Wish my welds looked that good. The welds around the exhaust cut out look nice. As does the frame patch.

are you going to box the frame? i normally put box older frames if i've had to cut them. i personally have never had a frame break around a repair ,but after all the horror stoies ive heard from people i decided it was a good just-in-case. i can see from the welds your more than capable. i've got a buddy that boxed a whole frame and turned the frame into an air tank for his bags. im not a big fan of bagged trucks, but his looks clean

Looks good Dan. Nice job on the repair. What is the minimum size steel to use as boxing plates?

3/16 works fine bj
Looks good Dan, did the frame move any when you cut that section out? Thats the only fear I would have taking those dimples out.

Very nice work on the repair and the cross member. You got me wondering about mine being stout enough without brace tubes?

Ive seen them done without bracing and had some serious power underhood and never had any problems mike.

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

I am a boob !! I was having shielding gas flow issue the other day not contamination. There was some buildup in my nozzle on one side so I was not getting sufficient flow when welding from right to left. Why didn't I check that ?? Duh!

Yeah I thought I better do the exhaust now while the frame is out in the open. I need to make some money too!

Yes I was planning to box it in that section, Well the whole rear if I end up doing what I want to this truck but I need more $$$

I used 3/16 (.1875) I had to use a calculator, my calipers only read decimals:lol: 3/16 is about.025"ish thicker than the frame according to my measurement.

Nope, no movement Jon, the frame is supported and I put a floor jack with a block of wood under the area while it was cut out. I was concerned as well but it measures the same now as it did before.

I dont think it is really necessary for yours. I used larger pipe and think it looks cool with a pipe welded in place. If i remember correctly yours is 4" correct? I learned from you and rocket king and someone else ;)

i know that $$$. i alway need more. i still within my $0.00 budget on mine. as far as boxing i've been using 3/16 mild steel plate for the past few years without an issue. it's thick enough for strength and thin enough to cut with a jigsaw.

Okay where was I ?? Did some more welding on the exhaust cut outs once I flipped the frame. The problem I was having welding was that my nozzle was partially clogged so once I let go of the trigger my last weld would pit on the top so I ground out the pitted top welds and went back over them. lots more pics/progress to come!

Next I had to grind off my partially pitted top welds and finish the frame repair. Still need to smooth the out side and box later. Once it is a rolling chassis it will be going to Merle's frame and alignment to verify the frame is straight then I will box and add a big notch.

Borrowed the super duper suspect press to remove my trailing arm bushings. I need to order some energy susp bushings and have yet to take the trailing arms and front control arms to the blasters. busy busy!!

I have been busy at school and this major home improvement... Cost me a few Porterbuit Drop Members... But hey no more panicking when the tornados come. It is in the garage floor but flush, well maybe 1/2 above the floor and you can park over and actually on it.

Back to the truck I found out that once upon a time my truck had busted a lower control arm U bolt and it messed up the shaft alignment pin rivet. uggh Georgia led a hard life. Last pic is the the other side of what it should look like sooo.....

I bought some new control arm U bolts but the only ones available are the 73+ version (Napa pn 650-4065) which are 9/16 vs the old 7/16? so I had to drill out the holes. Snapped one drill bit then bought another. What else could go wrong with this truck?!

So I mocked it all back up with a new Moog shaft and went to welding it all back in.

Thanks Steve, I have read all of your builds and I think you do a fine job! I am just a noob. hope to have this turd on the road in a few months, well maybe by spring. That will be before paint work obviously I may do some primer myself but a driver anyway I hope. I will be contacting you about that Biscayne seat soon. Later :chevy:

Nice work and nice tornado shelter. Isn't it crazy how all the little things you think will be easy end up eating up huge amounts of time?
