lol, bet you would! better put my bed, doors, and fenders back inside. No swiping! You can borrow them as long as you return them with new tires ;)
Ellie is much better now but I spent most of my time off with her so not as much progress got done as I wanted.

Happy New Year!

It's been a while since I've been on here. Looks like you are making some good progress; wish I could say the same. I have not been getting notifications of your updates, and I have not been on here for a while.

Nice job on the frame fix, and I am so jealous that you got some last minute Twinkies. I love Twinkies. Nice wheels also!

I have been sidetracked with a major home improvement project, and a major lack of motivation, but I am trying to get re-motivated, and hopefully perusing the board will help me.

Hopefully I'll start getting your updates sent to me again, and maybe I'll get my butt moving on my project soon.

Thanks D, them Twinkies were gooooood! I used to eat frozen twinkies and drink Mountain Dew when I was a skater boy. mmm sugar! You better get to work on that truck!;)

I'm seeing a little light at the end of the tunnel on this project, but I can still see the bottom of my wallet unfortunately.

Thanks, Keep on practicing it will pay off. Wish I could have spent 15 hrs a day while on break. I spend most of the time off watching my daughter, shes a little young to help me yet but we had good times though. I will have to check back on you and LUCY soon.

Pics coming right up:chevy:

Okay I flipped the frame over with my hoist and removed the front crossmember since I buggered up a rivet earlier. It also had a big dent in it that I could not get straight with it installed so I straightened it once I got it out. Cant really see the damage in the pic since I already bent it part of the way back then beat it straight on the ground with a bfh. Looked like someone wrapped a pull chain around it. I tapped the holes and reinstalled it (got the tapping idea from another member, I forget who). :smoke::sumo::chevy: (my daughter likes to pick smileys, sorry for the excessive use)

Having some internet issues... Hope this one goes through

Okay I trimmed the frame rails, No I'm not crazy :uhmk:(maybe a little) the 67 frame rails are 2.5" wide on either side of the engine where later frames are 1.8". This causes some header rubbing issues so I trimmed about .5" off the upper and .375" in one trouble spot along the bottom flanges where my previous headers were making love to the frame and wore a hole in the header (see the rub spot I am pointing to).

I wish I would have thought of that before reassembling mine. Had to use the dremel on it to make a relief cut in the frame with the motor and headers already installed due to that very same issue. Not enough clearance!

Great work and progress!

Hey Dan,

Frozen Twinkies, huh? I liked them at room temperature, nice and soft, and mushy. Never tried or even thought of trying to freeze them. Bet it made a nice summer time treat.

I am slowly getting myself motivated again. For starters, I am viewing posts on this board again, which helps. I also started messing with my carburetor again today, which is a dismally sort of long story (I'll post it on my thread, so as not to hi-jack yours), but it's a start in the right direction. My next step is to get out there, fire up the propane heater, and start welding again.

I am probably even more impressed with your grinding skills than your welding skills. It really looked like it was never welded in the first place. As I heard on one of those car shows once, it does not matter if you aren't the best welder, if you know how to grind really well.

Talk to ya soon.

I use the Dewalt .045 cut off wheels on my 4.5" grinder. I taped off the cut line and first walked the cut off wheel down the cut line to kinda score the line thinking it would help keep it in line when I cut through. I cut through very carefully and keep a steady hand. In your case being powdercoated it would probably get hot and mess up the finish, I have cut powdercoated steel at work and it does burn a little at the cut. If you cut yours maybe tape the whole frame rail and cut through the tape? I hear this reduces chipping. I was not to concerned because I had to finish painting a few places anyway.

Thanks Eric, I thought something was funny when I bought the truck and noticed the headers were rubbing the frame. I found out the info about 67 frame rails being wider on here before I got started. Sure is a lot of wacky differences on these trucks.

Thanks D, I need one of those heaters in my garage.
On "grinding" I dont use a grinding stones just the sand paper flappers in 120 grit and also 2" roloc disks on a air angle die grinder. The sand paper wheels cost more and don't last near as long but they knock down welds fast and clean. Not to mention they are not near as loud when grinding. (see pic)

I aint skeerd, I have a vinyl seat

Updates, updates here we go. Here is my power steering dimple mod. Clearancing the frame is required on 67 models. There are a few ways to skin a cat and this is my version. I cut a relief slit above and below the area that needed to move. Then here is the fun part. Many people heat up the frame and pound on it with a bfh, slits or no slits, seems pretty crude. I set up to "suspect press" to do the work for me. Heat up the area with a torch, pull the lever, more heat, more pressing. Reposition and do it some more untill satisfied. Then weld up the slits, smooth it out just a little. Clearance the core support mount also as it hits the PS box and will not allow it to bolt up. Paint it and done:smoke:

Mocked up my Boyd's tank, drilled the flange holes on the tank. I used existing holes in the frame and 4 1/2-13 bolts. I am going to have to raise the tank 1.5" because I dont like how the filler neck sits below the top of the frame. Bolted it in for now, will have to come up with a solution to raise it up....

more of the tank bolted in... Dang this thing is sexy! great craftsmanship by Dave Boyd of Boyd welding, I would buy another and highly recommend them!

Last pic shows my issue with the height of the fill neck. Should have gotten the straight up filler neck.

Probably on the inner bedside with an access door. (not on the outside!)
Or maybe a marine filler in the bed floor if I raise the floor up.
Or maybe a popup filler where the stake hole used to be.
Or I don't know:uhmk:

Thanks. The summer of 2011, I did heads, cam, headers, stall, posi, etc, the Works to my '01 silverado. I needed a press to install the Comp Cams rocker arm trunion upgrade. I found that steel behind the shop at work and got an idea. It's nice to see plenty of use out of it. It's pretty heavy duty too, a bit overkill for the rocker arm job, but looks perfect for pushing on his frame.

Thanks guys! I thought the Boyds tank was the star of the show .

Really the press is pretty ingenious, simple but ingenious. Daniel (Suspect) did a fine job. If you use it horizontally you have to have the valve on bottom in order to pump it up. You know how many times you are working on something large and think "If I could just stick it in the press" well now the press is portable. I may have to make one of my own, I found some heavy plate at work;);)

That looks nice Jim, nice job! I am still undecided here. The painting does not bother me I just kinda want it up higher anyway for ground clearance.

Hey Gdavis, I have seen many many people use spacers or washers to push the gear box out without problem. On the other hand I have seen a few rare reports or shimmy and vibration in the steering caused (allegedly) by the center link being off center and the drag link and pitman arm not being straight when driving straight. I am no expert on steering though that is just what I read on a couple threads here. I just decided that is the way GM did it in '68 on so I did it their way. Assuming I would eliminate the chance of having issues with it once the truck was assembled and driving then having to do this after causing me a big headache. Your truck is looking great buddy!

While I'm on here: mini update

Motor mount stands on and some sunlight on the shiny tractor paint:metal:
