I cracked my intake manifold:cuss:, had looped the heater hoses together so that I can get the heater box out to work on restoring, but decided to put some plugs in instead. Damn if I didn't crack the intake manifold... Guess I know what I am doing this weekend.

Any recommendations for a new intake?
I believe that this is a 283, not 100% sure, but no reason to believe it is not, it also has holley 4bbl, suspect it is a 650 single pump. Want to get her back on the road ASAP. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Well nice part on the intakes is pretty much any dual plane intake is great to use today, just stay away from single plane intakes, they are for higher Rpm range, not very streetable. I generally use an Edelbrock Performer whick in your case is good from idle right up to the higher 5,000 rpm range, some more performance minded use an Performer RPM intake, still dual plane but 1,500 to 5,800 Rpm range.

I read somewhere that Bustin designed this in '60 for your hood....then left it that way for the model run..(sounds like sumthin' GMC would do ) They also designed one for the Chev's...a bit simpler in design...and a little easier to come accross. But I, like you, like the GMC one on a GMC. I have only seen one or two before....and those were pictures. I think it would be a fun winter project to build one....for a feller with the right stuff and some fab skills. I wonder what a guy could expect to sell a good quality copy of one for. If you set out to produce a 1/2 dozen at a time, you could sure do a nice job on them without spending too much on time & materials. There is no doubt that you would be better off to have a good straight template to copy. The problem with that concept is that they would appeal to very few... |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
When and why did it crack? When you were putting the plugs in or because you were putting the plug in? I was just about to plug my heater hole, was reading that other people have done it no prob. I don't want to crack my intake though! I also read that people drill a couple holes I'm the thermostat when doing this too.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
You have to chase the threads before you put the plugs in. They become corroded and filled with calcium over the years. If you don't chase them, the pressure will expand the port and crack the manifold.
I did mine and it went off without a hitch. Steven |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I was a moron at the time, and over tightened the plug. Silver lining is that I found an edelbrock performer manifold at partsource, the ink on the box was faded, must have had it in stock since they opened the store. They were glad to see it go, got it for $99.00!!

How about a few pics of the 62... I am a 62 myself (just had my 50th!!!) I hope to have my intake changed, and have my baby back on the road this weekend. Craigerrrr |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
It is a rough looking truck at the moment due to a half centry of Texas suntanning... but I will get some more pics up soon. Good luck with the intake swap and enjoy the ride!

Steve'62, if you are just putting pipe plugs in the ports where the heater hose goes on the water pump and the intake you would just use some teflon tape, or some non anaerobic thread sealant. Again, don't be a moron like me and over tighten them. They are tapered threads, the seal is actually metal to metal, the teflon tape serves as a lubricant so the threads don't gall. Cheers! I used brass countersunk hex plugs.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Use the pink teflon tape. It's stronger and handles heat better.
I tried using ptfe paste and it was a mess, squeezed out and the plugs didn't go all the way in. Steven |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
The stud welder is working great! You have to get used to the slide hammer. If it doesn't get a good bite it slips off the stud. For $99.00 you can't beat it. I priced other guns at Eastwood and other sites and they wanted $200 and up. I say go for it. I wish I would have had it a few months ago.

Removed the cracked intake, and working on installing the new edelbrock performer. Doing some clean up in the process. Called it a day so the paint can dry on some bits and pieces. Should have it all back together tomorrow. As the manifold is aluminum, I installed SS pipe plugs in the heater, temp sender, and extra vac ports. Careful not to over tighten of course:ito:
