Hi Jim,

This event has the atmosphere of going to your best buddy's shop. Guys freely share their tools and everyone treats them with respect. A number of guys bring in their welders, e-wheels, and other shaping equipment for use by themselves and others.

Experienced folks help teach less experienced folks. For example, one experienced participant impromptu started teaching a number of new folks how to stump shrink. There are group projects and individual projects. People give and get help.

Lots of free time in the shop with seminars by metal shaping professionals sprinkled in makes for a great few days. It is really hands on.

It's pretty cool 99...small town, nice event, great people, interesting and useful tools. Oh, and we are learning too......and a lotta bench racing / building going on.

It is pretty fun, lotta volunteer work by a lot of people. Planned seminars and small group "hey, how do you do this?" sessions by experts, tools, projects and great people. Even had a bit of time to work on the 'Burb.

68 Four on the Floor - You could attend next years event October 13 - 17 in Oblong.

We had a great time, spent last Saturday night and Sunday breaking down and hauling projects, tools and equipment out of the buildings. Our last load went into our shop about 3 PM Sunday and we were done in.

Not much progress to show for all the time we were there. An anonymous metal shaping buddy made a replacement patch for the rusted area on the window opening. Thank you! I only made a couple of slip rolled pieces I plan to put to use next week end.

This week end was putting our tools and equipment away and setting the 'Burb back on the body cart. Hard to be in the shop with the amazing weather we are having for this part of the country...so we took a little cruise in the '56.

congrats on the show and getting the burb back in your shop. a cruise is definitely gonna a rare thing soon. We also had great weather but...... its suppose to get like 75 and snow in the same week, eeek not looking forward to that.

99 - Did it snow? Cold enough here this morning we turned the heat on in the shop for the first time.

Jim - I was telling her to "punch it" and she finally did. Actually first time she drove the '56.

For the rear floor wheel tub I had this idea in mind and I had to build it. Kind of an obsession.

Don't like the look as there isn't a square piece on this truck anywhere. The raised floor and square edge tubs don't match the rest of the vehicle.

So that floor has to go. Just a couple dozen plug welds to drill out.

Rather take the time now to do it so I am happy with it.....gonna keep this 'Burb a long time.

Will make use of the original tubs and bring them in 3 1/2" which will allow the widest wheel / tire that will fit without rubbing the parallel four bar.

The tubs needed a bit of trimming on the bottom and the left one needed the flanged edge reinstalled. Was pursuing another idea and drilled the spot weld out to remove the flange. Simple reinstall with some rosette welds (correct term?) then using a bar of copper to back the holes up for welding closed.

Great day and first full day we've had in the shop in several weeks.

I like the changes. I agree, that the modified OE fenders will look more uniform. It is more work but I bet you like the outcome more.

man that looks killer, both ways looked good but your going above and beyond to keep that aesthetic looking proper. Sux you had to back track, I hate backtracking. but its worth it most times. I really dig that drill "slugger" lol never seen one like that.

rosette weld, yah fancy name for a plug weld.

Thanks Marc, it is a bit more work and the end result will be way better. Looking forward to updates on your 'Burb. Iceburgh is probably been out cruising in his by now!

Thanks 99, yeah sometimes I go down a path that isn't right and have to back up. Will be better in the long run. The drill didn't want to magnetize very well (think due to sheet metal) so I ended up using a hand drill. Way faster.

Thanks Jim, you are a kind gentleman.

So playing around with this decided to add the filler piece to the wheel tub first. Used the sheared edge of the filler piece to scribe a line on the original tub, hand trimmed to the line and started tacking together. Forgot to take a pic with only a few tacks in place.

Did a butt weld with the edges flush, tacking every 8 inches or so to start, working slow. Anywhere the edges started to pull in and overlap, used a hammer and dolly on the weld to expand it back out and line the edges up again.

Weld, grind, sand, used a light under the wheel tub to find little gaps I missed on welding, then repeat process, using hammer and dolly to bring up the low spots for a pretty decent surface. Good enough for primer, paint, sound deadener and carpet.

Thanks guys! That side took @ 6 hours. A talented metal shaping friend estimates a foot an hour for joining, smoothing / planishing into shape. I am way slower, though he uses a TIG and that helps.

More of a challenge will be intersecting on the body side. Plan to play with that Saturday. Join direct with a flush edge, tip this edge and attach to body side...? Going for join direct to the flush edge. Wish me luck.

Bigtoe-waited for me to redo the direction we were taking the wheel tubs or....?

This was a week end with many diversions from shop time.... good diversions... with Grandson's and yard work with wife.

Left wheel tub fits well and needs a little trimming before welding. Before doing that, we will finish the right one and position both left and right the same distance to the side wall.

Right side - trimmed to scribed line, wife held in place for aligning and tacking, some hammer and dolly work for alignment and finished first pass with short stitch welds.
