Re: My 56 build
nice work.
I've been using feather-rite filler. do you know how it compares? |
Re: My 56 build
I usually beat out the rough stuff, blast, repair any holes and dents found after the blasting, smooth the previously beat areas, get things as straight as possible, epoxy primer, fill anything that still needs filling, high build primer, wet block sand and spray high build/wet sand as many coats as needed to eliminate the low spots, then epoxy one last time and store the parts till paint time. before paint, wet block sand, spray a sealer before painting. good to use the same manufacturer all the way through so there are no problems with compatability

Re: My 56 build
Ok, just curious.
Is the glazing putty a 2 part deal? Just wondering if it will sand at the same rate as the surrounding area. I've had that problem before. Waaay back the glazing putty was lacquer based and sometimes would react with the other substrates. |

Not much to show with all the bodywork. But when I’m tired of bodywork, I’ve been working on the interior. I like how the 1st handle came out with its final shape. Now to repeat the process for the other side. Last 2 pictures are plans for an additional wood accent. I plan on staining all of the wood blue to match the bed wood. First I have to plane them down to 3/8”. All the door panel and lower section of the handle will be covered in material. Planning on a rich tan (tobacco) color

Handles are done and some progress on the accent pieces. As far as bodywork goes, I’m close to getting everything back in primer

Progress pictures. Rear view mirror, visors and dash emblem are mounted. Everything is back in epoxy primer before the humidity gets bad. Still have to finish the front fenders and firewall. Once everything is black I’ll spray gray high build to block for final paint. The color change should help prevent sanding to metal.

A few more pictures in primer. Also finished the door panel wood.

Re: My 56 build
nice work. you gotta love seeing it all one colour, even if you will be sanding it.

Re: My 56 build
Very nice work! Those wood pieces are going to look killer!

Finished fab work on the center console. Should be the end of metal fab on this project. Plan on putting a charging port on the back of the console. Just some bodywork and it should be done. Even had time tonight to make the wood insert.
|
Re: My 56 build
Good idea on the charging ports. I would put in a couple, 1 hot with key on and 1 hot with key off.
|
Re: My 56 build
That's some intricate fab work on the console. The pic that shows the backside of the console really shows how much effort went into creating that panel. Nice work!

Center console just needs body work. Ended up mounting the radio from the back with a couple straps. It the opposite of how it’s supposed to be. The single din radio part is supposed to be mounted and the screen is supposed to float. I didn’t like that look. I rolled all the edges of the opening for a consistent look. I really like how I turned out. I have next week off, so I’m hoping to get the frame stripped down and painted.
|
Re: My 56 build
Looking good. I know what you mean about those screens. The advertisement photos always shows them straight on but I never like the look from the side when you can see how much it sticks out. Hope to get back to work on my console soon. Keep up the good work
|
Re: My 56 build
agreed, screen looks great this way.

Progress update. I’ve been working on final details that need to be addressed before paint. Drilled holes and mounted the door cards. Kick panels are in with speakers. Also made the wood base for the center console. My grille finally came in, so I made sure all the front end chrome would fit!

Ive been trying do figure out how to stop the hood from falling into the grille when it’s open. When I was taking apart my tailgate I decided to use the same style spring latches. Works well and won’t need a prop rod. I have about 1” + clearance to the grille. I have to do some final fitting of the hood and doors. Then everything gets pulled apart and I’m going to finish and paint the frame. Then onto the body paint :metal:

Last piece of fabrication… I think  Made a cold air intake box. I noticed when I was just idling it down the road the intake air temp was 120 with the filter so close to the exhaust. Bought the paint yesterday. A little more fit and finish and it’s coming apart to paint the frame.

Re: My 56 build
lookin fantastic.... gettin close... I can smell the paint fumes comin soon

Re: My 56 build
nice work, as usual.
Can't wait to see it in paint |
Re: My 56 build
that is a really nice execution, and even adds a little bit of ram-air in there.

Thanks guys. I’ve pulled the engine/trans back out. So I can get under the hood. I’m trying to get the hood fitted and I just shake my head at how terrible everything fit on these trucks from the factory. I’ve got 4 hours into adjusting and pulling on the hood and it’s still not right. I have to cut and weld the front of the hood on the right side to get the gap right. Lots of time trying to get everything to fit like a modern car!
|
Re: My 56 build
Did you try adjusting the metal X cross race on the underside of the hood?

Jason,
I had to do the same thing. |

I’m guessing this is how these hoods left the factory. All good now. Finally got the hood fitting pretty good. I won’t be able to get the gap between the hood and the cowl even with the function of the forward tilt hood. I need a larger gap in the center then the ends for the hood to open. Back to finishing the bodywork this weekend.

Re: My 56 build
looks good. if you're happy then it's what counts.gonna look great.
