Got the new starter in wasn’t a very pleasant experience. I had to have the mounting block milled down . It was at almost .60 gab without any shims I think the machines milled down .10 ,it brought it to close but one shim brought it to exactly.30 .I also had to remove the Shaft shim to get the depth right too.
The isn’t charged in the picture so it’s slightly retracted when I power the solenoid it goes to proper depth on the Flexplate |

On the old 402 BB, I was able to run two 16” Syclone electric fans. (Which were 4” deep”) Now there is no room at all for them, and I had to find the slimmest 14” electric fans that still moved a lot of air. (Especially now with the added AC condenser, and power steering cooler added to the front, in addition to the already installed transmission cooler.) There is 1/8” clearance between the electric fans wire cover sleeve, and the belt tensioner on the passenger side of the engine. I just hope the fans move enough air to keep the engine cool. Don’t have too many more options. I can post a picture of just how close everything is in a bit. |

It was to hard to see the gap between the fan and the pulley system, so I placed a white sheet of paper underneath for better results. I didn’t use any of the thermostat stuff. I went with a Derale 16759 adjustable fan controller with manual over ride. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Today I finally fixed that broken button in the door handle. Happy I finally got that fixed! Also started applying boiled linseed oil to the body, much easier than clear spray paint. Then messed with the EVR because it keeps buzzing and making so much noise. I need to chase down that diode in the brown wire to make sure it’s good. But also, I have HEI distributor and need to make sure I wired it correctly. Pretty sure I did but that was 7 years ago. If I can’t figure that out I’ll have to upgrade my alternator. Why does something always break when you fix something else non related?

Got the plug wires swapped. Pre SBC, I'd have thought this would be a 20-45m job, but routing under the ram's horns and over the starter and scraping off road filth at the same time and pulling one of the heat shields, and.......

Have close to 4 hours wire wheeling the inside of the truck box and tailgate. All the visible rust is gone. Tonight I’ll rust mort it. Depending on dry time, I might be able to apply the bed coating.

Buttoned up the 72 . New brakes complete with new master and power vac from Pickmup trucks . New starter flexplate and transmission pan . Stupid thing in the pan I bought a kit that had everything from gasket filter and pan bolts . The pan bolts were loose going in I checked them and they were metric to bad as they were all stainless steel . So off to Ace for socket head bolts as the the original shoulder nuts wouldn’t work . Minor inconvenience.

I couldn’t find Rust Mort, so I’m trying a Rust oleum product. I brushed it on and let dry for several hours. Then I tried a test patch with the bed liner paint. I just put it on real light. I checked it this morning, it looked pretty good. Tonight after work, I will tape of the truck and spray the rest of the bed.

The print is so small on the back of the bottle that I had to take a picture and blow it up to read it. Sometimes I’m guilty of skimming the instructions, so I read these several times. It says to wipe off galvanized, and to rinse off porcelain or tile etc. There was no mention of washing the residue off bare steel. So I tried a test patch of painting right over it. Wonder if I should rinse the residue off first, let dry, then paint?

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
The whole time I've owned my 68, I thought the cigarette lighter was missing. I was watching a YouTube video this afternoon that made me realize the small black plug I found on the floor of the truck when I got it last year was actually the factory cig lighter delete plug. Good thing I kept that plug in case it was for the truck. Unfortunately it seems to have shrunk over time and now only fits loosely in the hole, so I'm gonna have to come up with a way to keep it in place. I'm thinking a dab of E6000 should do the trick.

My truck was an obvious fleet purchase -- all manual, one-color, no A/C, Stepside, no frills. The one item that stuck out on the Build Sheet [before I lost it] was DeLuxe Ashtray. People were serious about smoking back then. I've been thru a number of cigar lighters. They seem to burn out. I don't smoke, but the 12VDC outlet has come in handy a lot. :chevy: |
