Hi everyone. I have been using the forums for a while but finally had some extra money burning a hole in my pocket and with the wife's blessing I was able to picked up this 68' :gmc2:, so I felt it only suiting to register and show what I found.

According to the VIN the truck originally had a V8 with a 3OTT but is currently powered by a 250 I6. Sadly the SPID is no longer there but guessing with the minimal options I can point out I would say it was a 307 SBC. Mechanically it is sounds. Body is mostly straight with a ding in the cab corner/door, a bend on the bed rail and only a couple spots it rusted through. Electrically there are a few gremlins but all in all its a good ole retired farm truck to get back running down the road in her former glory.

My neighbour had the flamed 68 and wanted my 71 I just bought so traded him for a Polaris Sportsman 7004x4 quad w $3,000 extras and plow. See he now has 2 trucks.

cheap a$$ white pine my 11yr old son put black stain on it then sanded most of it off then put red oak stain and cleared it i was shocked how well it turned out

That pine won't hold up to any kind of load. Poplar would be a much better cheap choice for a truck bed.

I have to disagree. If you put a polyurethane coating on there, it will be very hard and dent resistant. If he had wanted a really strong material that would stand up to "a load" he could have just put dimond plate or a plain sheet of steel. The fact that he spent time to make it shiny and pretty tells me that he's prolly not gonna drop an engine block on it or a tree trunk... In short, it's his truck and it's his choice. Who has the right to tell him he made a poor choice?

Thanks 05snopro440 but if you want a cheaper way than CLR you can just use anything with phosphoric acid. Around here it's ZEP calcium, lime and rust remover. Percentage ranges between 15-40% between batches but at under $10 a gallon (more controlled solutions of 30-40% are $25-30) it's decent. Also here in the states CLR no longer contains phosphoric acid, which helps as an inhibitor to the rusting process. I only had about an hour after work but clean the one side of the box up a bit.

He and his kid did a nice job. it looks great. just pointing out that pine is not ideal for a truck bed. Poplar is actually a traditional wood for that sort of thing. here in the north east it was used on stone boats BINTD I have seen it used on heavy equiptment trailers.
And yes I do like to poke a little fun at folks whos trucks are too shiny to use:)
I would love for my truck to be in better shape but would never want a truck so shiny that you can't use it..

Reining - That's a great truck you got there, I came close to pulling the trigger when it was for sale in Benton. I'm glad some on the forum ended up with it. If I remember correctly it had door lettering. Again cool truck and welcome

Thanks Razorbacker. It does have painted lettering on the passenger door. It was a name and address of the farm in Missouri where it was originally purchase and used. The only real history I've been able to get on the truck is that and it still bears the Westfalls dealer chrome emblem. Again thanks for the warm welcome
