I finished painting the steering column (no more orange column, yahoo!) after I repacked the upper bearing. After doing some research on the shift indicator that I have, it looks as if someone changed out the '68 column with a '70-'72, I don't know for sure because the harness coming out of the column is different than what it plugs into under the dash (but it still works) and the fact that it was factory orange and the rest of the trim of the truck is red. And yes, I masked off the shift indicator clear lens for the fiber optic light, it just looks like I painted over it and that's not a botched paint job, its a reflection in the paint.

Finally the day has arrived! Two separate pieces became one once again. It feels good to see your ideas, time, hard earned money and hard work all come together. At least everything from here on out is just bolt it up the way it used to be!

Magwakeenercew2jh, the fuel pump I have has one inlet and two outlets. One for the carb, which is a threaded flare fitting. And a smaller barb type, which is a vapor return line, that runs back to the fuel tank. My guess is that its part of the emissions control system. Also maybe to help reduce vapor lock?

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I was finally after over a month able to get a weather break, borrow a truck, and get help to unloadthe fender I had shipped to a body shop. 148 pounds all told the weight of the crate and fender. I hope to uncrate it in the coming weeks and then store it away for when the hardcore restoration comes.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Picked up my "new" Vortec heads from the machine shop and dropped off my new crank, rods, pistons, rings, balancer and flywheel to be balanced.
|
Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
FINALLY. I am able to pick up my new-to-me fender and store it in my garage. Once I am ready I'll uncrate and store it in the garage attic. Once the "hard" restoration begins, this may be my new spare tire fender.
I love how the seller crated if for me. NO DENTS FROM SHIPPING! :) http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...ps33168963.jpg |
Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
After about 2 years recovering from surgery, the need for the truck to be running is coming soon. I drove it around a few times but the trans was slipping, shifting hard. I found a place that will switch the turbo 350 with a 700r4. I was on my way down, not even out of my work's parking lot, I stopped for a second and blewie, no gears, fluid everywhere. The shop is about 30 miles away and I called my roadside assistance company, they wanted to tow it to a Chevy dealership 5 miles away because that's what's stipulated in the contract. I tried to explain the trans isn't going to be repaired, it's getting replaced and she tried to tell me they could only authorize the closest shop. I said the place I was going to was the closest place that will do the work I needed. After a couple times being put on hold they did come back with a wrecker that would take it there. They're going to do the work after hours and with luck it should be done Monday! They said the only issue will be there isn't 4 indents on the column so first won't have a slot. No biggie for now.

In the last two days I got the roof, back of the cab stripped. Started the filler work. I'm tired of sanding now.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I spent the day polishing by hand. Did the whole truck, about 3 rounds of compound and then waxed the whole thing. Used some #7 and ultimate compound. I'm really happy with it! Can't feel either of my arms though.
Here's some before and after http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo1-15.jpg http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo3-13.jpg http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo3-17.png http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo1-17.jpg http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo2-16.jpg http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo3-16.jpg http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo4-14.jpg http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo5-14.jpg During http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo2-15.jpg |

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Dackattack7 good job! The truck looks great! It also looks pretty original, I encourage you to keep it that way. Not many originals left around.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
There's a great trick RV'ers use to keep that shined up original paint looking great : commercial floor wax ! you put it on several coats and it makes the trig look amazing , keeps the tin worms at bay too .
Once a year does it . Your rig looks very nice now . |

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Thanks everyone. Yea I'm definitely in to the original look, here's how it looked when I got it. I've been putting it back to original. You can't really see in the pictures, but it has 8 screws in the door where a sign or something was, there's some kind of antitheft system that has an extra door lock on the driver side. I haven't even pulled the doorpanel to see whats up, but a wire goes in to the door panel. The seat has been recovered at some point, the engine isn't original, the paint on the roof is brushed on house paint and the box for the bedside toolbox is replaced by an aux tank. So, it's not as original as I would like, but overall I like it!

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I had to work both days; the old boy has been parked around the corner for a couple of weeks without being driven. I have a '68 Skylark California GS. I bought a donor car to bring it back to stock over a month ago, and I haven't had time to work on that either. In the last three months, I've had one weekend "free", most of which time ended up being "honey-dos". Good thing the old boy runs well. I was going to at least drive it today to slosh the fluids around, but didn't get to it.:waah:

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Saturday I started my Vintage Air Frontrunner swap. Proceeded to break a tap inside the block :cuss: Had to spend a good portion of my Sunday afternoon grinding away with very little progress. Spent the rest of the afternoon doing research and buying tools to get the bugger out. Now I'm waiting until they show up so I can move on...

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Hope to finish up the cab work this season -- not a lot of time, but it's just about done. Last few days (the first of the season), I picked up were I left off last fall with the trimmed drip rail.
Next will be settling on a trick design that looks somewhat period-correct for the interior. Got a set of '65 corvair buckets to replace the bench. I'll design around that to start at least... one I figure out how I'll actually mount them. Should be a fun spring summer with the truck! |

Exhaust, now welded and installed. Sounds great.
Put trans fluid in it, and it actually moved under its own power! Found out I do need to fiddle a bit more, it moves, but likes to bog down and stall out in gear. http://youtu.be/fzD0r9hE740 Thats my buddy acting goofy. I was having a beer break since it was his turn to weld. |

Kept going on finishing up the engine install after a total overhaul. Replaced all the rad and heater hoses, new carb, new lokar throttle cable and pedal, new fuel lines, triple checked everything. Have to rewire the engine harness for HEI and hopefully fire it up soon.
