Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
Hey J...you had asked for info on cutting the door frame. I asked and it was actually done by glock and here's the thread with some pictures. As you can see I was mistaken on where the cut was made.

Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
Just read the whole thread - at every point of this build your attention to detail and craftsmanship is not just noticeable, but outstanding. I've read a few "I'm gonna steal that idea!"....I think I'm gonna steal all your ideas!

very awesome build.. Just when I thought I did a really clean job with my airline and brake line I saw this thread and my mind is blown! so so so awesome.. and the door trimming tip is outstanding. my driver door is so tight in the upper corner it makes me sick to think i ignored it, now ive got chipped paint there ha ha. maybe time for a little revision and spotting in my upper door frames!

The passenger door is finished. I will post pics later today. |
Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
Got the drivers side door finished. The curved part of the window frame was just about hitting the cab, so some reconstructive surgery happened. I had two pairs of doors; the doors that were original to the cab which were rusted to hell on the bottom, and a second pair I bought that were rust free. So what I did was took the window frame out of the original doors (kind of as practice to make sure I could get the window frame out) and put the window frame in the good shells. I also cut the frame at the upper left hand corner to fix the door gap in that area. Then I positioned the window frame in the door shell where I wanted it and spot welded it back in. Here is a before and after:
BEFORE http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4146/...16d75a45_z.jpg AFTER http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4131/...03892eac_z.jpg This is what it looks like after you get it out http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4087/...c1542d5f_z.jpg Here is the frame out and where I cut and welded it http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4132/...088bab3b_z.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4148/...1200d44a_z.jpg Here is how the other door gaps came out. Not too shabby for a first timer! Remember, I replaced the entire floor, both lower pillars, cab corner, and the rocker. I'm pretty happy with the results. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/...bb617d5e_z.jpg The right end of the rocker was sliced and new metal put in to align with the door. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/...fe591baa_z.jpg You've probably seen this before, but here is a way to be able to hold a small filler piece of meta,l that you cant get behind, for welding. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4133/...5f0324d9_z.jpg Last one of the day: Here is how to bolt a door on all by yourself. I had a piece of left over steel that was in the shape of a "c". One lip was small enough to tuck under the door so I could bolt a strap to it and lift the door with a hoist. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4111/...9392922a_b.jpg |
Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
That's a cool trick...maybe a picture of what the steel piece looks like. It looks like it really helped to get them on with good gaps.

Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
OK, so its been an ETERNITY since I last updated this thread. I actually have been working on the truck consistently....SLOW. As I probably have cried about previously, I only get a few hours on the weekends to work.
The past year I have worked on getting the front sheetmetal in order. This involved sourcing a new fender, a new core support, patching fenders, shaving marker lights, finishing porterbuilt hinges, and spending probably 50-75 hours on the cowl panel. The cowl panel was the last piece of the puzzle, so almost every edge of that was sliced and diced to make fit good. Here are two pictures on the new lower cup on the passenger side fender: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7164/6...b0a06a3a_z.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7164/6...94de36b3_z.jpg Another replacement panel on the passenger side panel. After doing these two patches, I said screw it and bought a rust free driver side fender. LOL! http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7035/6...f958d450_z.jpg here is an in progress shot of the marker light filler panel...going for that 67 look! http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7004/6...140f00fe_z.jpg Ok, so on to the cowl panel, this area did not fit nice at all, so out came the cut off wheel to reposition the metal for a nice uniform gap. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7157/6...b4ac2eda_z.jpg some more pie cuts to align the cowl to hood. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7011/6...cafdfe18_z.jpg Here is a picture of adding some 3/16 inch rod because the cowl to fender gap was too big. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7034/6...4682d722_z.jpg Same deal with the cowl to door gap. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7010/6...93955cee_z.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7150/6...6221f266_z.jpg The cowl to hood gap needed to widen a bit. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7015/6...25190fd0_z.jpg ALL DONE!!! http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7158/6...fab41192_z.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7023/6...7970e554_z.jpg Porterbuilt hinges tacked in place. A little advice, when you are aligning body panels, make sure you have your struts on because they push the hood up in the rear. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7175/6...d954a28f_z.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7021/6...a4705887_z.jpg Hood Up. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7147/6...56a28e10_z.jpg I also installed the porterbuilt updated motor mount to frame stiffening pieces. Thanks Nate! A free upgrade, what a guy! http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7171/6...e834ba68_z.jpg Here's how the truck sits as of today. My rollers are gone since my buddy took them back after letting me use them for a few years. I thought he had forgotten! LOL http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7151/6...3bc1c304_z.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7142/6...ed03edf4_z.jpg Well thats about a years of work. Doesn't look like I accomplished a lot in 2011, but I put a ton of time in it seem like. Next up is the bed. |
