Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Did you prime the oil system before dropping in the dizzy? I dont remember if you had mentioned this....
I always just dumped a splash of gas in the carb....make sure you're not staring down the carb when it turns over....(think of 4D's post with the mushroom cloud). It shouldnt take too long to get fuel flowing to the carb. Ive seen different things on the cam break in. But usually the shortest time was 15 minutes. Good luck!! |

Left the NPT plug at the back of the block a little loose and oil came flowing right out past the threads, but not loose enough to make a mess on the floor. Quote:

Hey Mac,
Don't forget the pen and paper so you can draft another creative story why you didn't get it running.....LMAO! I left this thread 2 months ago , just came back to check in and guess what? S.O.S...... Just find it hard to understand some of the reasons , "Had to Re-bend my trans-lines" (2 week delay) , "couldn't find copper line for my oil pressure gauge"..(2 Week delay) and multiple replies about kids,Dogs,Work,Weather.. and ON and ON and ON.....WTF? Quit being a lilttle Girl , Take the stupid tarp off it , put fuel in it , charge the battery and light that P.O.S. 283 up!!!! Jesus Christ I could have had that thing running in a friggen Snow Storm by now! Desert |

Hey Mac,
Can we get one of those "Mission Control" countdown clocks? Or maybe just a link off the NASA web page. So everyone can see when to tune in.... Desert |

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Don’t know what it is guys - stabbed the distributor just like I did with the Chevelle’s crate motor. Just doesn’t want to go. As I’ve stated a couple of times before - I’ve got a single weekly window of two hours on Saturday morning for this stuff, and no matter what we did, or where we moved the HEI - all it did was pop back through the carburator.
We rechecked the harmonic balancer mark with the compression reading on cylinder number one again - and it’s right where it should be (TDC). Because of other employment and family commitments on the weekends - it is what it is and I won’t be able to even look at it again until Saturday. Personally, I think it’s all the negative karma by some in this forum: Quote:

man I have been throwing all the positive karma west that I can manage...maybe it made a wrong turn at Albuquerque ;) |
Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Have you tried rotateing your plugwires clockwise 1 spot and playing with the timing?

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
in my experience, with the distributor 180* out it will try to run but will crank over slow and then fast then slow, pop and back fire through the carb, sometimes even blow fire up through the carb too.....doesn't seem to matter how many times I have swapped out distributors I inevitably get the dist 180* out....or the last one I did, I accidentally put my wires on counter-clockwise, it kinda acted the same way then too...I knew it need to be clockwise but for some reason I looked at the cap and put the wires on backwards. set it to TDC and just line up the rotor with your number one on the cap, that should get you close enough to run oh and make sure you got the firing order right ;) |

 I hope I don't have to crank the dizzy half way around though, cause that little square plug's going to be right up against the firewall. http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:...ht_squeeze.jpg |
Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
you have to pull the distr up and turn the shaft 180. just time it back to nbr 1
