Just to keep this thread slightly updated: We have kind of merged this project with my other one (Project Two - '74 Sierra Grande).

At least for the next couple of months I'm going to update the other thread with progress, but at some point one truck will become two again and I'll come back to updating this thread separately 😊

We decided to change the style of cage for this project a couple of months back, and moved from a full integrated cage to a more pro-touring rollbar/harness bar setup. This is our interpretation of a "Tiger Cage", which RideTech makes for the muscle cars. To give it the proper look we did this one out of 304 stainless :)

Doing this necessitated switching to another cab, as the last one is pretty torn apart for the full cage. As a result I will be posting the other cab up for sale shortly.

It's another one of those things that seems straight forward at the beginning, but after all the time he's put into this one I don't think he's too interested in doing more. Stainless is a hard material to work with. Maybe RideTech will get the idea and start making a kit for squares.

We've separated the builds back out and they are two trucks again hahaha

Cannonball has been in the shop getting body work done for the last month or so. We are working hard towards getting it done and on the road prior to the Brothers show in July.

Grabbed a couple of photos of it a few weeks ago when the front bodywork was just getting started. The fiberglass parts aren't easy to get squared up and are definitely not show car straight...but hey its a race truck :D

Hahahaha it had one last glorious dump of fluid all over me when we pulled it from the chassis.

Fun fact: That motor is now in the @projectc30crew dually, but the transmission remains on the floor of the shop.

Just read thru both threads. Oh my, whata ride! The funny thing is, I got sad as Cannonball 1 was getting cannibalized (see what I did there?) and then I really got into CB2 and started worrying that it was going to get partially absorbed as CB1 was going back together. Imagine my joy when CB2's sheetmetal all arrived back on its own chassis! Wow, Ive seen tear-jerker movies that have wrung less emotion from me. This would make a great short film, since it had plenty of plot twists and suspense. Both trucks are so cool in their own way. I'm sure it's hard to overlook the 'flaws' in CB2's patina when youre up-close. But man, it presents well in pictures. Consider some more quality time with some 800 or 1000 grit, little by little, each time you wash it, to see what emerges. Obviously the hood is quite thrashed so maybe Im being silly. But you kinda hooked me with the coupla wet-sanding photos. Now on CB1, that being a purpose-built truck and what a purpose! Beautiful parts and execution. Amazing ideas. The quest for 50/50 weight distribution by lightening the front. That kinda stuff makes me want to sell my house and follow suit. This is fun man. Thanks for making my favorite hobby engage me even more than it already had. One of greatest things about Squares is that they are cool at any level of assembly or fit n finish. Your two rigs exemplify this. Thanks for building them and letting us in on the process.

Sorry for the long post. Ive written love notes with less heartfelt enthusiasm. Hahaha

Its nice to have them back apart going in their own directions. You have no idea how many friends and family I've confused by describing the paths that these trucks have taken in the last year.

Have been super busy getting the body ready for paint. In fact we were up until 4am this morning finishing off the cab and doors. They head into the booth tomorrow morning for color, and the rest of the bodywork follows over the next few days.

One of the many side projects to get ready has been the door panels. I have a mint set of NOS 73-74 door panels that I was going to use on this project originally, but when we decided to do this truck in "best of the 70s" I switched to the full-size door panels ('77 era) for power windows. Well the woodgrain inserts I have were in poor shape so I decided to try the newer 3M DI-NOC vinyl woodgrains to see how close a match I could get.

Here is the '77 insert with (top to bottom) cherry teak wood, walnut wood, and marine teak wood:

And here's the door panels and dash insert all done in the marine teak. Its a really, really close match to the 73-74 woodgrain that GM used.

WOW! I have never seen that product before. Mind if I ask what the cost was and where you purchased it? I looked into having my original woodgrain panels hydrodipped and it was more than I wanted to spend ($350). Is the 3m stuff any cheaper than that?

I actually used them on the Sierra Grande project, where they are working out nicely. Don't think we'll have a stereo in this one yet, though it's got a sub box ready to go :)
