Re: New project

I pulled the motor out this winter and added the AFR headed 388 and my rebuilt tci super street fighter in it with the long tubes from the yellow truck . I have not put exhaust on it yet and just got it running to move it around . I threw a set of 3" dumps on it . I was surprised it was that fast . I honestly think it had a 10.90 in it . My buddy is a bracket racer and knows how to drive one without tearing it up . I'm sure it will slow down with the added weight of exhaust and the back pressure from mufflers . Still fast for a pump gas street truck .

Re: New project

got a couple of weeks off from racing and decided I better fix the dipstick and a very small oil leak . Decided to buy a small cell phone bore scope for $16 with free shipping off ebay . SO I snapped some picks and did a leak down on the motor . All the holes were 100% by 28 to 30 psi , so leak down looks good . It looks like my big kit was a bit hot by the looks of a couple pistons and #8 has a pretty good scratch in the wall , but not bad enough to tear down for sure . I have a touch of oil smoke out of both side with the passengerside being a bit worse . About to close it up with new pan gasket , oil dipstick and fresh oil . We race a double header on the 16th of april and the next weekend I think I'm going to put the restrictor plate on it and run 7.0 index in the future . Pics of the inspection if anybody cares to check it out .

Re: New project

Written update . I have had a bunch of motor issues . I thought I got a head gasket on the odd side during the truck race as I had compression in the radiator . I pulled it down and found no issues so I put it back together with new head gaskets . Still leaking down . I pulled the motor and took it to the machine shop for a freshen up as it was smoking . Turns out 3 guide seals on the even side and one on the odd side had ridden the stem up and it was pulling oil down the stems . Machinist suggested pressure checking heads . I had a set of out of the box 210 AFR and a new Victor junior that I threw back on top of my "fresh" short block . Same results . Turned out to be a hole in #5 cylinder . I pulled it back down and found the hole . I got another block and had the machine work done . Im guessing the bore was to tight for the piton or the ring end gap was to tight as it locked up after 2 time trials .

Re: New project

New block was not clearenced enough at the bottom of the cylinders . And rod bolts were hitting . Bore and pistons are ok , but every bearing was bad . Mains I think will be ok but rods not so good . the 3/4 group was really bad and had a lot of heat . Not enough to turn the color on the big end of the rod but enough to show on the inside of the bearing face. They ordered the guide pins to resize the rods and the crank is at the grinders now . Block is being clearenced properly . Hoping for the best for sure.

hotrod 80 06-01-2017 02:03 PM

Re: New project

Just got off the phone with the machine shop . Apparently the oil passage to one of the mains was plugged and that burned up the main bearing . The metal from that is what killed all the other bearings . Once the bearing gained clearance the rods had room to move and hit . 3 rods need to be resized and the crank should clean up at .010 , .020 on the rod surface worst case. Looks like they are going to cover most if not all of the cost.

Looks like you're making the best of a bad situation. Hope it all works right this time.
What's the resolution on the bore scope. I've thought about buying one and never thought the pics would come out that good.

Re: New project

Crank is broken in 2 places. Last race was a double points race . I started the weekend 6 points in second and I am now 90 in second . I don't think there are but 4 races left and I wont be back in this truck until the last race . I will be running the blue truck this coming weekend foot braking again .

Re: New project

More bad news . I pulled my old backup out of the corner of the garage . It is a dish top , hydraulic roller 383 , 6 inch rod deal . I figured take it down and have the flattops put on the crower rods and eagle light weight crank and send it to be rebalanced and im back in business .......WRONG. I pulled the flywheel and the rear main seal housing. The thrust was .058 . Cracked the rear main cap off and the thrust of the crank was burnt up .

Got the old block honed and the flattops swapped to the Crower rads and a brand new Lunati crank . Sent all that to the balancer and got it all back together . It ran 11 minutes and punched the wall out if #4 cylinder . I forgot a spiral lock . Block will get a sleeve and a 2 week wait on the piston. I also ordered the pistons for my dart block 415 .

This has not been a good year for you buddy.
I can relate,, one pure coincidence nightmare from the racing gods after another was the straw that broke this old camels back. (and prompted me to sell everything)

Hang in there.

Re: New project

Well Marv , im trying . I just keep getting problem after problem. Got my Dart blocked short block back today . Went to reassemble it and the cam was questionable . This was a custom grind . I found one similar , but it says sprint car cam . Any opinions about if it will hurt or help power wise on this 383 ?

With the dart block and the sprint car cam this is a bad mofo . . I had planned on running a jackpot race at sealy today , but it was cancelled . Going to HMP to test and tune . Then bracket finals for IHRA the following weekend .

I did ok at the bracket finals . Just got in the money in NHRA in the blue truck and too the yellow truck to IHRA . Also just got in the money there . I let a buddy of mine run the blue truck at IHRA bracket finals and he lost in the semis.

