Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Need some advise on interior options we are looking into. more to the point seat design for a hybrid Bench with good side bolsters.

Making great progress! That is some impressive machine work, do you have a background as a machinist or just hobby?
|
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
I really enjoy reading your thread..
I saw a seat the other day when I was scouring the interweb and now can't find it. I think you would like it. I will keep looking. |

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
I want to change the name of this build thread, however the moderators administrators do not respond to countless e-mails.
Anyone have any idea how to get ahold of the folks that run this site? |
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Not sure if you are still looking for seat ideas...but I finally ran across a few for you.

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
update?
|
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Hi folks, sorry for the extreme absence. I some how got locked out of my own sign in but the Admins finally got it worked out.
We are deep into metal fabrication on the cab and bed and should be ready for paint by Easter. :metal: |
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Just post a picture of a ford that will get them!!!!!!!
|
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
It can be cheap, easy, or quick. Maximum is 2 out of 3. It would be a shame to get sloppy now.

Sorry we have not been updating the build. Work has been happening but life gets in the way and you all know how that goes.
So anyway let me get you nice folks current. As in most things "full one off" we end up re-doing stuff as designs change and what not. Nothing new to anyone that has built a clean sheet project. In this instance it was the exhaust system that we built back in late 2018. We (Or more accurately I ) had designed the system as pretty much a rigid system with Silicone isolators and nothing else. , Also the clamps that we sourced from flow master were big and bulky and I hated them so We cut all of them out and went to v-band style clamps. Looks like this now Attachment 1983341 Attachment 1983342 Attachment 1983343 |

So that was the Exhaust re-do and we are happy with the results. It is in the polishing phase now and I will post some pictures of that when Greg gets done with it.
That brings us to the next change. Our Stainless steel fuel tank we scratch built was just not very attractive. It has a few issues that would have been difficult to get squared away so we scrapped it and went with an Aluminum tank from No Limit. We ordered it blank so we would take care of welding on the mounts and punching all the holes in it. We also would need to plumb it. Attachment 1983359 Attachment 1983360 Attachment 1983361 |

Since we are in the plumbing stage we went ahead and built a mount for the transmission cooler and mounted and plumbed that too.

all the lines are now finished, and mounted. We made all of our own mounts and line separators as the aftermarket just did not have what we needed.

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Nice!!!! love this build. Not over the top, you might have said it in a earlier post but how much power does that BBC have?

Jim, thank you for showing enough interests in our build to ask a question. It seems the builds side of this forum is mostly a place for folks to blog about their travels and what they cooked for dinner. Motor was started and run in on a engine dyno and made 570 and change with a dual plenum intake and a 850 Holley. We will be using a open plenum air gap style intake and see if the Holley can keep up. Expect to make close to 550 at the wheels.:metal: |
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Beautiful work!

so awesome, are you using some sort of scoop on that trans cooler to grab the air or just relying on the fan to draw it through? im in the process of doing a trans cooler on mine, i guess a scoop and a fan wouldn't hurt. |

Little more work done, broke the X axis in the mill so have been working on that repair.

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
You gotta have $100 worth of aluminum chips on the floor. It always hurts to machine over 50 % of the material away to make a part.
What mill are you using? |

Built in the late 1970's on contract to the US Govt. It is a DEBER US 120 has twin spindles and a compound table to do tapers (You will see that feature when I get this beast back up and running. Attachment 1985624 Attachment 1985625 |

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
That is a really sweet machine! Not much you cant do on that one. I just picked up a Bridgeport from the 60's. Having fun learning to use it making a few parts for my truck.
Keep the posts coming, love following such a custom build. |

So I got the mill back up and was able to get to the part ready to be bored for the 7 instruments it will hold. I showed a picture of the cool part of my mill where I can swing the x/y axis and cut tapers. That allowed me to machine the sides at the 7 degrees from vertical.

Well the first phase is complete. Still need to add the bottom and get the steering column notch completed as well as final facing.
I'm pretty glad to have this off the mill for awhile. Attachment 1986283 Attachment 1986284 Attachment 1986285 Attachment 1986286 Attachment 1986287 |

Machining on the dash insert is complete. Now need to get it mounted.
It is just sitting close to its final location in these pictures. It will actually be about 5/16" higher in the dash when complete. You can see the lower panel We fabbed that will be the location of the new switch gear. Attachment 1995801 Attachment 1995802 Attachment 1995803 Attachment 1995804 |

What makes this so different (other then the increase in size and the ability to relocate or even delete some of the switches and knob) Is the angle our gauges will be laid back at. The original they were aimed at the drivers chest. Now they are in perfect alignment with the drivers point of view. It is subtle but very noticeable in application. :metal:

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Very nice. I really like the looks of those dash bezels/inserts.
|
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Will the lights from the gauges reflect up onto the windshield at night?

Not that anyone actually looks at this thread anymore but here is the new dash bezel and the custom one off under dash rolled pan that will hold the AC ducts as well as hide the underdash.

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
looks great, as usual. how much does that gauge panel weigh now?
Similar to your roll pan, I saw a guy at Lone Star Nationals who took a spare dash, cut it in half length-wise, flipped the top half upside down and welded it to the bottom of the dash.this made the shape of the dash be mirrored on top and bottom. It gave him a slot/shelf to store stuff in and he put his vents in that. |
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Less then 2 pounds.
30 gallon barrel of chips widdled away |
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
man that dash looks good, great work
