Looks great! Can't wait to see all them freaky-scary wiring shots that go with these swaps

Thanks guys! Actually, the wiring doesn't seem too scary at all (if I could rememeber how to wire a relay, and where the hell I left the e-fan harness, and where the hell did the fuse holder go....). Just some batt+ and ign+ and the kicker for the starter, then to both fan relays and the fuel pump. Not too bad.

Got some new dipsticks last night (don't ask) and the o-rings for the steam line. Got the steam line installed, got the power strip installed, the fuse holder and the relay rack modded, and a bunch of head scratching done. Hopefully makin' tracks.

I can't remember but did you say you were modifying the harness? Or did you have someone re do it? Oh yeah, I had hell with my dipstick, I believe it's not correct for my LS1 exhaust, what dipstick part number did you buy? thanks

Thanks to all for the support!

Mike, I just snagged a couple of actual sticks out of some trucks at the salvage. Had some technical difficulties shortening the old one for the pan. Haven't even fitted the tube yet, hope it fits!

I had 150tunes do the harness and computer. There's some stuff I'd change, but not a bad job. I just hope it starts.

Wish we had more later model engines at our local pick and pull salvages. Unless you get there the first few days, they will be picked clean.
Good luck with the first start up.

Pics of your relay and fuse center please.
If I hadnt have just jumped in with both feet into the LS swap world, I would have felt a little wierd hearing you grabbing some dipsticks and an o ring for your steam pipe!

Ok.... Big black is under the knife. Got Home and Yaay, my stuff came from Summit. So, Boppa and I got crackin'.

Got the relay mounts and the fuse holder/fuse block holder tidied up painted and ready to install.
Got the fan harness and relays found, clipped in, and ready to wire in.
Got the battery box bolted in final.
Got the exhaust manifolds installed.
Got the dipstick tube installed.
Got a call from Eric and got a couple questions answered.
Got the Tac module and the block off plate for the AC painted in BC/CC.
Got the mandrel u-bend cut and made drops for the exhaust from 2.5" tubing. Have to trim them and check the driver's o2 placement and finish weld that bung tonight, then install the drops and o2 sensors.

Finally quit 'cause it was too late to hack metal in the 'hood. Hoping to finish the exhaust and get some of the wiring stuff in place tonight.

Thanks to all for the support!

Just a quick aside, since you don't have any love for LBT anymore, how about sending him down here to a warmer climate? I think I can spare the room. It has to be pretty tough being the orphan and all.

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!

Can't love on him-he's not here! He's at Boppa's house on bass boat and Brush haulin' duty. Besides, I'd love to make him into what you already have! We miss him, though. It'll be good to have him home.

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!

Slow night-

Eric came over and gave me a tutorial on the relays and what not- very much appreciated. We dry bumped the fuel pump- it's alive.

Managed to fit up the downtubes and get them trimmed. Got busy with Family stuff after that. Hoping to have a big go at it this weekend.

Low Elco 08-24-2014 11:45 PM

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!

Well, it's 10 on Sunday night, and it's been a long, hot weekend. But profitable. I have to thank Eric for his endless patience and assistance in this project.

So, we busted a lot of work out and it's Sunday and I'm talking to Eric and we decide to have him come over before he starts blocking his project. I just wanted someone experienced to check it all over before the first fire up.

A good tip: On an LS, the first fire of a dry engine is tough 'cuz you can't just run the oil pump the old way. Here's the drill- pull the plugs and hook up your big electric lines to the starter and touch off the purple excite wire. Watch the gauge pump up as the motor whirls like a dervish under no load. Like a champ!

So Eric comes over and despite his hatred of butt connectors ( I suck at soldering) says it looks good, let's fire it off. He brought his Tech 2 scanner and his fuel pressure gauge as well. We get all excited, hit the key annnnd..... nuthin. Well, this sucks. We mess with it for an hour, including a run home for a known good computer, nuthin. We (Eric) finally find the culprit in a ground on the low drivers side that got wrapped up in the main harness that a certain idiot (guess who) didn't see. Screwed that sucker down and VOILA! Best part, we fired it up with 2.5" dumps out of the headers and scared the CRAP out of the kids, who weren't paying attention. Here's the vid-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHqPo2ai7uw

Then, Eric says to let it run a bit and noticed we have no fuel pressure. One of my butt connectors had gotten pulled apart in the computer mayhem. Hooked 'er back up, were doin' business! Then Eric and I sorted the A/C lines (the directions are garbage, and I have no friggin' clue) and got everything trimmed up to send to Vic to weld up the lines. Then he had to go home to block sand primer in the heat.

Ok, now we just gotta put a truck back together. Hell, we can do this! So we thrashed for a few hours and did the full brake bleed, inner fenders ,exhaust, cooling system, air intake, shifter, and back on the ground. Back out of the garage under its own power for the first time in three months. Vid of that too-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6HEFMzsU7A

Still lots to do, but hey, the skeery part's outta the way and I just gotta pop it all back together. Thanks to all for all the support and help.
