Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
So Saturday morning, I started early.
Insomnia and body aches have their merits. Cut back the hedge as reported before. Alarm set for 09.20 to remind me to lock up and head out to @Johnnybravo to check out his new machine shop and collect the mixer he had offered me. 35 minute unencumbered drive was the longest drive I have done in 8 weeks, and showed just what a pleasant and comfortable drive this Galaxy offers. Johnnybravo getting on with the whole social distance thing after the House Elf helped him move the mixer from his Berlingo van to the Galaxy, leaving me to capture the load on film. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psxfazwarg.jpg Along with the machine came a new replacement fan and cover for the electric motor, part of the “Needs some attention” message, needed some modifying to get to fit. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pskhd0mbac.jpg Had a restricted visit and shop tour with JB and the House Elf, who is both better looking and nicer (not yet jaded by life sucking) than his dad would admit ;-) Amazing how much efficiency they have managed to bring to the shop through sensible planning and layout, with the Mezzanine level adding another 60% of useable space for machines and of course automotive storage. Being that they are working alone, against the proverbial clock, we kept it shorter than usual, and I missed out on a coffee and cookies, so after leaving a case of Bud Lights, I headed home where work was not doing itself. Back home, I carried on with cleaning and clearing up the hedge that I had cut back earlier. Sally popped over by about 11.30 to help me unload the mixer and plant some sunflowers and green beans she had grown. So first view of the mixer was not exactly encouraging. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3wu2rc6u.jpg After coffee and cookies with Sally, I started to look at the mixer barrel, and decided that a bucket of gravel and some water would be the way to go. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psjxac30sm.jpg Messy cement and dismissive use in its previous life as a hire company (that had gone bankrupt) evident around. Note exposed motor axle on left, that would be needing some attention. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psip0gp0ab.jpg The stand again, showed dismissive use in the past, with cleaning not a priority, ever. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psjldnyl6x.jpg Two hours of running it in various ways with changing content left me with the drum inside looking a lot better. Lump hammer had to be pulled into service to break out a load of real thick concrete in the bottom nd around the paddles. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psqfufnm4d.jpg At one point when it became obvious that the stones were not progressing, I added some sharp metal edges and chain, which seemed to help, along with the the lump hammer. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psqfjh81zp.jpg And a sobering last thought at this point. The cost of a new mixer online means the three or more hours it may take to get the machine back to where it will be an asset here when I start mixing and building is time well spent. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pswgftza97.png . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Sally is a bit of a menace with her camera, but sometimes it does make me chuckle
Sunday early. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pspw7vgiqr.jpg Back to random little jobs that steal time. Fitting the new cooling fan to the motor. I started by carefully filing out the inside to get it to slide onto the axle, fail. So measuring the axle showed 16mm and fan15mm so one of the old large drills I saved years ago was ground down to 13mm to fit the chuck on the pillar drill. Hey Presto ! Hammer persuasion. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psvtewmluj.jpg Cover on, tested, all good. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pssyhygvz5.jpg Sally had been bugging me for weeks to strip back and paint the BBQ table made from the garden gate last year. Unfortunately all the layers of paint and varnish had started peeling badly, having stood outside in all weathers. So I told her she could sort it out. Carried the table onto the lawn, gave her a steel brush and some fence paint...... https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psu7gf2ryg.jpg Result. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psavxvra4s.jpg Another Sally generated job, the BBQ I built 9 years ago has started to show its age. https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...ies-build-kent So the plan was to strip back just the tiles on the work surface..... Ooooppps.... mistake. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psejfgvjxu.jpg Suddenly the wood frames looked rubbish, so I tore apart what was built not to be replaced. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psdbf2jpxn.jpg Managed to get repair sections in. Ideally would have loved some resilient marble or synthetic all weather replacement material in place of the tiles, but will get that figured later. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3pijqiar.jpg Now the doors were clearly looking rubbish. Guess they need replacing too. Took them off. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psxfuzgoaw.jpg Repurposed and cut down to become floors to holes, will keep kindling etc dry. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pscgx8nubj.jpg Busy week ahead, though it’s Wednesday morning already So not much will happen with dy job stuff getting in the way. Doors to make up next, once I find some wood to use. . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Another Sunday afternoon job was to address more of the wear and tear from abuse to the mixer.
A bit of grinder and welding action resulted in what will hopefully be an extended life. Both the paddles in the barrel showed holes where the welds had torn away over time, and obviously leaked out when mixing cement. Started by cleaning them up and cutting patches to weld over https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psuxwmnqoe.jpg The rolled rim was broken and barrel torn and one could see the metal was worn thinner around the edge. So I took a 6” nail and bent it, cut a 50mm length off the top, including the head to slide into the rolled rim. The nails head would partly fill the gap and allow me to bridge the tear. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psshr7xa5e.jpg Aligned and kept in place with my extra fingers. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3hajsxtp.jpg Gluing metal. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psetn0jolh.jpg Camera menace https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pst2swpo2u.jpg Barrel patches. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psrf5qhmlo.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psz4mswg2t.jpg Rim. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pscd0x1gqf.jpg And finally late afternoon, just because I am like that, I took a belt sander and ran the mixer and sander in different directions to clean up the barrel a bit more. Then added some random Dulux paint I bought unidentified years ago for £1.00 for a litre tin . https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pscwgpandc.jpg Ready for work once all the prep is done and materials ordered in. . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

