Well did you ever get you phone figured out.. LOL ???

Re: Daverods project 66

I did.:metal: The phone is just a POS.:waah: Good thing I kept my old phone I'll just use it. The only thing I could post would be the empty space where I rip out all my air stuff for my 52. My carrier bearing in my 64 took a poop. Ordered a biggier better badder one fron cpp. Sounded like my engine blew up when it when out. I was only 100 yrds from home so I just drive it.

I order the new billet carrier from CPP. My OEM carrier did'nt last 2 years. The top of the carrier just seperated from the bracket. Guess I could have welded it back on. What a $hitty design.

Re: Daverods project 66

I hate it when stuff is cheaply made and doesn't last. I made a junk yard run to the Jalopy jungle for the youngest daughters 94 GMC .
Just looking for the plastic interior dash and better trim pieces for the dash. Every plastic dash and glove box and fuse door cover are all broken in the same spot.
Plastic junk!
I have a whole new appreciation for the 64 with a steel dash and no plastic.

it whont be long untill 3D printing is going to break though and you can make youre own plastic parts

daverod 01-16-2012 03:43 PM

Re: Daverods project 66

it's even worse when the guy pressing on the bearing tells you the one you brought him to press on is a cheap one and his guy has a hd bearing for 100. Funny thing is it looked just the same as the 30 one I bought. Live and learn.

Re: Daverods project 66

Put my new bearing on. Noticed that on one of the driveshafts the yolk on the end was'nt welded on to match the yolk on the other end. It was off by 15 20 degrees? That is'nt normal is it? I guess I should get it fixed. I just don't know if it's really wrong.

Re: Daverods project 66

Worth bring the driveshaft to a Driveshaft Specialist. ;)

watahyahknow 02-02-2012 01:33 PM

Re: Daverods project 66

ask de specialist first theres something rattling in the back of my mind about them needing to be offcenter so they dont lock up but i think it was 45 degrees

So I'm OK.:uhmk: It was a driveline guy that pointed it out to me? It still feels kinda weird. I think I'll turn it 180 to see if that helps.:smoke:

Re: Daverods project 66

I bet I could buy a new old one for less that it cost to have the guy cut the end off and even it out.:ito:

if you turn it 180, it will be the same thing, just traded sides
that is just like; if a bear was coming at you. would you run in the opposite direction?

not much to it . just put it in the lathe, clean the weld , part it until you hit the shoulder- turn it and weld it. you will be about 1/8 of an inch shorter.
it is easy for me to say as I have lathes

I saw on spike tv show muscle car where tommy shortened a drive shaft. He cut the welds and poped the end off and cut it then cleaned everything up and lined it back up with a mark he made before cutting and then welded the end back on trying to space 4 welds in the 10, 2, 4, 8 oclock postions. I dont think he rebalanced it.

Why take the chance of ruining your U-joints? You might not feel the vibration, and it can still be out of balance. It has to be in faze also then balanced.

easy solution then is to check get the balance checked first.
on the other hand how long has the d/shaft been that way. if it has been that way for years and worked ok, why worry about it

I turned it 180 degee's. If anything its worse. The only time I feel it is on the hiway. It's been that way since I've had the truck. I've always felt a slight wobble at above 65. Guess I'll wait till the next snow storm and go get the end fixed and get it balanced. :smoke:I would like to start hitting the hiways more.:metal: I don't run from bears they run from me.:sumo: He was a bad dog even when he was a puppy.
