Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knows or has an opinion on where my rear bumper comes from?? I do not think I have seen one on any other C10's so it could be off something else. I would love to replace mine with a good one. Looks like a typical aftermarket bumper… the photo below shows a factory chrome bumper on a fleet side parked next to Clem's Flatbed… Sorry for crappy pic, but it is 0635...:waah:

Today was catch up time.
Loads of little jobs got done. I started by turning up a bit of Oak to be the base for the Belisha beacon (Google it) in the shed, forgot how much I enjoy working wood. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps98d8c141.jpg Trial fit. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps88c75197.jpg Also dismantled my £5.00 petrol pump nozzle. Once again today was bootfair first, then some garage time, doing various things, but also worked on the pump.

Thanks Don, Free fire proof/retardant overalls are a good thing, I have set myself alight once before, years ago, welding upside down under a Sandmaster race car.
Thanks to mate Martin for ordering our shocks n springs from Brothers who have supplied at their April sale price. I guess for the American readers we need to put things in perspective. Just on combining shipping, we save about $110.00 to the UK. I do not remember the total price you paid, but once we have landed the parts, it comes to about $730.00 once import duty and tax is added for the parts, so about $182.00 or in English money £107.00 per corner. My trucks springs were lowered with a heat torch, so the ride is far from perfect or correct. I felt that the suspension is a safety item, so needs to be set right when I start my teardown and rebuild. |

Thanks to my buddy Martin, it seems I may have bought a "damaged in transit" new front bumper for the truck, to replace the one it wears now.
Martin bought a Tripple Chromed Premium bumper from the USA and on landing here in the UK it fell from the top of the container, resulting in the one tip being bent in about 35-40mm which means I now need to pay the price and then need to straighten it out as much as possible with a press or in a vice, appropriately protected. My existing bumper is good, as can be seen on photos, but it is not great. So I will sell it on to cover some of the cost of the risky repair. Little by little the bits are comming together. :chevy: |

Again, just to put it into perspective for the Americans on here.... most of you then?? Once we land an item it is a whole load dearer than it would be in the USA. So a $179.99 ($180.00 in my book) plus $30.00 penalty for it's size, bumper ultimately costs us closer to $500.00 once freight and import duties at 24.5% are added. Been pressure cleaning the deck, furniture and repairing and painting all the stuff.

Looking at various options to make my '66 Chevy C10 more anti social.
One option is having a pair of cutouts fitted to the headers to then selectively terrorize cats n dogs etc. These are on Evilbay, from China. Price per side with free delivery. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350803969660 My question is, has anyone used them before, what is the quality and longivity of these parts?? Tonight I am the proud (???) owner of £436.00's worth of 2 and 2-4 inch lowering joy for the truck.
Mate Martin has bought the same for his '65 Long Fleetside. The original lowering was done with an Oxy-Acetelyne torch at some point, leaving the truck a bit, well a lot, wallowy. Redneck engineering at its best with the springs unevenly bunched together. So in line with having it as a functional driver when it is done, I decided this was another item that needs doing correctly. So spent the money importing the parts. Martin needed a full set for his truck too, so when we saw the lot on sale by Brothers, we contacted the Brothers in the USA and asked about combined shipping....... the difference was $110.00 on the parts. Of course you cannot get away from Customs, but the barstewards charge their VAT on the US courier costs too, which I think is a bloody cheek. Anyway, I am happy that I have nitrous filled shocks with nylon bushes. The springs weigh a ton, and look very good. Still need to decide if I should get the springs powder coated, or just give them a coat of gloss enamel, as they are going out of site and this is a driver truck. Loads of sharing of cock ups and spares, as well as helping each other out with bits. On Sunday we have a marathon session planned with my truck and two of the motorbikes in my garage, as well as a petrol electricity generator and a Briggs and Stratton 190cc lawnmower that kicks back like a mule on its pull cord. Any ideas ?? |