For the garden and nature lovers out there.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
So back to corona maintenance fitted inbetween meetings about meetings and tests about tests.
After starting on the BBQ refurbishment, it was all downhill. New door frames and doors because the old ones just looked, well, old. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psd7cdf2b0.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psrawbqjcq.jpg Next up was using the stored wood from the deck rebuild last year to make up some new doors. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psxidhfzsx.jpg While doing all these little bits of work between doing my day job, other bits happened. @PaulY dropped off a Chevy C10 cab lifter for Martin on his way to a business meeting local to where I live. While he was at it, he dropped off a few chainsaw chains for me as the chainsaw they used to fit had been stolen in a burglary. It was so surreal having my mate stop on the driveway, drop off the stuff like a dead body and drive off because of this whole Corona virus thing. I felt wounded. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psnuqmokmx.jpg Sally texted a pic too, she was at her home and painted the chairs SawdustSteve had brought last year. Ready for summer. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pswcthqgcp.jpg Typical sally, who seems to find me all sorts of jobs around here....... Comment on the pic of the new door frames was “You need to clean the brickwork” https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pstsfv0ing.jpg So pressure cleaner came up from the garage. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0kbm2iuy.jpg After https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1xfrmi6p.jpg Then pressure cleaned the recycled decking doors. Makes a big difference. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4bzskvgx.jpg And my painter..... working remotely. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psppfjaxxd.jpg Turned into a lot more work than anticipated. . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Doors completed and on.
Something missing it seems. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1xfrmi6p.jpg Selection. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psnqnp6nyz.jpg Paint. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7runolt7.jpg Nuts, bolts, weld. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5fqfk1qx.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pskkx14nmj.jpg Fitted..... Swivel locks, handles. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psdfisoqpl.jpg And poo..... Swivels fitted too close to the edge, no entry. Reset, fixed. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psb7rgjqtn.jpg At last. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5yuelz7a.jpg And then the weather turned, perfect timing. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psjmgjnjed.jpg . |

