Re: New project

Things were going good and after a 3rd round win I pull back to the trailer and jump on the scooter headed to watch the rest of the round . I get back to the truck and water is everywhere . I top It off and run the water pump ......no leaks . Start it up and it blowing water out between front of head and block . Lost the driver side head gasket . So I load up the yellow truck on a borrowed trailer and truck and haul it home to swap it for the blue truck . Was .001 to a .056 and couldn't get there . Left 6 numbers on the big end! 7.41 on a 7.35 dial. I was about to load up and my buddy wont let me . Bought back in and went 2 more rounds . I was like .038 and he was .027 . I only had .011 and took .013 for the break out . He dumped for the win . Anyway pics .

Re: New project

Heads were unshrouded to 4.100 for 4.125 bore and we used 4.060 gaskets . Smallest was 4.070 so fire ring was in chamber . Once it got enough heat to break the fire ring it pushed compression passed the sealer part of the gasket . Each hole had marks from the chamber edge in the ring . TO get the quench correct we ordered 4.165" .029 . This will be more than enough and only lose 1 CC per hole . Head and block is good . I am about to pull the passenger side head . Ill try and get pics together.

Got this thing back together . Set the valves to the cam card at .022I and .024E . It was a noisy SOB and ran like crap . Reset them at .020/.020 totally different motor . Next go round will be .018 for all them . Ready to go for the weekend . Need to bolt the hood back on and double check the timing . The first batch of fuel I got was 84% . I only bought 2 jugs . 5 days later I bought 3 more jugs they are 76% . I will drain the 84% and switch to 76% which should put my A/F ratio dead on . We will see .

Do you leave off a trans-brake or foot? If Trans why not try an adjustable button?

Re: New project

Looks like its running good HotRod. How red are you going? Arent you already using an adjustable T/B switch? Can you fit a taller front tire? Questions questions lol

Going to try a set of 26" fronts also . That right lane is still messed up and nobody will fix it . Hopefully after the national nhra will fix them .

Just almost too much work Truck has been on jack stands for the last 4 races . This weekend was no different . Guess I missed tightening a head bolt and had a water leak . It filled the diaper up with water and one of the header tubes burned through and found water . Had to drop the exhaust headers and front crossmember in the pits to get it off before first round . It was full . Found the leak in a head bolt and tightened it . Water leak stopped . I actually lost a round last sunday other than that red first and second round . On a good note swapping to 76% made the truck A/F ratios perfect and very consistant .

Re: New project

Hotrod It looks like you may be yanking the front tires out of the beams. If you have an adjustable front ladderbar crossmember you could try lowering them one hole. This should make the truck move forward more instead of upward. Or like you said change the launch rpm( I move mine as much as 600 rpm throughout the year) because i do a lot of my setup by 60 ft numbers. I dont know that there is still a problem with that right lane. NHRA sets up our stuff starting on Fri morning at our races. Hence my numbers in my delay box are .030 less from the TNT numbers on Thursday(local track setup)

hotrod 80 03-15-2016 11:51 AM

Re: New project

Im leaf spring and Caltracs . So changing pinion angle is a no go . I am just thinking im gonna try moving launch rpm and tire pressure together . Say 36# @ 3600 rpm if im late i'll go 3700 and 37psi and so on . Im at 4200 and 44psi now .

Re: New project

Been working on this thing and it started leaking water again from the small head bolts . I pulled both headers and valve covers to do a retorque on the heads . All the bolts were tight at 70#s except the lower small bolts and every one of them to 1/4 turn to get to 70#s . These are new ARP bolts . Initial torque was to 75 and no threads pulled as they all reset to 70# without stripping . I don't know if they stretched or what , but it stopped leaking water ......for now . I have an oil issue in the front , but it is more of a film then a leak . and I have a trans drip now and then so ill check that out this week . I also went up 1 jet size in all 4 corners.