Started this morning with painting the rear springs a red under coat...... what a carp job to do.
Tomorrow I will go get some red gloss enamel mixed up to paint them with, I only did the rears, as I am going to Hammerite the front ones in Black. Today I was planning on bidding on one on Ebay, but I contacted the seller to go inspect, and then typically, the day turned nasty, and I could not even get away to go look at it before bidding. I did however get a call from the seller, Mat, a Police officer to tell me a bit about him. I told him that the machine was going to make a lot more than I would be prepared to pay for it. As I wanted to use it to remove all the glue and get all the boards the same thickness...... People continue to surprise me with their kindness. During the chat, I had told Mat what I had planned to do with the machine. Next thing he suggested I load up the skirting boards and bring them over to his home about 10 miles/16km from where we live, and give it a go on the machine before it sells. Where do you still get this sort of kindness and consideration ?? So a fast decision was made, Nicola and I moved cars off the drive, loaded all the planks into the back of the truck and I "raced" over to Rochester to meet Mat, and then we got the first, followed by the other 18 planks, each one got three passes through the thicknesser. This is the result.... As a follow on to last nights report on getting all the recycled skirting boards planed and thicknessed I thought I would unpack them this morning before packing them away in their spot under my motorbike trailer which just happened to be out over the weekend delivering a bike for a friend of mate Martin's
The shortest three to the right are the exact length of the truck bed, and the width they make up is again the exact width I need. Clearly they need to be processed and cut etc when the time comes. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3a4d1f65.jpg Today was time to attack some of the trucks wiring that must have been done by a blind badger with a crooked walking stick on a night with not much moon shining. Mate martin had to return my trailer, and also wanted to join Nicola and I on our weekly bootfair trip. But of course we usually leave home between 06.00 and 06.15 as the first one is about 12 miles from home. Martin was unhooking the trailer by 06.15 and I pushed it though to the garage while he reversed his tool laden car down to the garage. By 06.25 we had a quick cuppa tea and then went to three bootfairs, getting home by 10.30 for a quick breakfast, an then down to the garage. Martin managed a nice little haul, including an unused gravity feed spray gun for his primer work @ £5.00 and a complete, unused Airbrush kit for £4.00 We each also bought two 500ml cans of red gloss enamel spray paint for our truck springs, the result below. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psb8c45497.jpg The main reason for Martin coming over was to help me identify why my passenger indicator had gone on the blink again (well, it did not blink anymore) While he was at that job, I did a load of other odd jobs in the garage. It soon became clear that the truck did not have side lights, which in the case of my truck are both in the bonnet. So after a load of testing, breaking old oxidized wires and also finding the one fitting was useless, Martin went home to take Amanda, his other half out grocery shopping etc, returning three hours later with his spare fitting to use so that we could get a bi-filament globe fitted. Unfortunately, both fittings were so buggered that he had to solder small tabs onto the bulbs so that they would make sufficient contact to be functional. After which he renewed some of the wiring which was broken. This left us at 19.30 with working indicators, side lights etc. Through the day we also solved another few problems of my and his rebuilds. Well, after Sundays fun and games with trying to get the side/park lights sorted for MOT, I decided last night that I may well be better off replacing all the wiring on the truck when I redo the body.
The wiring is an atrocious mess. This lot is the result of just making one pair of bulbs work out front by replacing the relevant wire with fresh stock. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse58e16ad.jpg This lot all has to work for MOT, and the indicators are also in the top units on the hood/bonnet. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps2759783f.jpg In the mean time, I started looking for and asking around on the USA forums for a source where I could buy one or more replacement units for the bulb holders as my mate and I both needed either new, or new used units to replace what I had on the truck. Come forward Markeb01 from Spokane Valley in Washington State who offered me a pair of his used ones, followed by a message an hour later that he had located four brand new ones in NAPA store and bought them for us. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/844/hckb.jpg So the decision has been made, after Nicola told me to do what needed to be done ;-)) to replace the complete wiring loom with a full EZ Wiring 21 loom. Just need to find the best deal to land it in my garage, as there are various ways to get a loom, either via a direct purchase off Ebay USA or getting a local agent to bring one in and sell it to you. I spoke to a local chap today and he said he would airfreight anything I needed from the USA at a direct 1:1 price, so an item costing $100.00 in the USA, he would sell to me here for £100.00 Glad I have now made the decision to go ahead and sort this out as well, you do not want your newly restored truck burning out next to the road because of some dodgy wiring. The headlight unit will become "crystal" type units at some point too. |