Here’s some more tiredness. So day three of my weekend started with sally at my door by 08.00 Ready to get walking to the Thames river as low tide was 07.10 We did the walk, collected a few bits of driftwood, glass, and other stuff.. Loads of WW2 bunkers around this area https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psbzhhfosl.jpg Too big a log https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psatupoknf.jpg And even bigger https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psywpppvus.jpg Sally also found a somewhat smashed iPhone 6S on the beach. We brought it home, I put it on charge (She is an Android girl) and then turned it on, locked of course. Around 8pm it rang, calling from London, the owners dad, was prepared to pay me for it, of course I said not a chance and told him I could post it or they could collect. So I wrapped it in a shopping bag and left it behind a potplant, when we got home late Monday afternoon, the phone was gone, replaced by some Lithuanian chocolates and a hand written note. Dipstick https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pstggkcdvm.jpg The rest of her treasures. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pssegkmjs7.jpg Back to her place where I refelted her shed roof. Unfortunately its spine is damaged and warped. So the job looks untidy, but it will keep the weather out. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3zultqrh.jpg Really awkward job, wrong ladder, too much reach etc. But done. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psbu4n8kzy.jpg In the mean time, later on, Dennis had pressure cleaned his gas station as well, and invited me for a drink. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psr7xbn9zt.jpg . |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
So the last job on the BBQ refurb, was the job that started it all.
Lay out, plan, measure..... https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pshimmvjmn.jpg Cut ! https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pspnlsuhzu.jpg Mix a strong cement and fine sand mix. Prep https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psdy7bytki.jpg I also wrapped the wood in klingfilm..... https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pscifzjgmz.jpg Last job left for later today is to scrub cement stains off tiles, polish them and leave them alone after that. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psbm0pya6j.jpg Yesterday morning Mickey brought around a lifesaving tool. Well, hopefully back saving. For tearing down the wall at the garage. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psoqjexuuf.jpg Sunny outside again today. More hedges to cut inbetween other prep jobs. They look lovely when cut and tidy, but man I do hate doing it all, and I tend to do Mickeys as well, 8 foot tall from his side as his property is lower than mine. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psuedh0j7a.jpg . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
So Friday my day was filled with meetings and web based work from 09.00 to 17.00
I had ordered two tons of sharp sand, 6 x 25kg bags of cement, 4 x Maxi bags of 20mm Shingle and a pallet of 100mm dense concrete building blocks My biggest concern was managing the delivery, as I wanted to get the bags put on pallets so that I could move them down to the bottom of the garden from the sidewalk where the delivery lands. At 08.15 the hijab truck stopped outside in the street. By 08.30 he drove off, having delivered. Mickey helped me with a wooden pallet rested on some 100mm beams for the building blocks as they do not come on a pallet...... Nd I really did not want to have to wheel them all down little by little on the wheelbarrow. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psz1qk235a.jpg Bloody heavy at over a ton, pulling uphill on the drive out front. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psdpakuokh.jpg My £5.00 pallet truck bought years ago as the scrap recyclers, came in bloody handy. All pulled through to the back of the house. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psunnhe2ns.jpg Next move would be downhill, to the garage where they would be used. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psihjhoom9.jpg During lunchtime, between webconferences I got the precarious loads up on the pallet truck and carefully got them down the slope to the garage. I was pooping myself that the loads would end up off the concrete strips and spread on the lawn. After doing the bags of sand lith cement and stone on top, on my own, the blocks bottomed out and I needed to call Mickey over to help me shove and guide the blocks down the path. Dece[timely heavy and too heavy as loaded. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psccszl4rm.jpg And all done. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psqxgwm3dg.jpg Weekend ahead will be garden, yard work and a lot of preparation for making foundations, and also relaying a meter of paving. . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Amazing, how time flies.
Especially when you are busy doing stuff. A lot of what I am doing in preparation for building this 6m Meter by 6 meter carport in front of the garage is appearing from the left field. Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
With a house and lot, there is always something to be done. I have been neglecting a few issues around my house, but last weekend we got a couple accomplished.
During this COVID time, I have been working like normal as we are an essential company. Well, yesterday it if finally hitting home about lost work. We were informed that we will ALL have to go through a total of 2 weeks of furlough. So now I am planning what work has been neglected at my house and farm that I can take care of with little or no money out of my pocket as I will have to loose a total of 2 weeks of pay over the next couple months. I have the time off of work, but no pay so I have to get some things done. Your pictures have been a motivator for me to put some work time into my own place. Thanks for that! |

So next job, done on Thursday, between meetings and customers.
Oh, and helping Mickey. He loves a fire. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0qt4vezn.jpg Windy outside, but I decided to start the long overdue refelting of the roof. Having added that little piece out front changed, the dynamic of the job, plus making it a bit more awkward to reach onto the roof with the flat head nails. This piece of felt landed on the floor three times before I threw a length of Used decking on it to keep it in place till I got the first few nails in. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psngdloebr.jpg When I had the shed built, I specified it to be made two lengths of shiplap taller than standard, in order for me to be comfortable doing woodwork in there. Add a concrete plinth and it gets taller. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5jfzrmqy.jpg Used a ladder to get on top, and of course when I had done the last sheet, my back refused to let me get back on the ladder.... Managed to after a bit. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psxi3gnkah.jpg And finally, done. Well, almost, as I need to remove the wall down the right side wall which has collapsed over time. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psu9vspuki.jpg When I got back up at the house, there was a knock on the door and Mickeys wife dropped off two packages, one for me. It’s full speed now for Dennis and his NASCAR truck build.
With the bedside panels and tailgate fitted, more fettling followed. Tailgate fitted. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psrzuu6pyr.jpg With the amount of power that’s going to be put through the rear end, Dennis decided to add the rear spoiler to add to downforce and also stability. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psyxcnx5fa.jpg Adjustable supports to fine tune downforce to suit different race tracks. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psu6uruj4k.jpg Lovely https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psdhnpm4ez.jpg Smaller units above the closing chains. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psgsbvedre.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pszlpmpt3s.jpg Rear will get closed in for aerodynamics and also looks. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psk9cakh0g.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psmucetq5p.jpg Next job up for today is to go buy some new plugs. You may ask why would you need power inside the truck. Maybe I will leave that for you guys to answer......... https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5ya0nnpu.jpg Pretty obvious ehh. . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Any carport builders out there ?
So for the clever engineering and applied geometry types out there. I am sure this is not a difficult thing, and if you add in CAD then even easier. Right....... I will try explain and hope it makes abstract sense to some of you. Simply put, I want to build an approximately 5 meter Long by 6 meter Wide carport, in front of and to the right of my existing garage. Part of the 5 meter “depth” has to overhang the existing garage door without impairing its opening Then........ I have a woodwork shed, built on a 200mm high plinth, and also slightly taller than average where the 5 meter side, away from the garage wall, needs to overhang the shed roof, while allowing a sloping drop off for rain and melting snow that tapers from the entrance side. It also faces into the majority of our wind and rain direction at that low end. I want the 6 meter wide front end and entrance span to be as non intrusive as possible, so uprights need to be against the sides of the overall area. Which means a potential upright support pillar at 4 meters against the garage front gable wall between the doors, leaving as much as a meter overhanging at about 2.6 meter or 8’6” off the floor and supported from an upright post with cantilevered support outward. Make any sense yet? Right. The rear post, next to the woodwork shed is near 5 meters from the garage rear corner, but needs to still overhang the shed to create the 6 meter width that I am looking to create. Out at the front of the carport, the 4th upright pillar is going to be about where the brick red colour wall is at the moment, that wall plus the grey wall are all coming down and the wall is getting rebuilt about where the red wall is now, including post no 4 the front one, which is at 6 meters from the garage. I am happy with a short lifespan roofing solution of ply and glued down felt roofing which one would hope will make 8 years before needing replacement. So...... How do I address the weird geometry on two planes as well as ensuring the energy/mass transfer is done sensibly? Amateur plan drawing. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psky4pnd1l.jpg Idea of where the posts would go, showing offset and set back. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pseperslu1.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psam3kv5mu.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9s9ngw4w.jpg Let the fun begin. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
I would be worried about the overhang by the garage door and the one corner by the shed. Most carports I know where there is wind, the posts are at the extreme corners to not allow flexing from the wind. You just planning a flat roof I assume, which makes the possibility of flex and wind sailing a bit more.

