Short day on the truck today. Couldn't face chasing the trans leak today, so I almost finished up the new carb install.
I've changed out umpteen carbs over the last....well, lots of years.

But today I learned two new things.

First, unrelated to the carb: Anything you leave on the battery ...like, using the top of the battery for a parts or tool holder...will get lost.
Second, if you have an addled old man's mind, always lift the hood when you are in the middle of a project before you start the truck, car, whatever.

Case in point...I was really happy the Street Demon carb change over yesterday went well. A few bumps. Nothing big. I have to clearance the air cleaner with a spacer and
make sure it doesn't slide around while I'm tightening it and "interrupt" the choke's movement. That meant a dab of epoxy after some clearancing with the Dremel. Time to dry, etc.

So, I just covered the "bare" carb with a nice T-shirt rag for the night.

I decided to do the air cleaner this morning. The garage was empty, so I jumped into the truck to move it inside and out of the pending hot sun. Fired up immediately.

Until it started "popping" when I sucked 10% of the t-shirt into the secondaries. Spent the best part of 1/2 hour bent over the carb like a monkey with a football (;) ),
pulling every thread out with screwdriver, needle nose pliers and a hemostat. Got it.

Dialed in the carb. Still checking the choke circuit 'cause it's weird to me. A choke that works by itself...Hummmm! Waiting for the spacer/air cleaner plate epoxy to set up
so I can finish measuring the 1/4-20 rod from the carb to the top of the air cleaner.

Think I'll leave it a tad long and find a little rat statue to attach to it...If I remember!

Still chasing down leaks. While I was working on the trans leaks, taking some of your suggestions, etc., I got up off of the ground and looked back at the front of the truck....Trans fluid dripping from the pass side frame horn. What?

Long story short, it is a completely separate leak from the one at the trans. The trans cooler circuit in the new Champion aluminum radiator has a bad seam. It was murder to find it...But that's where that one is.

So, instead of finger pointing with the mfg., and instead of pulling the radiator, overflow can, wiring for the pass side of the engine, electric fans, dumping coolant all over (the part that didn't get into the 5 gal container...
There always is a ton of it, no?), I decided to make sure of the source of the leak, bypass the on-board radiator trans cooler, and add a remote cooler.

For now, part of the testing process was to run sans-trans cooler, up to pressure and up to operating temperature, by simply connecting the two trans cooler hoses together.

Done. No leaks. The rest of the cooling system, including heater circuit, engine cooling, is tight, and incredibly efficient. Truck stays nice and cool at an idle...The electric fans don't even turn on until placed on the lowest setting.
I don't trust temp gauges, but the one in the dash doesn't read over 1/2 hot after a drive and a long idle.

Okay, now for a trans cooler. Any suggestions?
Ahhhh...I'll do it next week. I'm tired. And I have a life other than this truck!!!!;)

This was Sunday: Changed out my door lock tumblers only to find out the pawls were so worn/loose that they don't move the latch enough to lock it. So have those on order now.

Installed the new armrests I ordered to replace the "ohio-special-leather-strap-handles" the PO had "fabricated".

Looked longingly at my new Skip White distributor and coil and wondered when I might do that project.

I sure hope so ! .

It's for the spare so if it turns up bent it'll still work and I'll kick myself for once again neglecting to test a used wheel before inve$ting $45 in powder coating it....

I don't think it's bent, but I was worried about the rust you discovered inside the rim.

I borrowed a dead SNAP-ON Bore Scope and cleaned then repaired it and peeked in the # 2 cylinder of the 292 I bought a few months ago ~ it's stuck from sitting and I see some red splotches on the cylinder walls so that's that ~ off will come the cylinder head and bell housing , I'll borrow an engine hoist to lift it up to the engine stand , then I'll tear it down and overhaul it .

I'm still not sure I'll want to keep it once running and installed , it depends on the fuel economy I guess .

I doubt I'll have any difficulty selling a freshly overhauled 292 if I decide to keep
the current 250 engine .

Installed exhaust manifolds. Thanks for all the info guys! I got them installed last night. Decided to go without gaskets and see what the results are. Both surfaces are clean and straight so I think it should be ok. Let her run for about 30 minutes last night and didn't notice/find any leaks.

Thanks again for everyone's advice!!!

Got the bed mounted and the bedsides cut. Raised the bed 1 1/2" so the bottom of the step is even with the cab, instead of hanging lower. Not sure if now lowering the rear to the same ride height with less air in the bag will be a worse ride out back.

They look nice but that's pretty rich for my blood. She's not a race truck and I would rather spend cash elsewhere.

I would like to see how to use a straight mount, I thought they had a mounting pad at the front of the motor.

Wow thats insane! I thought shorty Chevelle headers fit? I cant believe that with all the c10's out there, nobody has anything that bolts on and tucks out of the way. I have long tube headers on mine and they hang way below the frame. I need to replace them before I bag the truck. I am looking forward to any other info you post about this. Hopefully the headman headers fit and dont hang down. I was going to order chevelle shortys but I Better hold off for now...

The Chevelle header is supposed to be the same as a Camaro, looks like they depend on the manufacturer.

Called the speed shop again and the new part numbers did not come yet, they said they would call me right back, that was three days ago. I would like to try them out but thought about going to stock manifolds and having them coated. Soaked and pulled apart my Pass side ram horn and it turns out to be 1-7/8" and the Driver's is 2", sooo that's on hold until I can try to pick up another manifold at Monroe next weekend.

Yeah,. Me, too.

What you really need jc70, is a couple of Buds to come around Vallejo (where I'm thinking it's probably pretty much cooler than the 100.8 degrees here today),
climb under with some wrenches and do some bench racing while we pull that puppy.

You have the 454 that need bearings. I have leaks.

Then again, I just found out my brother has stage IV throat cancer. Puts a lot of stuff in perspective.

Put the call out for some wrenches. If it's during the end of next week, I'm only about three and a half hours from you.
Bet there's some other folks that that are close enough and would like to get dirty and then get to go home.:two:

Just barely. My engine is mounted in the six cylinder position so it clears the engine stands by about 1/16".

Shawn, did you gloss powdercoat the air cleaner? I mostly see them (like mine) satin. I'm liking the shiny better.