Re: New project

Ran the Houston performance trucks ( HPT ) shootout this weekend with both trucks . I took the yellow truck out to run the 10.0 index and my buddy Jay came and got my Blue street truck to run 12.0 index . The weather was horrible 72 and mist. The track hung with it through a cold front coming through and put us on a good track for sure . Last year I was 10.04 . This year fastest pass was 10.22 . Hard to win leaving a quarter second on the table . I would typically spray , but the air went from 1800 DA to -961 in a matter of hours . I was worried about hurting something here at the first of the season with the points lead . The blue truck came out swinging . It went 12.04 out of the trailer and with just removal of the air cleaner it went 11.70 . So we go to work . Jay had the largest field in the show and had to go 2 extra rounds for the win . I ended up going to 3 trucks just off the tree (.400 pro tree) and got to third round and imo was late @ .071 . The guy I was running was .198 and able to run 9.80 in a S-10 twin turbo truck and run through nose to tail with me for a 10.01 to my 10.22 . I also ran the 6.50 cash days shootout Were in the semis finals I put a new personal best of 1.41 60" on motor for a break out of 6.487 lifting at about 580 foot and taking a 18 wheeler length of strip . Temp settled at around 46 degrees by the end of the race . Still a fun weekend , Here are some of the pictures .

We had 3 people ask us about electronics which are not allowed . The blue truck doesn't even have an MSD box . It is a 388 with a HEI off Ebay that is a footbrake deal . No transbrake .

I learned a lot from these guys . The blue square body was air to air intercooled 5.3 and the white S-10 was waster to air under the intake hat . I think it was a 4.8 with 2 small turbos . I was down on power and didn't want to risk killing a motor with my on the edge nitrous tune up . Both great guys . Think my big tire project is going LS single turbo on E85 now .

Re: New project

Well I had a points lead in super pro / box class going into this weekend . We rain delayed until about noon and they put us a great track together . After second time trial I was changing my 2 step point from 3900 to back to 3600 . and forgot to disconnect the fuel pump. Hydro locked the motor with fuel . Pulled the plugs , and blew the fuel out , but man it started smoking . I worked my way down to 12 cars in super pro or box class Saturday night . Got up sunday thinking I was headed into a good day of racing . Well that went down hill quick . Appearently o broke the starter bolt off in the block by the outside ear . and the second bolt bent right after first round . I was double teched in no box/footbrake and box class . And was the last car up there . We rolled upder the tower and I crawled under the truck and held the starter in place while a buddy started it up . I was rattled badly and in a rush to get suited up and belted in . I was .039 to his .013 and went 6.424 on a 6.41 dial . he slid across the finish line with the front brakes locked for the win. I jacked it up and got the broke bolt off and a new set of bolts put in . Last car in the staging lane for round 2 in super pro . Ended up being .010 red . Brought it back to the pits and when I killed it and it hydro locked again . Found the back float stuck open.

Re: New project

I tore into it today . I checked the fuel pressure and it was dead on 6.5 psi . Drained the tank , cleaned the filter ( wasn't bad ) . Then pulled the rear bowl . Float level was to high . I miss read the instructions . It said fuel to the bowl inspection plug threads and 2 turns . This meant 2 flats or ad 1/3 turn. Once I left ( the starting line ) the fuel pump would force it to spill over making it just rich enough to kill some numbers . Then when the motor would use enough to lower the level it would run out the back clean. Should be good to go . Going out Friday to test and make 1/4 mile passes to see if I can get enough cylinder heat to reseal the rings.

Redemption 12.0 no prep . What a great time . Runner up in 7.0 Friday night . Lost on a double breakout and got to 6 cars in 6.50 index Saturday and spun , but was less than a half a car at the finish for the loss. Had a great time , met some new friends and came home with some money .

Well what a scorcher. Over 100 degrees both days . We ended up going out at 5 car Saturday during the bracket race . Was in the no box gamblers race and ended up with the win at like 1:30 am . Then Sunday lost at 3 cars . 3 races = 2 checks and some cash. Pretty good weekend .

hotrod 80 06-05-2018 10:21 AM

Re: New project

I have literally beat the crap out of this thing lately . So I put it in the garage for a good look over yesterday . Had 5 valves with more than .030 lash . Just set everything back were it needed to be . Oh and the rear bowl was spilling over due to being set wrong , but the front was also set wrong so I fixed that . One electric fan wasn't working , fixed that . Tires are done so I bought 2 pair of slicks . I still have a decent set to run on while they come in . Plans are to check the brake pads and sample the trans fluid and rear end fluid change . I think I'm gonna try a set of 29,5Ws for no prep and see how that goes .