I agree. Flexing could result in energy transfer where you don’t want it. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
I agree with Bill, I would eliminate the cantilever overhang stopping it just before the garage door, if it is not a must have...

Russians....

Getting the paving corrected as part of this carport build is necessary
The camera loses some of the damage perception but a plank gives you the idea at least. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psqmpckl4r.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8po5jfir.jpg While out at at the shops and in the scrapyard on Saturday, Mate PaulF whose hydraulic press I used for the Chevy Blazer suspension parts and whose brake line making kit I got to use to make up the C10’s new brake lines And I were chatting on Messenger Video, as you do, when he asked me what job was next, so I mentioned that the paving, posted above here, has to be repaired and the base compacted and redone. “Do you have a whacker plate or compactor ?” He asked, of. Course I did not, so he offered to go fetch his from a friend who had used it and deliver it to my place in an hour or two. Plus have a coffee and a chat. Bargain !! Couple of hours later a Nissan Cube reversed down my drive. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...pshnfak55v.jpg Giving birth to this handy tool. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psymzrshvr.jpg The weather turned in the afternoon which stopped play, but a good weekend in all. Saturday evening sunset. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psp0vp6cxq.jpg Sunday rolled in and I had planned to get started on lifting the paving and repairing the subsidence Facebook said it was 6 years since the last MOT on the C10 https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psk04on1tt.jpg But Sally who came over by 08.00 had other ideas as the weather still sucked. Also, I had managed to get a second short term lodger, a welder on a maintenance contract at a local power station. So it may just be 7 weeks or less, but cash ion the bank is cash in the bank. So Sally insisted I clear out some space for the new guy. She also has a new lodger, which will help fill the hole her cars engine blowing up had made in her savings. So it seems I was stuck indoors all day. Found some food from 2009 and more recently. Not impressed with Sally Poking the Bear. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psdsusvhcs.jpg Chatting with Craig at one point, he was photobombed by Lilly. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psvnzdxomj.jpg Back to cleaning the house, every surface, flor etc washed and cleaned. Sally is a menace with a camera. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...psr2mfmnvf.jpg Eventually got it all wrapped up, and to be honest, I am pleased, and thankful for all the help she gave me too. Hope to find time over the next weekend to sort the paving if the weather plays along. |

There is an old traditional saying: “Never drink with a Russian unless you are a Russian”
Last night, through the wonders of Whatsapp and technology, I joined Vladimir and friends Oleg and Yelena in Olegs garage for a drink or two. Vodka, Beer and Bacardi flowed for over an hour. Between our broken Russian , English and Google Translate, we had a good visit. As we know, if you have no photos, it did not happen. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pstjpqmxeb.png Yelena was hostess, pouring vodka and matching the guys all the way. Charming lady and mother of Olegs three daughters. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psmyotbrtc.png Following my previous visits with Vieux and guided tours of his shop and his neighbors shops, I would absolutely recommend you reach out to him via PM to exchange numbers and have a chat or text conversation. Whatsapp is free after all. это отличный способ поделиться нашими культурами и интересами. спасибо владимир |
