally the rough side of the blazer! http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps462dc163.jpg A close up! http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/a...psaf09c415.jpg |

The paint looks great!
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
lks dcvn, Thanks! It's been a lot of work.
Wasted Income, Thanks! It's not perfect but its the best I have ever done so far. |
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Now on to the hood, fenders and tailgate.
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
I finally finished sanding and buffing the body. Washed all of the dust and compounding residue off and took a few pics of the paint in the sunshine.

Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Nice!!
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Wow, amazing work!! Had to go back to the beginning of your build, just to see how much time and work you put into the truck to get it to this point...well down, paint came out flawless,
Wish i could do that |

Looks outstanding. Once paint is done the rest ain't bad. I had my C-10 drivable within a month of the paint getting done. |
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
I bet the guys who built these things would be jealous of your work. Schweet!

Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
swamp rat, Thanks!
jaros44sr, Thanks! This will probably end up being the longest project I have done before. At least until the next one. hgs_notes, Ha! If I have the rest of the body panels finished by Christmas I would be happy. Now that the blazer is starting to look like something my wife is bugging me about how long it will be before she can ride in it. jjzeplin, Thanks! You definitely get a connection with a vehicle that you build that you would never get if you bought it, but I wouldn't mind getting one that is done someday. |
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Any progress on this one lately?
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
smbrouss70, Not really. Since my wife and I are getting out of debt progress is going to be very limited for the next year or so. I have taken small parts to work and sand blasted them and put them into primer. I am also going through bins of parts and sorting out what I have and what I need. Definitely tasks that need to be done but not worth noting on the thread.
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Looks great!
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Alright, you out of debtors prison yet so you can get back to work on this thing?
|
Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
Hey hgs_notes! I wish. It certainly feels like prison. We still have about a year to go. My wife and I have a lot of student loan debt to wipe out. Already have the cars and small debts knocked out. We want to get the house paid off as well but we are going to spend money on our hobbies while we work on that. I have done a few small and inexpensive tasks on the blazer since my last update but nothing worth mentioning (painted steering column, painted front fenders/tailgate, sand blast and primed tons of small parts/ bolts/nuts, etc..).

Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
hgs_notes, Thanks! I was working on a hood that had oil canned and finally decided that nothing would get it back right. I ended up buying a mint oem hood at a swap meet a month or so ago. Planning on sanding it down and painting it over the Christmas holidays. Might post some pics when I mock up the front end.

Re: Left for dead: 72 2wd blazer build
So I am nearing the finish line of my debt free plan. I am not sure if I am more excited about no more bills or the fact that I can start working on the Blazer again! Either way it was definitely worth the wait.
Since I am starting to save up money to get the project back on track I am trying to nail down a few details before buying parts. I have decided that I am going to go with a crate engine. Nothing fancy, just a GM replacement engine. Unless someone suggests a better vendor I have decided to get my engine from Jegs. They seem to have the best prices on GM factory replacement crate engines. A year or two ago when I went on their site they had a GM replacement engine from 1969-76. Now when I look up their engines it appears as though they are not offering that engine anymore. The closest thing that I can find is a factory 1973-85 replacement engine. Here is my question to anyone who is reading this thread that is familiar with GM crate engines. I want my engine to appear completely stock and I want to use all original components. Does anyone know if the GM 1973-85 Factory replacement engine will allow all of the original 1972 brackets to bolt up to it? I would hate to get this engine only to find out non of my original brackets work. The engine I am talking about is Jegs parts # 809-10067353 |
