OK, that makes more sense. The perps should be pursued, for certain, in any event.

my shops in socal have replaced about 50 catalytic converters stolen from dept. vehicles in the harbor area past couple of years.. we have replaced hundreds dept. wide from theft..

CARB (california air resources board) approved OEM or aftermarket (when available) catalytic converters or exhaust assemblies as many are only sold by typically run $750 - $4000 depending on engine family, horsepower, how many cats installed, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

most of these theft removals aren't delicate so often there's other collateral damage like missing or damaged O2 sensors and harnesses, transmission and driveline damage, exhaust tubing flanges, brackets, and hangers, etc..

shop labor rates vary from $150 - $250 per hour and some systems are labor intensive to restore..

here's a few thieves left behind from mangled systems out of our vehicles.. illegal to install used cats so they'll be recycled..

I'll decline comment on prosecution of these crimes in california

My BIL owns an exhaust shop. He cannot keep up with all the converters that are being stolen. He does a lot of work for dealers. One of them brings in brand new vehicles to have him replace the factory converters with after market ones. The thieves prefer the factory ones.
The police department even got hit..It's crazy out there.

I just saw a police video on preventing cat theft. You spray them a bright color and engrave the last 8 of your VIN or your tag #. Scrappers won't want to buy those and thieves know it.

Here are a couple things I dug up in my cellar recently

A neighbor up the street woke up in the middle of the night, to a group of criminals stealing the cat from his son`s Honda in his driveway. Looked out his front window and one of the lowlifes was aiming a gun at him. Really?? He just backed away and called the cops. Of course, the theft ring left before the cops arrived and we`re off to their next car. The neighbor has guns, but obviously a cat isn`t worth a shoot out with your family in the house. Especially now in days, when criminals have more rights then law-abiding citizens and law enforcement. Don`t get me started....

This is a nice quiet neighborhood, so obviously everyone is freaked out. Can happen anywhere.

Looks like I sorta jacked the intent of this thread with my pic. One last comment from me on it. It was 1100 bucks for the cat and installation. They offered to weld in a special cage made for preventing cat thefts ... 500 extra bucks, he declined.

One of my sons has a new Chevy Canyon. I'm going to discuss the paint and engraving with him. We have the tools, already. Of course, no one has stolen the ladders that he leaves in the bed...yet.

I work for a freight delivery service. Our pick up and delivery fleet sets outside some weekend days quite often. Or I should say used to. A while back they had 10 rentals and 5 of our own trucks that had the cats cut off them all. Now they try to cram all their trucks in the warehouse every night and there is a rent a cop that is supposed to watch the place. That was an expensive weekend.

Doggie pic that I did not take! We thought he had something stuck in his throat. Vet said all is good. Possible real bad allergy to the Cottonwoods we are told.

i'm sure everyone has a pitman puller story...had to take 3/8's off the hooks and grind out the inside to fit it over my pitman. then the hook bent and the the screw hole stripped. saved by a '69 nova suspension castle nut lying in the shop, same thread pattern and held enuff to get the pitman off
Attachment 2189266

why is the pitman coming off? my new driver son was in the parking lot and forgot about the battleship turning radius and cranked the wheel full on into the stops as he kissed the curb. blew the sector shaft seal- fluid everywhere
frame is perfect, no cracks. factory steering brace and 5/16 angle crossmember are doing their job.

Good luck. That does not look like a battle you can win. ;)
