yeah its a 2wd vehicle the swap is coming from.

This should help for those wanting to convert a factory harness to standalone config.

Sarge,is this a cover to access your brake master? Are you just going to screw it down for access?

And one more...What is the door latches you welded in,and what did you do to align them properly in your door when welding them in?

skymangs 06-23-2014 10:23 PM

Re: 49 ls1

Charliesheen; Yes, the access cover is for the under floor dual reservoir. I'm not screwing it down though. The 1/4" rod I welded on the underside locks it in place nicely. Door latches are bear claws. I adjusted the doors so that the wind lines and gaps were where I wanted them. Then carefully marked the "door side" of the bear claw and cut/welded them in. The striker side is adjustable, that way final tweaks can be made.

Not much photo evidence of progress on this one this week. Working on a customer truck. I'll start a thread on it when it's a little further along.

I think the most anticipated novel of the year will be when you explain how you install your power windows and locks, and in-door wiring. That, right there will be special.:metal:

Any hints or candidates for the door lock and power window equipment? A mishmash of fab and components? What have you gone with on past projects that you have found decent?( OK-I know Christmas is coming, haha, excuse the child like impatience).

Re: 49 ls1

No worries. I intend to use a "universal flat glass window riser set". Since I have Bear Claw latches, I'm going to swap them out for power bear claws.

So I finally got some '49 time today, most of the recent work hasn't been very picture-worthy. I finally got the '59 Olds seat out of the other truck and mocked it up in this one. It fits like a glove, and is surprisingly comfortable. Next week it will go off to the Upholstery shop, with some pattern sketches, to make it look more "iconic 50's"... It will be 2 tone, with maybe a 3rd color accent.

I also got the front end finished up, and bolted on. Hopefully for the last time before the cruise night and the show in August.

Here's the finished 2 tone dash, ready to start installing hardware. Colors are OD green and Almond. The Almond matches the leather wrap on my new steering wheel quite nicely. The seat will get done in matching colors.

Mark Ripley of Ripley's Old School Pinstriping in Olathe KS will do some accent striping to divide the colors a little better at the August Cruise. :metal:

Thank you, I'm really looking forward to getting it out to it's first show, even though it will be "Under Construction" still.

Spent a few minutes this evening mocking up the new 12" Lokar shifter...

Love your build Sarge, keep up the awesome work. The Lokar is perfect under your incredible dash. Will you be running carpet?

skymangs 07-15-2014 04:10 PM

Re: 49 ls1

Jim; thank you. I am pleased with how it is turning out for sure!

squirts; Thank you as well. My usual banter is that I am against fancy high end stuff, but for the interior, there wasn't any other option than a Lokar shifter, and Billet Specialties wheel. I will be laying carpet in it. I'm leaning towards Cut and sewn O.D. green, to tie everything in with the beige/OD green color combo. It will also be getting 2 tone upholstery, and custom door panels, done with a 50's flair.

Looking great! What did you use to spray your dash?

Re: 49 ls1

Dash looks great,I like the subtle color choice.Inspirational!

Did you change your mind about those dash extension pieces extending onto doors?

How'd you come up with the seat???

I like the exterior finish on the truck.More uniform than the regular "patina".Looks like a weathered river rock.

Where is the August Cruise? Are you guys coming to the Nats?

skymangs 07-16-2014 10:33 PM

Re: 49 ls1

Thank you all.

The dash is sprayed in an OD green I had a local body supply store mix up for me, and an Almond color they mixed to match the leather wrap on the steering wheel. Sprayed with a touchup gun actually...

CharlieSheen; The dash extension pieces are still going to happen, but with it's first show less than a month away, I had to make some choices on what was going to get done, and what could happen later in the winter. The seat is a '59 Olds bench from a 4-door sedan. And thanks, I'm calling the exterior look "Shabby Chic".

Low Elco; Wouldn't miss it for the world. In fact I'll have a vendors booth. Both the kids truck and my '49 (under construction) will be there along with 3 or 4 customer trucks.

I dropped my bench seat off at the upholstery shop today, and spent over an hour picking fabrics and discussing the look I want it to have. The seat pattern will be based on a '57 Studebaker Golden Hawk design, complete with double stitching, and pleated inserts. (pic 1). The colors will be OD green surround and Almond inserts. I had him order extra yards of each material, to complete the door panels, kick panels, and headliner later this winter.

I also started assembling the dash this evening. Starting to look damn good I think!

Low Elco... August cruise is in Topeka, 4pm at the Dugout, 16 Aug.

Warrensburg show (about 400 cars) is on 24 Aug

Re: 49 ls1

Very,very cool.
But now it is starting to sound like one of those build-off shows, lol.Like you have a deadline.Do you plan on having it driveable for these shows?

Man does that look awesome!!!!!!!!! I love it!

skymangs 07-17-2014 10:57 PM

Re: 49 ls1

Charliesheen; Not a build-off. The purpose of this truck is to show the engineering that went into it. It will be an "under-construction" display. While it won't be "road-worthy", I will drive it on and off the trailer, air it up and down, etc. I needed to get enough done to show the basic concept of the truck, not finish it.

Thanks BlueBomber...

Sounds like a great idea, truck should attract a lot of attention.People are usually fascinated to see things going through the process.

Thanks all.

CharlieSheen; That was kind of the plan for the last few months. Once it's finished, it looks like every other finished truck. While it's under construction, it is more interesting. ;)

Thanks Low Elco.... We'll be there, along with several of my builds, beer, brauts, you name it!:metal:

New pics for ya'll...

New body harness is in, and she's turn key now!

Next is the '50 Chevy car hood emblem I'm using. I've modified both the hood, the center hood trim, and the emblem to make them look right.

Next is the '56 Chevy truck V8 emblems that will replace the "3100" on the side of the hood.

Last pic is my new "smoked" rear glass installed. I'm going to let Mark's Mobile glass install the windshields. Just isn't worth the hassle for a hundred bucks!:waah:

Also, if anyone here has a lead on tri 5 stuff. I'm looking for '55 Chevy Belair (4 door) door panel chrome, the one that makes the big "V" like the picture below. I need a pair of front door trim to make the door panels for this truck. These have the PERFECT look to them!
