Some will say '73,but I don't see any big change there. In '80 Ford stepped into the modern age with styling. After all,it was the 80s!!! GM did with a new front end,but it was still the same overall truck since '73. I feel GM went modern then, just more gradual since it was so much earlier. Ford kept the overall outline of the late-60s trucks (that wasn't all that different from the 61-66s) till '80. Really, ever since Ford bodies went square in '58 they made gradual transitions and kinda kept a similar shape through the years.
BTW,I always liked the 58-60s.

GREAT pics specialk my friend has 1 of these, like in the pic, he is restoring it.

My 1956 International S-120 factory 4x4 doing what it was designed to do...hauling a nice cow elk to the processor. Truck is now owned by a close friend of mine. 350 Chevy engine and a chevy truck 4spd.

The second is my 1949 Jeep while antelope hunting in Wyoming.

The military hoped this would replace the Jeep, to say they were greatly disappointed is an understatement = short-lived production

We had them in my unit, prone to tranny housing cracks with extreme use. Complicated enough we were not allowed to do more than routine maintenance at field battery level.

It’s been over four decades, but I was assigned to a Field Artillery Battery & there was some of these critters around. Thought they were going to be cool, found out different :waah:

We did not have them in our Field Communications (wire) squad, others had them in the Fire Control Observation squad, I know they did not enjoy them. Seems to me there were concerns with the Articulated section (electrical connections & possibly steering link failure…)

I've really enjoyed looking through this thread! Here's mine. It's a '65 International harvester 1 Ton. Has a Dana 70 in the front and a IH axle in the back and is currently sitting on 38.5 tires. I am slowly restoring it as I use it to haul firewood and such. Currently has a 304 V8 but I would love to have a diesel in it some day. :metal:

The rear is a RA-15. I know this is what IH put in them from the factory, but I'm not sure if they manufactured their own, or had it made by someone else. The 4.88 provide lots of oomph with the big tires, but the four speed transmission limits me to ~50 mph.

I've been following your Cummins Longhorn build. Love the compounds and look forward to seeing it finished up! :metal:

The IH Corporate RA rears are brutes. If I remember right, they manufactured their own. There is also a 4.30 pig (as well as 5.57, 6.17 and 6.72) available for them...changing gears is hardr, because the ring is RIVETED to the carrier.

That's one fine example of a Renegade! Better than factory, yet very original looking, and certainly reminiscent of all those I recall from those great old days! My best friend's first 4wd was a gold-ish green-ish '73. I remember the tires were really aggressive and called "Mud Wompers" and he liked to womp the mud . That one would probably not have made a good candidate for a restoration

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

Weren’t those Jeeps built by Rambler ? :haha:

From a former owner of a 1976 FJ-40 (350”<>350hp) a direct rival of Jeep owners for that era :sumo:

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

You are correct. American Motors bought Kaiser/Willys in 1971 and built Jeeps until Chrysler bought AMC in 1987. You are correct, I used to wheel with a lot of FJ owners back in the day. Funny thing is they had to put a Chevy engine in them to make them half decent . . . .

Ok here's my ole cj 77 258 six 3spd.1 owner came from Maryland 64,000 miles. The body must have been pretty crusty,It's all glass tub, fenders, hood, grill, windshield frame. It had been sitting for yrs Had to work the bugs out of it,redo the rear bumper and frame,Put a new top and doors on it.Been driving it everyday to work, and wherever.. http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5372e7e5.jpg

Correction: they came with Toyota’s version of a Chevrolet engine (it was a 235” six cylinder knock off; Toyo's = 258")which lead to the death of FJ-40 imports into the USA market in 78~79’.

To meet the EPA standards Toyota moved the engine temp up to a level where it destroyed the OEM engine. The thermostat was set at 235deg. The newer engines had aluminum intake manifold mated to the exhaust manifold (typical Chev six configuration). At 13,000 mi my intake manifold virtually melted through the mated chamber.

I R&R the six with a four bolt out of a 1973 Blazer, from then on it was screamer. (back-in-the-day) Off the line I fried allot of Camaro’s & Super Chickens
