Re: Project: Recycle
My measurements from last night were accurate.
I cut the flange portion (where the rubber trans mount/bushing sits) off of the ECE trans x-member today @ lunch & cleaned up the welding slag. I grabbed a 4x6 piece of .250" plate & tacked it in place (now on the 'bottom' of the square tube vs. the 'top'). I installed the x-member & lowered the drivetrain. With a 3/16" 'shim', I'm @ 0.1° off from level (measured @ the intake/carb mounting pad). I put the level/angle finder on the trans yoke & I'm getting 2.7°. Another thing I verified is the ECE T/A x-member d.shaft loop isn't going to be tall enough to clear the shaft (needed the drivetrain in to 100% verify). Looks like I'll need to increase the height an inch or 2. I think I'm good to go but will confirm a couple of questions first. If my answers are what I expect (and I can't believe I'm about to say this), the chassis will come apart for some blasting & color..... |
Re: Project: Recycle
Do you have to disassemble the whole thing for Krylon?!?
just kidding, Scot. Glad it is coming together. |

Yeah, I forgot. I found an extra spray can trigger so let me know when the big day is.

If you decide to paint instead of powdercoat let me know, I've got a few connections on stuff.

Dang, you guys sent me to the 2nd page. Where's the love??
Ok..... I'll make a small update to keep things on track. I got the sbc/700r4 into the spare frame in order to verify the driveline angles & needed some pinion shims so I could accurately set the trans mount height. I got the shims in today so I'll try & get some time on it this weekend. Baseball (Rangers are in the play-offs) has been occupying some of my spare time so until the 'fat lady sings', I might be going to the home games. Oh.... the other thing taking up my time (& thoughts) is my new to me dually that I swapped my 74 for. Although not a project, I'm getting a few 'essentials' to make it unmistakenly 'mine' ;) . . . ...... |
Re: Project: Recycle
Congrats on the trade. Now what are those pieces, ya lost me . And u know we need a pic of the dually.

Re: Project: Recycle
Man that sure is a nice dually, it just needs to be a little lower.;)

All the luxuries of home in that baby. And if Momma gets made you got your own coach to sleep on..;)

Re: Project: Recycle
I think the dually is going to be sweet, once you work your magic on it. I am looking forward to seeing that. Also looking forward to seeing the '64 rolling down the street. It is going to be amazing.

Re: Project: Recycle
Thats ok. I just like to day dream about owning one.. I have to convince the wife a dually would be practical for a daily driver.

Re: Project: Recycle
Nice Dually!!! It's even in my favorite color.:metal:

Re: Project: Recycle
Nice dually SCOTI!
Will we see it towing your '64 to KS next year? :D |

It doesn't have to be a full resto to start a build thread. Just post lots of pics and we will all be happy!! Take us on the journey with you :) Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Project: Recycle
I guess it's time for another update. I'm really, actually, no bs-ing, closer to getting it PC'd.
I got off work yesterday & spent the day re-stripping the rails & various x-members to try & get any residual grinding gouges out so that when sand-blasted, everything has a nice, smooth finish for the PC. About 3/4 through stripping the pass side frame rail, my DA took a crap. I've done this drill before (get 6hrs non-stop work time but spend most of it chasing parts/tools) & it was frustrating so I kept it going forward.... The chassis is no longer a chassis. I had that sucker 100% apart in a little over an hour (working solo). The rails & rear end housing are still in the shop (need to finish that pass side rail) but everything else was loaded into the dually & is waiting for the trip Monday to the PC shop. I hope to convince 'her' of the need to allow some late-night shop time tonight so I can get things loaded first thing tomorrow am. |
Re: Project: Recycle
Glad to hear it Scoti. Lets see some shiny stuff...:)
|
Re: Project: Recycle
Sounds like a lot of progress just working solo. Looking forward to seeing it back from the coater.
|
Re: Project: Recycle
Just got home from the shop.
Both the main rails are void of gouges, rust-pits, & production scars. Everything has a nice consistent 60 grit finish so the rails should look fairly smooth after blasting & color. Tomorrow morning, I'll hook up the trailer & head back to the shop to load them up (I already have all the other parts & x-members @ the house). After everything is in the same place, I'll take an inventory to make sure nothing was over-looked. If the parts match my 'list', I'll stop by 2 different PC shops for quotes. Price pending, I'll leave the parts @ one of them. I would put up some pics but my computer crashed & I'm using a borrowed laptop. Hopefully by the time the parts are done, I'll be able to start loading up some pics again. |
Re: Project: Recycle
cant wait to see it , i am hopefully about 1 month away from doing this myself, all of my rear suspension is done already, so it will just be the main frame rails and the front suspension, anyway i am excited for you !!

And, poof . . .... It's all gone!
|
Re: Project: Recycle
Looks like it is all there. What about the front spindles and the rear end housing? What color are you going to use?
I forgot to ask, are you going to bolt the complete assembly back together and not have any welded/rivet'd cross members? Are you going to use grade 8 fasteners? |
Re: Project: Recycle
Never seen one taken down that far. Very interesting. :metal:
|
Re: Project: Recycle
I guess the 'usual' is the front splash pan, shock x-member, & Panhard bar x-members remain in place even when stripped down for PC-ing.
Since I had to re-work each of the rear x-members & the front splash pan was in the way of some frame tweaks, everything had to come out. I thought about the re-assembly process & the 'pros/cons' of just using nuts/bolts or if welding would be necessary. I haven't decided one way or another but I'm always open to others experiences. |
Re: Project: Recycle
Bolting it back together shouldn't be a problem. Of course I'm sure you would be using grade 8 hardware and squaring it up. You wouldn't want to be welding on it after powder coating anyway
|

And yes, everything (and I mean everything) is MINIMUM GRADE-8 hardware. |

There's still more to do so there will be a 2nd PC load. The T/A x-member is yet to be finalized (always used 1pc driveshafts & Porter has got me convinced a 2pc is the better way to go this low). Once everthing is reassembled, I'll be able to finish up the trans x-member. After that, both will get coated along w/any other 'forgotten' items. The spindles, calipers, & a-arms will be epoxied. |

The current ride height is screwing w/my view when backing (I can't see the end of the trailer @ all) & it's a thirsty SoaB. But, since there's no payment, I'll live w/it until the LS swap. I just got home from the shop. It's been a long, but productive day ;) . |
Re: Project: Recycle
there these backupcams out there mounted in the numberplatesuround , havent checked prices lately but they where reasonably priced i might be a solution to the backup problem if you can get it either to look underneat the trailer or between the trailer and the car on top of it