If your up to date on this you know I have had issues with red lighting with the new combo . I have been leaving at 4200 with 45# in the 25" fronts and 14 in the rears . Well I made some changes for this weekend . dropped the 2 step to 3500 and set the fronts at 40 # . I run IHRA at Ben Bruce memorial racepark in Evadale , Texas and yesterday was the season opener . So first time trial im .020 red .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...psjdj0vmor.jpg
I cooled it down and moved the 2 step to 3000 and the fronts to 34#
and was .031 green ....which was actually a relief to me .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...psqkaflwgt.jpg
Cooled it down again and topped off the air and headed to first round thinking .031 was better than red . I added 2# to the fronts @36# and left the 2 step alone . Ended up with the 1st round W with a .022 light and scrubbing 5 mph at the end .

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...psdu166lbm.jpg
Brought it back and cooled it down again and set up like round 1 and the dam .022 got me the bye . Since I had made a pass in the right and I ended up with a single I chose the left . .000 and 7 slow . The left lane was bad .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...ps3lheulnu.jpg
Again I cooled it down and set up the same . After 3rd round they swap to a ladder and the best reaction time has lane choice . I chose the right lane better of the 2 and a faster car . set up a bit soft from the.000 .
and was .074
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...psfugl9gbr.jpg
They stacked the ladder again and amazingly I got lane choice again . Chose the right lane again Way late , but dead on 9 and she spun and I found the hole .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...psphgamu8u.jpg
Headed into the finals and I definitely do not have lane choice . I dial up 5 on what my split time tells me and start heating the bottle . Everyone has spun in the left lane , but most are on some sort of radial . I slow down extension on the rear 1 click and head up to the line . Sure enough I got the left lane . I told my opponent " you keep your Hoosier radial , ill keep my bias ply , 300 shot and the lane you don't want " . did a big burn out and BAM! .....it hooked . I tree'd him by .011 and took.008 strip on a double breakout for the win .

Well a quick update I am 5 rounds out of 1st place in IHRA now guess I had converter issues . The sprag was bad . Going fender well headers and front coil overs . Losing 150 # in torsion bars and cross members . Also bought a really nice Hughes cased glide and my rebuilt wally winning ATI converter . Should b3e 6.0? still no electronics .

Thinking about building a 7.0 / 10.90 truck .

Man is it ever hot . I put the Honda to work last night at evadale trying to get a handle on the new trans combo , but think I got it lined out . Last passes were .501 in the left and .508 in the right With a pair of 10.25

Actually had a decent outing . I lost in the final with a redlight , but made up a round or 2 on the points leader . It is me and him now . No one else can reach us . 2 Races left in the IHRA season and 4 left in the NHRA season . Wally race on the 6/7th of august . Taking both trucks and running both classes . Also lost a tire on the way home .

Is that by chance a Goodyear Marathon? Lots of bad reviews about the Marathon trailer tires falling apart early. I wsn't going to risk destroying a inner fender (and it coming inside to the car) I took them off both of my trailers and went to Carlisle trailer tires. Have no idea if they are better but have a lifetime warrantee on the carcus not coming apart . Heck even with a bad wheel bearing I haven't ever worn a trailer tire tread out. So maybe free tires for life hu (lol)

My local tire shop , Long's tire in Baytown , also a sponsor told me this is a towmaster tire. It said made in USA . it was manufactured 15 week of 2015 , so less than a year old . He said it looked like I hit something . I didn't lose a truck tire though . im going 16" now for sure . Been grinding on this track championship so hard I cant keep up .

Re: New project

Looking for some advice here . I am needing new tires , but funds wont provide . I have been running a 29.5 x 10.5 W . I have a set of 28 x 10.5 W s with 8 passes . Guess im gonna make the tire swap Friday and test. I am also thinking about pulling the exhaust since im making a change and could use the extra .10 in et that I lost from the heat . Just cant justify new slicks , IHRA bracket finals, NHRA bracket finals and possibly IHRA world finals . That adds up to a lot of money .

hotrod 80 09-03-2016 09:42 PM

Re: New project

Well I didn't get any opinions , but I did mount the 28Ws Friday and pull the exhaust . The exhaust was 54# . The truck loved it . I dropped from 1.46-1.47 60' to 1.40-1.41 60 I also picked up 1 mph . First time trial I was .033 I took .020 out of the long through and was deadly all day . Ended up with the win tonight . Needed a win going into next weekend .
