Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Thanks, Kimble! I'm mentally preparing for a couple of projects on the 66.
1) Convert the engine accessories to an early 90s serpentine setup. I pulled this of a 454 sub at the junkyard a year ago. I just hate to pull off the brand new water pump and alternator. And with the switch to long water pump the fan clutch might not clear the radiator... 2) NV4500 + NP205 swap. Have everything I need. Just need to swap in the short 32 spline input to the round np205 and bolt it all together. Oh, almost forgot I need to swap in the twin stick rails while I'm in there. In the mean time I stumbled across this for a nice price on craigslist. The guy I purchased from has a sweet 61 GMC suburban. He also had a burb tank for 60-62 wider frame. Once I get this in I'll have 20 gallon behind the seat and 20 under the bed. I need to figure out how I'm going to switch between the two tanks. http://jase-ace.com/public/photo/196...k%20-%2001.jpg http://jase-ace.com/public/photo/196...k%20-%2002.jpg |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Thats a pretty crazy looking tank Jason. As for switching, I'm sure you can get a selector for just about any dual tank set up and run that. The key is in the gauge switching. I'm running into a bit of a wiring issue with mine as well. 0-90 behind the seat and the later 100+ ohm in the back. Gonna take a few to figure it out.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Oh, and I somehow inherited this old Kawasaki KZ650 with a KZ750 motor.
If I can get it running decently it will be turned into a little cafe racer. Anyway, I'm trying not to let this distract me from the pickup and the burb. http://jase-ace.com/public/photo/197...e%20-%2003.jpg Hopefully it will eventually look something like this: http://jase-ace.com/public/photo/197...0KZ650/001.jpg |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Chris, it is a 63-66 Suburban tank. 20 gallons made to fit our truck frames. I just need some kind of selector switch and three way solenoid valve.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I had a KZ650 back in the 90's... nice little bike with loads of power, for what it was.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
WHAT!!!! Too flippin cool! Where'd ya get it? Looks cherry! Gonna look awesome on BU!
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Going to pick it up tomorrow or Thursday. It was a reasonable price so I figured I'd see how I like it. I'll post another pic once I get it on there. need to find a way to mount it without drilling holes in my bed rails... I have some ideas.
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Love it!
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Not cherry, but definitely not bad!
My dad rode out with me to pick it up earlier tonight. To be honest, I was pretty nervous as we drove out to pick it up. I kept thinking I might regret buying this thing. My dad was skeptical too. But once we dropped it on the truck I was in love. I think this funky old camper shell looks pretty good on old Big ugly! The jury is still out on the blue acrylic windows, but it doesn't look like they're easily replaced. http://jase-ace.com/public/photo/196...p%20-%2001.jpg |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Hey Jason I like it..looks Good definitely old school... I would love to find a slide in camper for mine..

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Totally goes with the Big Ugly theme, and you can change out the blue for green to I bet. Since I have seen those old aluminum campers with blue or green windows.
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Dude,The camper looks great on the truck.Did you strip that paint off the tank or did you find another?I have an older suzuki tank and a set of drum brake wheels if you wana make that bike look older.
(I just figured out this is your build thread...i a lil slow.lol) |

Jason----looks cool--perfect! NOW i want one lol.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I wonder if a guy could take a buffer and shine it up? like the Airstream campers maybe...
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Nah! That'd be way too nice for ol' Ugly. Just a simple soap and water wash will do!
Besides its galvanized sheet metal so it wouldn't polish up even if I tried. |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Picked up these Dodge buddy buckets tonight. Good price and they're in decent condition, just ready for some saddle colored upholstery to match my "interior". Seems that some minor mods can be done to bolt this into my cab. Its actually kind of similar to the 66 style buddy seat frame. I'm going to make sure it sits a little higher like the 66 Chevy version.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
very nice. the bed cap is about perfect too.
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I'm really digging the bed cap. The seats are nice as well.
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Looking good.
What dodge vehicle did the seats come from? |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I think the guy said a 72 dodge pickup?
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Hey Jason, I just noticed that you have the round mirrors. How do you like them? Ive got the square ones on the pedestal mounts like yours and they drive me crazy. At anything over 25 -30 mph, they vibrate so much that I can barely see whats behind me. Do yours do any better?
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
He just says Dodge buddy buckets. Unless I missed where he said 1972. If it is a 1972 Dodge truck then it will probably be harder to find those then an original Chevy one.
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I meant that the guy I bought them from said a 70-something dodge pickup. I think he said 72 but I don't remember.
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Oh sorry I didn't realize it was you that said it. So the guy you got them from said 1972 truck I got it!!! Duh!

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Chris, these aren't the typical 5" aftermarket mirrors. They are stainless 6" convex mirrors. I have used the 5" round ones before and i think they are too small to be useful. I also hate the way the cheap aftermarket crap starts rusting so quickly. I couldn't find a 6" round with flat glass so I bought these. Turns out the convex are nice because there are no blind spots, but they take some getting used to refocusing your eyes. The real plan was to take these to a glass shop and see if they can replace the convex mirror with flat but I haven't gotten around to seeing if someone can do it. I also tried the rectangular ones. The viewing area was nice but they made an annoying whistling sound at higher speeds. Plus I think the round looks good.
I dont really remember having any vibration issues. I have noticed that the aftermarket mirror arms are thinner steel than the originals, thus they vibrate more. I also have stiff poly motor and trans mounts. I'll have to pay closer attention to check for vibration when im driving. |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Chris,
Here is the view at 0 and at 65 mph. No major vibrations. http://jase-ace.com/public/photo/196...r%20-%2001.jpg http://jase-ace.com/public/photo/196...r%20-%2002.jpg |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I have the square aftermarket mirrors, and they are solid as a rock at speed.
Nor do they make any wind noises. I like the convex mirror idea. |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
They're nice because I have no blind spots.
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I must have picked up some crappy ones. Jason, are your mirror arms aftermarket too? If so, where did you get them.
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I think I got them from Truck Shop. But its been a long time.
The ones I bought from Classic Industries seemed thinner and the flat bent part where the mirror head mounts isn't really bent at the correct angle. The mirrors can barely pivot far enough to get into the correct position. |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Jason I see you went through the trouble of relocating your gas filler to the passenger side.LOL That's what it looked like from the picture taken through the mirror...I had those crazy factory SHAKER'S on my 70 Burb I couldn't see anything those things shaked all the time... those round covex, concave which ever they are do work very well as you said
no blind spots..I know a lot of people add those small ones like that to the bottom of their mirrors to correct that problem I think I need to add them to the wife's Nissan thye will save you from an accident.. I've been close a few times because of those blind spots... |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Love the truck!! Whats next?
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Jason when you put that big block in your truck did it bolt right to the v-8 crossmember or did it have to be modified..
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I forgot you have the original frame so I guess you had to modify, my frame is a 1970..
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I used the engine crossmember from a 67-72 K10 and a trans/transfer case crossmember from a 73 K20. I estimate that it is mounted about 2" further forward than a small block would be.
I know some people have been able to make it fit in the stock location, but I couldn't. You never know if the motor is sitting a little higher or lower depending on their engine crossmember, or more or less tilt depending on their trans crossmember. You'll just have to try to get it in there and see what works for you. Hope that helps... |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Jason you been mighty quiet, any new updates...
