Re: Camshafts..

Okay

Got the timing light out.

Initial is about 23* btdc starts fine no pinigng wants more advance actually (vac can hitint manifold)

Vac can is only adding about 7-8* at the very most.

I think im going to pull up dizzy and make it where I can adv the timing some more.

Idle is alot more tame, starts pulling faster and I went up to about 3500-4000rpm and it REALLY pulled but had a funny miss or sputter or something??

Going to give it more timing and get the adv comming in sooner (light/med spring)

Dunno if I have any oil leaks yet. (Dont think so!)

Starts alot better than the thumpr too????

Re: Camshafts..

Is the initial at 23* with or without the vac line hooked up? Careful giving it too much timing without knowing how much mechanical is built into the dizzy. The more initial you put into a motor, the more the "cam" sound will go away. What were you running for initial with the Thumper? Put 'er back down to 4* and she'll sound lumpy....just no power.

Re: Camshafts..

The timing was wacky with the thumpr too lol Idk

0 mark on the tab is about 2 O clock dot on cam gear is at 12 o clock the slot on the balancer is at about 2 o clock as well

Idk.

Ps im running igntionmans 41/375 combo with my vac can limited to 8-10* Supposed to yield 20* in the dizzy I believe

oldblue1968chevy 02-23-2012 12:11 AM

Re: Camshafts..

I think it wants more adv but the vac can is hitting the intake manifold. I was exhausted and it was dark so i quit for the nite. Im trying to move it a tooth over so I can adv it further.

I had trouble so quit im pooped lol

Re: Camshafts..

Distributor isnt stabbed in right. But it runs good.

Honestly if I had to do it again (all i went thru lol) I would've left it alone. The driveability is alot better and it pulls a little harder too. The powerband comes in sooner too which is nice.

The edelbrokes not the best in the world. When I start playin with it again in afew years i'll probably go with a holley to see what I think.

But it runs! Gotta do some more tuning, maybe re stab the distributor in so the timing is semi normal and maybe do some carb tweeking.

Idle video to come sometime soon.

Re: Camshafts..

14* initial and about 30* total (read vortecs like around 32*)

I might bump it up a little and see if it pings etc

this with with no vac adv btw

And running igntionmans 375/41 weight combo

Using a dial back light

Thanks for the video :metal: It sounds nice. What RPM are you measuring your total timing at? I set mine at right about 32* at 4000 RPM and the initial is right at 10* Thats what mine recommended and it seems to work fine. At first, I had trouble with the total timing because I didnt have a tach. I got a SnapOn timing gun that has the tach built in and it really helped. The "ear" will get you close but not good enough. Youre doing a good job, dont give up :metal:

Re: Camshafts..

Give it gas @ carb until the slot stops moving. I can read the tach and look at the balancer alone

I might bump it up a little we'll see. I wanna build a bbc or a lS motor with efi now

I'm by no means an engine builder, but I have tinkered enough with my engine and others to say that from 8* to 12* BTDC initial timing is where you oughta be... but thats just my .02 cents :uhmk: Im just waiting for a burnout video

Re: Camshafts..

It'll be a bit (a week or so probably) Ive got 4 junk tires to put on so my newish good tires i have now dont rot while im away.

Burnout on those (maybe sooner than later) Im still fiddlin' with the carb timing right now. Just got the hood on tonite!

But when I get the junker tires on i'll shred the sheetooie outa em i'll try to convince the gf to take a video

I saw the clip.... she sounds nice! Still have that slight rumpity rump idle, & I will bet you have more(useable) power with that camshaft;) When you get her all dialed in, I will be here to listen to the burnout clips:lol: crazyL

Re: Camshafts..

I think the timings dialed in. (14* initial) I may give it another degree or 2 and see what happens.

I think its running a little fat im not sure, I tried setting carb (edelbroke 1406) with a vacumn guage hooked to full manfiold vacumn. Plugged vac adv and adj each screw back and forth till i got the highest vacumn reading..

Is that right way to do it or what?

I'll have some sort of video for you guys by this time next week(I'm leaving)

You are ok 14 up, with a 30-32 total....if you are right at 30 on the total, I would advace a degree or 2, & see if she feels better. The Edlebrock carb, is a fine relieable pc, & I am running one (till I do the fuelie swap), but I could never tune that edel as sharp as I could a Holley.....show us the burnies;) crazyL

Yall think some headers would help me performance wise?

Yeah, I might try a holley oneday

Ive read on the internet the vortec heads like around 32* or so

dznucks 02-27-2012 11:34 AM

Re: Camshafts..

With my new vortec motor, it performs best with around 32* max timing under high load, heavy accel situations, ie when vacuum advance has dropped out.

I had to increase my initial timing to 22*(and swap carbs) to get rid of an off-idle stumble. I have the 60103 cam. I think you would be good around 16* initial.

Without question. Headers are the one thing you can bolt to your engine that gives you proven performance. Even on a stock engine.

Oh... you'll be lookin' for a Holley... I guarantee it. :)

Re: Camshafts..

Weren't stock manifolds shown to be comparable to headers, only headers would be more beneficial with built engines (overall). Otherwise not much gain.

Re: Camshafts..

Dznucks, whatcha think bout the 60103. Kinda wonder what it'd be like with the 268, but i figured smaller would be better.

Gary-Steer me to some quality well price and fit our trucks headers please (brand, the ceramic?? etc) I have no idea.

 the holley

I think John needs to buy everyone a 6 pack :barn: each for consultation.

^^^ I second this. I like home brew or micro brew.

I am very happy with the 60103. I was going to go with the 268 but didnt for all the reasons mentioned in the past couple pages. I thought about the 60102 as well.

You will be happy with the 60102 as your power will be more usable at lower RPM's on the street. I added a 6 speed, will be adding 4.10 rear gears soon and this truck will be retiring soon from a DD. I wanted something that would be cool cruising, but would stomp @$$ if i wanted it to. And it does just that.
