Re: Johns 66
It's looking really good John!
Side question: What do you plan on going with for exhaust on the truck? Single pipe,Duels,Loud, quiet or what? |

The truck already has dual exhaust on it now....Flowmasters...not sure what series or part number they are and they sound pretty good. I am having Bryan cut a 3in hole and put a backing plate for strength in the trailing arm cross member so I can re-route the exhaust....To me its a little to close together at the bumper.....Im gonna try and use the flowmaster I have now to save a little money |

took the ole beat up rear fender wells and decided to fix them instead of buying new one. There was quite a few dents ...guess the truck was used as a truck....lol
Anyways worked on my metal, filler and sanding skills....have a ways to go on all....but at least I can always sand it off. Still trying to figure out how to put enough filler on and get it smoother before sanding but as you can see...I still have lots to learn..lol I "Have Been Told" that this is probably one of the hardest part to do because of all the curves....I know it took me about 10 hrs to get them ready for primer and Im sure I missed a spot or two...But its a lot better than thinner metal Chinese parts...and a cost of about 300.00 including shipping. Gonna wait till I have more to prime plus am waiting my new gun...figure its better to learn a new gun with primer and base and clear. |
Re: Johns 66
Looks great John--Looks like a savings of $300 to me! Have they shipped your new guns yet?

I think Im gonna wait to epoxy prime until I get my truck back and just prime all of it at once. The hood should be blasted so when I get it back Im gonna sanding on it , put filler on it and get it ready for epoxy...after that work on the front clip, then the cab. Once all is in epoxy and high build then I will start blocking with 220 on up. |

Lil update....After looking at the grille I remembered that the backsides of these steel grilles usually rusted...So I took it all apart and painted the backside with POR 15....hopefully never to rust again.
I did receive my spray gun, hammer and dolly set plus some flexible sanding block from Eastwood. Will see how these work this weekend if it doesn't rain. |

Finishing Touches...Pick her up next week!!!!…...Then the real work begins....Sand and Prime..lol
Bought some aircraft grade paint stripper from KBS coatings gonna try and remove the old undercoating from the front and inner fenders. They said it would remove it...we shall see. Got my sand for the Pressure Washer sand blaster attachment like Kdad used so should be able to get it down to a good starting place with these 2 things. |
Re: Johns 66
Awesome! Congrats!!! Looks great..
|
Re: Johns 66
That's going to be sweet!
|
Re: Johns 66
That's great news John!
|
Re: Johns 66
sometimes, old undercoating becomes hard and brittle and can be chipped or scraped off.

If I can get then inside parts all the way down to metal Im gonna lay the POR15 to it, then undercoat.....hopefully that will alleviate any rust in the future. |
Re: Johns 66
Captains right. Might be best to scrape as much of it as possible first. I'm excited to see what you think of the blaster...

Im gonna try and scrape as much as I can off then use the stripper and blaster. |

Well since it was freezing butt cold today...Went and did a lil shopping.
So I bought me some stuff....Got a Hazard Switch...paid 20.00 didn't think that was too bad. A Chrome Chevrolet Script Emblem 20.00 Hard to Pass this up A new in the box from Brothers Truck Parts a rear sway bar for my truck for 75.00 Didn't figure that was bad at all since they are like 150.00 from Brothers Some fender rubber for 5.00 A lot better condition gear shift arm for 20.00 Also got a power steering pump with bracket and steering sector for 100.00 So not too bad of a day...I did pick up some other stuff that Im gonna sell....figured someone could use it. |
Re: Johns 66
Love the truck; especially the C60 grill. Look forward to the finished product.

Ill post some more pics later....and give an overview of what was done....Yes there is now no exhaust on my truck....:jdp: This is the last time you will see her on a trailer......unless she breaks down. |

I also learned a little information tonight...I guess a crook is gonna be a crook no matter what. I was always taught and under the impression that when looking at older vehicles that you should take a magnet with you to check the body....and I did that when I bought mine and of course thought I was getting a fairly rustfree truck.
When I picked up my truck tonight they straightened the tailgate since it had a slight bow in it....well when they did the outside cracked...Yes BONDO. So I decided to dig out to see how bad it was, but before I did I stuck a magnet to see if it would stick. Well guess what it stuck...so it cant be that thick...just a skim coat..WRONGO!!!!!! Evidentially the previous owner or whomever "Fixed Up" this rust free truck decided that just as I thought that anyone who wanted to buy it would bring a magnet....just like I did. So in their sneakiness and deceptiveness they took metal shavings/dust and added it to the bondo before they spread it,,,guess what happens then? Magnets stick to Bondo. Yes I dug down till I found true metal and noticed the metal fragments in the bondo. Previously I thought because I was using a wire wheel to get the bondo out and the wire wheel was breaking that I was just getting wheel spinters….well turns out that actually I was getting the metal shavings from the bondo. I cant stand a crook, liar and a thief...Now I really know why the PO wont answer my calls. Karma and the Good Lord will get whomever did this. Its hard to see the metal shavings/dust in the bondo but trust me its there. This one spot is at least 1/2 in thick. So looks like im gonna have to look for a tailgate now......That stinks!!!! |
Re: Johns 66
Wow...can't believe they put metal shavings in the bondo. That is underhanded for sure! You will get her fixed up, but it is disappointing I am sure.
|
Re: Johns 66
Dadgum, that sucks on the tailgate. Think on the positive though, the rest of it is looking great!
|
Re: Johns 66
magnets stick through bondo if the bondo is less then 1/4" thick.
Old wives tale using magnets to find body filler. The one caveat of that is to use those flexible magnetic labels/stickers that have the rubberized magnet on them. those will not stick to even a skim coat of body filler. |
Re: Johns 66
BONDO makes a filler that has "Metal" in it...

