Re: What did you do to your truck today?

All went somewhat well. The '69 is running and performs great. BUT the gear drive I chose is horrible. Not the good sounding whine some like, this has more of a growl-not pleasing at all. Removing it tomorrow night and going back to chain. Was very pleased with headers- been very happy with the Patriot brand lately. Hope you all had a good weekend. Lots of cool projects going on. Hope to get back to my '65 Burb next week-had to fix shop truck first.

If you chose a fixed idler gear drive like the sig erson, quiet one they sound a little better, pete jackson dual idler drives are notorious for some reason for he growling, even though I chose a quiet gear drive for my coupe, after several long road trips it sorta made me nuts......

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

First....this is a great site, I'm really glad I got on board and joined. I'm really amazed at the projects and talent here.
As for one of my trucks (one is '66 one is '72), I'm in 'wait' mode for a week until a shipment gets here with a brand new grill/insert ('72) as well as new cab bushings, some chrome trim pieces and then a few used pieces. All of this is coming in from good ol' Bill Peeters of 'Bills Truck Shop', Ontario....good guy.
My '66 is in hibernation in the garage....but I'm going to hopefully fire it up and pull it out long enough to do some rustchecking on it before tucking it back in again.
As for today, well......just gonna' go out for a drive and thats about it. Given the upcoming Christmas season 'hobby' time is going to be on the downslope side so putting in the new grill/etc and the other upgrades will have to wait until January.
Keep up the amazing work and projects guys!!
All Good
Coley

Agree with 65Custom, that looks great - nice little modification of stock parts.

I pulled a 305 v8 from my 55 chevy parts truck and made the decision to rebuild it as a hi perf engine w/700 r4, and put it in my 62. Now I need to figure out if I should sell the 305 v6 w/muncie 3 spd from my gmc. Any ideas on how much it's worth? runs good but leaks a little from the pan & tranny is good. Or if anyone local is interested pm me

Yeah I went the dual idler route and regretting it, but at least it's not a major teardown to fix. This is by far the worse one I have ever heard and I checked the spacing 4 times before sealing it all up. Got the old reliable double roller on order, will be here Tuesday. Thanks for the info tho, something I will remember.

Meshed the caprice and 64 core support together. Mounted the radiator, AC condenser and the oil and trans cooler. Hung the sheet metal on it to see what was rubbing and/or in a bind. So far so good.. Everything is tacked in place. Now, time to take it all apart and start boxing the frame back in and making it more permanent..

My LS swap started with that, then found a cracked head, figured the LS was the way to go.

Took a couple days vacation to make a long weekend to clean up the shop from the '69 rebuild and getting that "Burb back in to work on front suspension. Also going to mock up console/shifter idea and start to lay out some of the wiring. I have 3 harness to merge,- the EFI harness, the chassis harnes and the Phantom Key harness. Thank God they are all Painless Wiring parts. will post some pics later of some of the fab that is going on. Have a great weekend everyone!

It must be a personal preference thing, or perhaps they are louder now than those produced many years ago. I’ve been running a Pete Jackson noisy drive since 1991 and can’t imagine doing without it. I had a Summers Brothers drive before the Jackson, and although it was an engineering work of art it was too quiet for my tastes. For me the gear drive is just part of the fun factor which includes a Richmond 4 speed, suitcase mufflers and no insulation. There are so many mechanical sound effects to enjoy I eliminated the radio years ago.

You must not be alone in your annoyance with gear drives. Back in the 70’s-80’s it seemed like everyone had one. Where I live now I think I’ve heard maybe one or two others in the last 10 years so they have apparently fallen out of favor.

I actually took the cheap route, something I don't normally do and bought a no name gear drive. Fixed the problem already and still have the drive- had to relieve the main idler boss where it contacts the block-found my problem was misalignment under load. it's much better now and I kinda like it!:metal:

Finished the installation of a van tilt in my 64. I'm lazy and took the easy way out. I drilled a 3/8" hole in the center of dash where the column mounts, dropped in a 3/8" - 24 X 3/4" bolt backed it up with a 3/8" - 24 jamb nut which happens to be 1/4" thick, I then cut a piece of 1/4" rubber to install between the column and the dash. I pushed the column as close to the dash as I could and drilled a 3/8" locating hole in the top of my column to fit my centering bolt. Using the factory column mount holds plenty of pressure to keep the steering column tight in the truck.

I had a co-manager ask me the same thing back in the 1980's. Another enthusiast and I were discussing gear drives when the manager came in and condescendingly asked "is that the thing that makes it sound like your transmission is going out"? I responded - "only to the uneducated"!

Added 4 Way Flashers to my 64. Since I installed a 70's Van Tilt and the column had the provision for Emergency Flashers I wanted to make them work. I cut the flasher connector out of a 72 Nova in the wrecking yard. One side of the connector gets power from a constant HOT off the fuse block. The other lead runs to the "K" terminal (a brown wire) on the factory GM column connector. I read that you should use a 15 Amp fuse so I ran #14 wire. For my constant HOT I picked it off the Spot Light terminal of my fuse block and poped in a 15 Amp fuse. You don't have a "Spot Light" terminal on your fuse box? No problem, neither did I. In the wrecking yard locate a 60-66 truck fuse block, remove the Heater/B.U. Lamp fuse, take out the 1/4" head screw holding the fuse block in place and the screw in the Spot Light fuse location. Remove the fuses from the Brake LP & BU LP locations. From the back side of the fuse block - using a small flat blade screw driver release the tangs that hold the fuse clip in place and push out the front of the fuse block. The fuse clip I show in the middle of the first 2 pictures is the wrong clip it's for reference only. That clip is form the Panel LTS fuse and is the wrong one. You must use the clip from either the Brake LP or BU LPS fuse.

I bought the column off eBay so I'm not 100% sure what year it is but I think the seller said it was a from a 71 van. I was the only bidder at $99.00 plus $19 shipping. I don't think I did too bad on the price of the column.

And I thought I did good on my column. You got a great buy. I envy you right now. I got up this morning to work on my 64 and it was 28 deg. out side at 6:30 this morning. Needless to say I decided NOT to work on my truck. It's got be what about 70 deg. in your neck of the woods at this time?

The thing I like about the van columns is that they are short and this allows us to use a shaft between the column and the gear box like the 73-87 columns, sort of.. :)
It was 73 here yesterday but took all day to get there. It was 49 when I got up. Low humidity is great for summer but in the winter the temps are all over the place. It is not uncommon to have a 40 degree difference from day to night.
I am a weenie when it comes to the cold. Below 60 is too cold for me.:uhmk:
