Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I started getting some ideas for what I wanted to do for mounts. First I started out by cutting out some plates.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...A53DCFB363.jpg Here they are kind of bolted to the block. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...A5455C12B7.jpg After that I decided to make some templates to see what I could come up with for the block. Ive decided I am going to try to put the mounts at a 45 deg angle http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...A55128F11B.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...A55A0E09C5.jpg As you can see I used a piece of wood to act as the cross member. I am thinking about welding a kind of bracket to the cross member to meet up with the mount for some extra oil pan clearence but I am trying to mount the motor pretty low so I will have to get the block in the frame and see how things fit. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I hate to burst your progress bubble, but you're really going to want the engine in the truck to do the mounts.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I know. I was getting an idea for them. I figure if I kind of have a plan now then I can modify what I figured out for now. Plus I'm waiting on some parts to show up....

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Planning on these just leads to frustration. Haha

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I seem to work better with a plan. Now wheres my parts?

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
So I am still waiting on some parts before I can start mocking up the motor so I decided to mess with some stuff on the motor.
The first thing I wanted to get figured out was the throttle cable. Ive seen people use a dodge throttle cable, but this motor is set up a lot different than a dodge one so the throttle cable would not have worked. I had a extra chevy cable laying around so I decided to try to make that work. So I made this little bracket. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...EB0C37D497.jpg And here it is installed. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...EB12A61DAB.jpg The cable does not look straight, but it becomes straight once you start to pull on the cable. Just plugging away a the little things till I can finally start to mount the motor and transmission. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I finally got the correct 12v adapter plate and also got a bell housing for the transmission.
Adapter Plate http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...A99E3EF90B.jpg Everything mounted to the transmission http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...A9AE5668FA.jpg Next step is to start mounting it up. Everything will get painted later, but its starting to get cold and I cant heat my shop so painting is going to have to wait. Once I get the motor mounted I am going to pull the cab and make the transmission cross member and then start working on all the small stuff I need to do to get this thing running. I have to run all new brake lines, fuel lines, and install a 40 gallon burb tank in the back. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Tonight I went ahead and set the motor in so that I can start fabbing up mounts. I have the motor setting on 4 jack stands and still have my chain hoist holding up on it some but it looks to be right where I need it.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...24B349C417.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...24B9446309.jpg Underneath http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...24BECABB65.jpg Front to rear angle (5*) http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...2496E877C8.jpg Side to side http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...24ADBE831E.jpg Planning on trying to get the transmission and transfercase bolted up behind it this weekend and then start making the mounts. Not sure how I am going to do this just yet as I dont have a transmission jack, but I have used my shop crane to put my sm465 and np205 in this truck before so I may try that again. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Awesome! Cant wait to see how your mounts work out!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got up this morning and decided to get the transmission and transfercase in. It actually went in pretty easy using my shop crane.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...F8F0262844.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...F8F73C0E02.jpg Going to start making mounts for the drivetrain soon. Looks like everything is in a good place and im happy with it. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well started making the mounts, my first plan was not going to work so I have started a new idea. So far so good.
Passenger side http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...7A789C11CC.jpg Start of the drivers side http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...7A8023DD53.jpg There will be a lot of gussets added so it will be strong. Hoping to get these finished and then make a removable cross member soon. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got the mounts made today. Went a little different than what I was starting out with. Took 2x4x1/4 tubing and cut the top part off and made my mounts.
Passenger side http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...47AB5330FF.jpg Passenger side mounted http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...47A47EB7C1.jpg Drivers side http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...47B40547F4.jpg Drivers side mounted http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...47B97EF91C.jpg I will be putting gussets on the bottom as well for added strength. Next thing to do is make the transmission cross member then I will pull the drive train out and fully weld all of the mounts then I'm going to drop the drive train back in and figure out something for an engine cross member. Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I have finally gotten some stuff done to the truck this past week. First I had to make a mount that went from the transmission to the transmission mount and then i made the cross piece for the cross member.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...C8B482FFBF.jpg I then needed to connect the cross member to the frame so I made these 1" slugs with 2 1/2 inch holes in them for the bolts. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...2565F91E36.jpg And here is the whole thing tacked in. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...2576FF6D27.jpg The brackets on the frame will be gusseted so it should hold pretty well. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Looking good. Is your front drive shaft going to clear it?
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Oh yeah there is plenty of room

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got the drive train pulled and welded up the the mounts. Dropped the motor back in to make sure that the mounts would hold the weight.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...26739D6397.jpg Will be picking up a dana 60 front axle for the truck monday. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well last night I was able to make my trip to pick up a dana 60.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
if you have access to an arbor press, you can load them with the press and tap the axle ear with a hammer. small taps with the cap under pressure will pop it free usually. they are pretty easy if you use the hammer. ive done a few that had an a lot of pressure on them when they pop and it makes a really sweet bang

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Nice score on the D60! Or you can use a U-joint press if you have one. A couple more big parts and you'll have it near driving.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yeah, where are these parts at? I have a big ass vice and sockets. That what I've done with other ujoints.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
The frame sat level before I put the dana 60 in the truck. So it raised the front some when I put it in. So i decided to do a shackle flip on the rear of the truck. I used the rear front mounts that where on the frame when it was 2wd. I will be adding some extra bracing to them from the bottom of the frame.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
You may consider a block for the steering arm, or a raised arm. that thing is going to have some bumpsteer at that angle
this is my jeep, and it still has bumpsteer http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...5/100_1395.jpg better toss in one after the Howe! http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...100_1519-1.jpg im looking forward to seeing how you do your gooseball ryan |