I remember when the guy told me to stick the magnet anywhere I like ...and of course I did and of course it stuck. My Cab corners, one rocker was completely made out of bondo...but no worries now that has all been replaced with true metal. Just a lil time and money as they say. No just gotta find a good tailgate is all. I guess the best way to buy these old trucks is to get a patined one like Christians where you can actually see everything and not hidden by bondo, silicone, license plates or undercoating...Live and Learn. But still love her dearly..LOL On a side note I did talk with someone this morning, Ricky Howard from Alex City, Al about doing my interior work. Seemed like a real nice young man.....His shop is called Built By Ricky...he does outstanding work...so Im gonna go meet with him next Monday and talk interior.....excited about that. |

Well went to the ole mail box a lil bit ago and look what was in the mailbox.
A glovebox lock from Winston(Pimpston) with the original key.....Best part was the price....Winston was nice enough to send it to me for nothing....See there ARE good people in the world. Thanks so much Winston, I really appreciate it a lot. |

Now on the patina thing... My truck has plenty of bondo, fiberglass, and galvanized sheet metal repairs hidden under crappy primer jobs and the rubber floor mat. That's what happens when she lived on a farm most her life and the PO just needed her to work rather than look nice  |

And So....It Begins....Im gonna post this today and probably be a few days before I post anything else.
I started today by adjusting the doors...the drivers side wouldn't stay shut and the passenger side wouldn't open....I adjusted the strike plates and got it pretty good without weather stripping on them. Had to take the latch mechanism out of the drivers side door because the spring that makes the striker stay put wasn't attached back ...which is why it wouldn't stay closed...luckily it was still there...so got he doors opening and closing correctly....but found another issue which I will describe later in future post....when I calm down.... I did try the sandblast water attachment but gotta get with Scott to see how he did his...mine worked great for about 2 ft on the frame then quit sucking sand So I started sanding and figured I would start on the biggest piece...the hood...pretty much everything else I had touch with a D/A. I tried to block sand with 80 grit but wasn't getting anywhere at all.....So I got the ole Dewalt 6 in orbital sander out and went to town. Evidentially I have a Patriotic Hood......Because under the white was red, then red oxide primer, then Blue some kind of orange looking color then and finally some black looking primer best I can tell. So me being me...I sanded and sanded and sanded some more. I got the two outside sections of the hood sanded down to metal...figured 6 layers of paint was too much to put epoxy, then high build then, color and clear...So Im gonna sand the hood down to metal. Of course I did find some bondo but was able to feel from the back side and it was more or less just dings that had been fixed...not 1/2 like the tailgate.. So with exception of the Doors that are NOS I am gonna sand her ALL the way down to metal...seems my truck is more Franken Truck than Franken Truck with parts from who knows what years...all I can be assured is the are original sheetmetal from 60-66. I know this is gonna take some time and effort but at least I know when I put color on her that it wont be 7 layers deep.....I am not looking forward to the underside of the hood..lol….may see if the ole oven cleaner trick will work. I will say this...besides interior she will not be going any other place to have anything else done to her |
Re: Johns 66
Dadgum man, that's a lot of sanding

Re: Johns 66
Well for some reason I'm not receiving my email notifications some or all of the time so I have not read any new posts from march 7 to today in this thread until today.???
Anyway John Sorry about the tailgate but glad you got the truck back and getting some work done on her. |
Re: Johns 66

The underside of the hood is currently sitting in oven cleaner and will let it sit for a day or so before I spray it off and see whats left. Also got some filler spread in a couple of low places I saw while sanding. I don't want to jinx myself but I have only found about 4 spots with bondo on the and 2 of them are in the back of the cab. Once I take everything apart then I will get the edges ...Just gotta maximize my space since the truck and hood take up so much space. So once the hood is cleaned and sanded down Ill put some epoxy primer on it and then put it back on the truck then take off the front clip. Im just going to put epoxy on most things then block it down, put fiiller where needed and try to get it pretty straight, the epoxy again and 2 coats of high build and then start the final blocking steps...190, 220 and 320...So hopefully I don't miss to many spots...lol |

Little Update....Still sanding and sanding and sanding. The underside of the hood has the second round of oven cleaner on it and should be free of paint this round. Will get it cleaned up and ready to epoxy. All has been sanded down to metal except the passenger side door jamb and passenger front fender and the window flanges for the windshield and back glass.
I will wait to start on the inside after everything is in epoxy. ALSO decided to get ole girl a Big Brother. Its a GMC AT4 double cab...has the 5.3L...almost went with the 6.2l but the 5.3 is just fine. I like the 2in factory lift and the more aggressive tires, didn't need a crewcab and this was 3k cheaper than the crew...feels like a truck. Did a muffler delete today and had the windows tinted ( Not in this pic) Will be getting a hard folding tonneau cover and vent visors as soon as they come in.....seems like they are on backorder now but no worries...I still have plenty of sanding to do...lol |
