My drama on Saturday morning started about 2.5 hours later than I committed to, due to some family logistics issues, and because my truck was behind a huge camper trailer and my boat, I didn’t get the truck flat-bedded up to the muffler guy until 10:30. Needless to say - he was mad a wet hen and his parking lot was full of other customer’s vehicles when we finally arrived. $50 tip to the AAA driver and he was gone. The remaining lift was a high type - about 12" off the floor with long steel ramps and because my truck has no brakes yet and the TH350’s linkage isn’t hooked up yet - we couldn’t just shove it up on the rack without having it go off the opposite end. The "tug" this guy uses was locked up in the transmission shop - in the back - that’s why my guy was ticked. OH, THE DRAMA!http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:...n~s600x600.jpg Fortunately, the transmission shop guy just happened to come back a few minutes later, and with my best B/S line, I was able to convince him to open up his slide door and bring out the tug. Two minutes later my truck was up on rack. Tried to tip him too - but he just looked at me like I said something about his mother. So, at about 15:00 my time - I’m going to go see what my muffler guy did to my truck. And once this is done I’ll need to start thinking of some new excuses to keep from lighting this old rig off. Mac. :chevy: |

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
love the little pics...so funny!!
:haha: too bad about the pipes :( |
Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
After work - went to the Pipe Dude's place, because he hadn't called - to see if he'd actually got anything done on the exhaust system. (Again, he's using my mufflers and resonators.)
When I got there the C10 was actually up in the air and everything tacked into place. I'd given him the option of going 90 degrees out from the frame, just in front of the rear wheels - or at an angle, and he went with the latter. Unfortunately, his wire feed died on his welder and that unit was torn apart, spread all over the floor. http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:...mages/wray.jpg OH, THE HUMANITY! |

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Saturday at about 10AM, my time: That's when I'm planning to light her off.
Being very realistic - the only thing that will prohibit that event is the weather, with the huge low-pressure system hanging off the coast here presently. It was drizzling heavily on the way home from the exhaust guy yesterday, but got a tarp over 'The Tan' before it started coming down too much. $260 for parts and labor - really simple mounting system (yes, the pictures will be coming soon) welded to the frame rails - good and solid, but with a rubber mounting block with a rod welded to the fat ol' mufflers. Looks slick - hope they sound as good. $50 tip to both the pipe guy and the tow truck driver, and he put the C10 right where I wanted it in the driveway in front of the house. Mac.:chevy: |

But like the guys here at the shop, I should have sold tickets to this event - like when you go to the drags. They all say half the reason they go is to hear the AA fuelers light off and they think, somehow, my starting of this 44 year old pick-up ASAP is going to feed that primal need. Mac. :chevy: |

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Okay - initial start up pointers are coming in from the guys at the shop - see what you think:
A./ Use starting fluid - it makes it easier to get going. Didn’t do this on the Chevelle’s crate engine - fired off instantly - spit for a second until I rotated the HEI a few degrees - then smoothed right out. B./ Don’t use starting fluid - too heavy of a load on the brand new bearings and rotating assembly. C./ Fast idle at 2,000 - to 2,200 RPM, for 20 full minutes to break the cam in. D./ Fast idle no quicker than 1,500 RPM, for just 10 minutes. E./ Leave the radiator cap off so you can see if the coolant is flowing. F./ Jack the rear end up - just clearing the tires off the ground - in case the transmission is in gear. (remember - the linkage to the shifter hasn’t been hooked up yet). G./ Do not start the motor unless you’re sure it is in PARK only - something about tranny fluid leaking out the tail because the yoke’s extended out about 1.5" more than usual. Comments? http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:...1/confused.jpg |
Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
IMHO...NEVER use starting fluid....
I have always heard to break in the cam bring it up to 2000rpm and yes leave the radiator cap off, the level will go down and you will probably need to add some coolant.....it would go easier if you have someone to help ya...... brakes on your truck work? do you have a drive shaft in it? |
Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Quote:
No brakes. Drive shaft is in - but need to get it lengthened at the tranny shop. |
Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
cool!
yeah with no brakes I think I would jack up the rear....it would suck for it to fire and take off with no way to stop it other than kill the ignition:devil: |
