I think you should do a step by step write up on the cluster for the fact section.

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
I have 2 clusters of parts I am not going to use, so if you need anything let me know. Just dont be in a hurry, anything mailed to you may take up to 2 weeks to arrive from my location to yours.
You would be welcome to anything I have in this regards tho !! |

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
More new parts/updates. I'd been looking for a cheap used bellhousing for mock up but those don't exist. Even checked with a local junkyard that checked in their database of ~8000 other junkyards and there were only two available nationwide, one at $200 and one at $240 plus shipping. I found that Tick Performance had new Tremec bellhousings for $199 shipped so I picked one up and it came today.
A guy called today wanting to buy the spindles, brakes, and steering parts that came with the frame so I'll order the No Limit rack kit if he buys my old parts. Gotta get new urethane body and engine mounts too so I can get the engine/trans mocked up and check for floor/firewall clearance. I'm undecided on sectioning the crossmember 1.5" for more control arm clearance at ride height. I wanted to set the engine as low as possible by notching the crossmember for the oil pan but... dropping the whole truck 1.5" might be more effective at lowering the center of gravity? I doubt I can do both since the rack is mounted on the front of the crossmember. I guess I'll need all the parts in front of me to know for sure. Have I rambled enough yet? :haha: http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...8D57197EE8.jpg http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...8D5281D688.jpg |

Check out our thread for pictures, we do not have the LSA pan on yet, but the measurements say it will fit without issues. We are redoing the frame mounts for the engine now, so hopefully over the Christmas holidays we can get this put back together with the new pan. |

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Picked up my trans mount last night and the motor mount kit is on its way. I'm going to make the motor mounts tie the upper frame rail and to the crossmember like the stock mounts. I may chop up the original mounts and use the top half to hide the new mounts so it looks like a factory part.

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Those motor mount pieces look nice. I haven't seen a kit like that where you can locate your own mounting tabs. I went with the Dirty Dingo mounts which are basically the same idea, only the tabs are already welded and the holes are slots for motor location adaptability.

Looks like clearance would be good with the LSA pan, but I think I'm going to use a 98-02 F-body pan since I can get a trap door baffle that bolts in. http://www.improvedracing.com/oil-pa...ffle-p-30.html Quote:
I thought they were neat too. Two bolts and the engine is out. I found another similar kit that I liked but it didn't have the option to move the tabs around, and the outer tube of the bushing welded to the tabs. The ones I ordered have only a bolt going through the tabs and the outer bushing tube is removable. This was the other similar kit- outer tube welds to engine plate and isn't removable. Both are compact and simple, I didn't really like the ones with a huge rubber/urethane mount with brackets and plates everywhere. The bigger ones probably dampen engine vibration better but I'm not old enough to worry about that yet. :haha: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attac...t-imag0614.jpg |
Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas!! :metal: The engine mounts came today and they were better than I expected them to be! Thick 1/4" plate for the plate and tabs and the edges were scalloped for weight reduction too. Nice grade 8 hardware and the steel sleeve for the bushings fit tight around the bolt. The holes in the tabs for the mounting bolt is a tight fit too- no play at all. Very nice kit!

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
I started cutting up the Chevrolet script valve cover to see if I could reshape the ends to match the flange of a LSx cylinder head. I cut the whole flange off and made a few relief cuts, then hamered one corner into a rounded shape. Once I had the shape like I wanted it I aligned the weld seams, welded the seams, then ground/sanded them smooth. Just a start to see if it would work; I want to shorten the whole cover atleast an inch and maybe make the ends more rounded at top corners like an original LS cover is.

Those valve covers look like they'll be a nice touch!

I really like the valve cover idea. Great work.

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
I really like the Valve Cover idea. Are the gen1 valve covers the same length as the LS ones?

you, my friend, do fantastic work

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Just a heads up....the '98 LS1's had the perimeter bolt pattern. don't know the casting numbers tho.

I've been working on restoring the cluster that I'll be using in Goldilocks and it's nearly finished. Just waiting on Jason to finish up the reprinted lens.

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Finished shaping the other side of the first end. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be to match the shape to the first corner! Also need to find another cover to have a pair.

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
nice work on the Valve cover I like the idea, think I might have to steal your idea and use it on mine if I ever get that far, that will make that 5.3 almost look like it was there from 65, a nice idea. as always great work.

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
I cleaned out a shed we have behind our shop so I could mock up the 5.3/T56 without having to tear it apart and move it out of the shop during the week to make room for customer cars. I moved the frame back there today and I'll get the cab moved up here from the house and set it on the frame to check for firewall and floor clearance.
http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...57EB847D70.jpg OCD kicked in again on the gauge cluster and I ended up polishing the bulb holders with 0000 steel wool and metal polish. http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...D3682A05FD.jpg I also wrapped the tach harness with cloth friction tape to match the cluster harness. Even tied one end so it looks factory. http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...58E0FD9DEB.jpg http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...F5CC0B679A.jpg And I'm working on a deal for a NOS in the box four speed shift knob. I haven't told the guy I'm buying it from that the numbers will be smoothed off and re-stamped with the six speed pattern... Just said that I'm building a truck and trying to keep the details correct. ;) Didn't want him to back out for fear of NOS parts getting mutilated. http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...5861335D60.jpg |

Off topic, but if you're wondering what the two "tricycles" in the shed are, they're drift trikes. The rear tires are sleeved with PVC tubing for decreased grip so they slide through corners. I build the green one from a 20" mountain bike last year. I'm going to add decals from a John Deere pedal tractor to complete the look.
