Re: New project

Update , Added a peice of chromemoly to the core support and cut out the top . This allowed me to cut all the way to the main supports . Got another whopping 2" of room for a 24" radiator now . Going with and electric fan and a moroso water pump drive kit . This will allow me to ut the pump and fan in manual during the run or automatic in the pits and hang a battary charger on it and walk away .

The Luv has a subframe correct? I wonder how mych stability the core support offered to fenders and such. I guess if it starts popping windshields we'll know right.

The Luv has a fully boxed frame from front to rear with 7 crossmembers in it It is stiffer than a full size imo . I did want to brace the core support before removing it . I posted this on another forum and have guy wanting to buy the piece i cut out . Thats how many of them get hacked out .

Got a bit further today . I have to be ready for the 18th and 19th . Running IHRA in Sealy , Texas . Got the radiator mounter grill tabs welded in and valance cut and water pump installed . Going to set this up with a temp sensor and a on / off / auto set up . This way on the street it is auto matic at the track i will pull in clip the charger on it and when i get back it should be 140 with the battary cjarged . We will see . Here is wher im at , plus new generator for the charge , lights , computer ETC .

Re: New project

Just finished up the larger radiator upgrade . I think it came out good . The hood actually fits better than before . This truck was in a passengerside front wreck at one point in its life . It will idle in the garage for 15 minutes without overheating and will now cool itsself down and cycle the water pump and fan off on its own within about 10 minutes . Here are the final pics of what turned out to be a major upgrade .

Re: New project

Actually been cleaning this up . Pulled the single 14" fan and installed a single slimline 16" fan . Now it will sit and idle all day long at 165 . I am alot happier with it now . It sat in the garage in 90 air with no breeze and never got hot . Thinking i got this beat . Mostly maintaince items . Slicks were bald , paasengerside axle seal , clean up interior . Getting ready for this weekend . We will see . A buddy of mine called me a told me he had a set of slicks that "the sidewall had gone away" these have 6 passes on them . I told hime i get 200-225 out of a set and they work the best at 10% tread left . crazy crappy cell phone vid :

Re: New project

Broke #2 rod coming out of the burnout box as soon as the tires hooked . It found water and filled the oil pan . 36 passes . I beleive it was component failure , as it gave me no signs . Rev limit on the line lock 5500 . Top rev limit is set at 7300 . I was at 6100-6200 coming out of the box and BAM !

Well that sucks bad.

Re: New project

The old motor is on the stand and untouched . It had 2 noisy pistons and needed valve springs . The new motor has the same pistons down to the part # . I will probably find 2 good pistons from the wreckage and use the "new" rings with a hone and do a budget freshen up . New inserts , oil pump , valve springs . Probably wont even pull the cam on the old motor . If not finished in time i will run the S-10 on the last few races. If the top end from the "new" motor is salvagable i may try and put it on a 427 dish piston short block .

hotrod 80 07-21-2014 09:34 PM

Re: New project

Well i was wrong #1 exhaust valve dropped for sure . Piston is gone , head will need to be fixed and a rod broke the paasengerside of the block and the pan . Who knows , but machinist wants to tear it apart which is cool , but this is not his fault . It is mechanical failure . Machine work went 36 passes . A valve failed . Photo update :

My old motor is getting new rings and inserts and going back together with the newer timing chain and balancer . This will be endof season motor and i will start the 2015 season with it . Almost good to have my "W-2" motor back . I call the newer motor paycheck theif , although i won with it .

Re: New project

Thanks , old motor looked good on teardown . Pistons and cylinder walls looked good . Rings and bearings getting replaced . Also upgraded to a beehive spring and retainer . These are surposed to last longer and are lighter at the retainer end to lighten up the valvetrain . Should have the old motor back tuesday . We will see .
