Crappy lighting, parts, steel, tools, & other various equipment in the way of decent pics. My hope was to roll it out for some pics in the sun....

Edit: I added these cell pics I took mid day to send to Matt. He also took a couple of pics from his phone which are typically very decent. I'm waiting for them to upload to my e-mail & I'll post them up once they do....

Progress looks good Scot. Crappy pics, set backs, and all aside it still looks much better than a bare frame.

Re: Project: Recycle

Truck arms tight w/pinion shims installed. Prob will swap the 3° shims for the 2.5° set.

Got the correct 'front' truck arm bolts & nylock nuts. The one's previously installed were coarse thread & barely long enough. I swapped them for some longer, fine thread bolts (I used fine thread on the TA mounts too).

I got new upper a-arm nuts & got them installed. I decided to just clean & paint the existing OE washers & run them. It's not 100% tight but snugged down (waiting to set it on the ground under weight before final tightening). I then went to snug up the lower a-arm hardware & realized the bushing 'sleeves' were too long. A quick text to Mr. Porter confirmed they're trim to fit so I took care of that.

I didn't have the correct upper shock bolts (too short) so I got longer ones & swapped them in place. Other than that, trips to Fastenall & Lowes to swap some 'un-used' hardware for different stuff I will use.

I've been moving the rear HD drum set-up in & out of the truck hoping to have enough time to get them in color & swapped into place but haven't had enough time yet. Need to get the front rotors in color as well so they can be installed . ....

Today I took one step back, then two forward....

A week or so ago, I had managed to scratch one of the spindles when mocking the spindle/caliper in place. It had been about 3-4 days since I had painted it so I didn't hesitate to grab the rattle can for a little touch-up. The result was the previous paint under the 'fresh' paint started bubbling up bad.

Per manufacturer (VHT) recommendations, I had to let it cure for @ least 7-days before fixing the fix. Ten days later (today), I cut down the problem area w/some 320 dry paper, wiped it w/degreaser, & re-shot some color. Everything went on nice & smooth this time. You'd have a hard time figuring out where the 'repair' was (not that it can even be seen  ).

While that was going on, I covered up the other spindle & used it as a turn-table to paint the new replacement rotors. While everything was drying, I swapped the last 2 lower a-arm sleeves into place. Now all 4 bushings are 'snug' & waiting for the chassis to be on the ground for final torqing.

I re-assembled the spindles to the control arms & went to install the rotors only to realize I no longer had the spindle nut hardware. After yet another trip to the parts store, the spindles/calipers/rotors are joined.

I wanted to throw the wheels on for a lil' look but . . ...... no lug nuts. Lug nuts are in the dually now. Getting closer though....

The guy that made them is the next door neighbor of my buddy (Detroit Customs). He's semi-retired & likes this kind of stuff. I wanted to do a run of 50 (25 sets) but needed to make sure they worked before asking to have more made.

If it happens, I'll let you guys know.

Re: Project: Recycle

Drumroll . . ..... the chassis for 'Recycle' officially touched mother earth tonight.

There's no air in the bags (no air-lines yet) & it only has shocks on the front, but @ full dump, the frame rail was 2.5" (F) & 3.0" (R) @ the cab mount centerlines w/stock spindles (15" wheel, 27" tall tire). The upper BJ's appear to be binding (or the tie-rods) because the bags are @ approx 4.5" & the shocks are still @ 12". I should have another 1-1.5" to go up front. I'm going to disconnect the TRE's tomorrow & see if there's a change.

The rear was/is the limiting factor (as planned). It's bottomed out in the c-notch.

I'm thinkin' it will look pretty decent & should drive low full time w/plenty of ground clearance (my objective vs. trying to lay frame).

I couldn't get pics as it was too dark for pics & my cell just can't capture a good image (the shop is crowded so it's hard to get a decent view). I plan to put some schraders into place tomorrow & will roll it out in the sun for some pics......

LOL, i am sure everyone on this board gets tired of me harrassing them and thinks i must have nothing better to do all day every day other than ask them for pics....... Well this is mostly true , i sell cars for a living 6 days a week 10 hrs a day and most of that time right here at my desk in front of this computer... so what i am saying is ...... WHERE'S THE PICS !!

Dude, sleep is waaay over rated. You will have plenty of time to sleep when you have passed on to that big garage in the sky.

Meanwhile, that frame is kickin. I love the clean fresh look....:metal:

Beautiful chassis.
What did you use for washers under the heads of all the bolts?
AN washers?

Absolute artwork. That chassis is really beautiful.

Re: Project: Recycle

That is just beautiful! I love the wheel/hub cap set up. I think that you had a 10" rear wheel made, what size tires did you use front/rear?

After reading your post about the front BJ binding, in the pictures it looks like your upper A-Arms are upside down, possibly swapped side to side (compared to other photos I have seen)? Am I missing something about that?

Anyway, I am jealous of your progress...:metal:

Re: Project: Recycle

Thanks guys.

Lolife99, I used SS lock washers (the split-lock washers are readily available). This give more clamping force on the bolt/nut & keeps the end that turns off of the fresh PC/paint. I also used nyloc nuts everywhere except for the front shocks (not available in that particular sizing). All nuts/bolt for frame, brackets, & x-members is GRADE-8. The T/A mounts got GRADE-9.

Aggie91, the a-arms are mounted different vs. typical set-ups. I tried them both ways & couldn't see any difference as far as functionality. The way I installed them just 'looked' cleaner. We also installed the BJ from the bottom of the arm (again, a cleaner look). My feeling is the binding is a result of absolutely no shims for the upper a-arms. Space them out .750" or so & I think I'll be fine. The tie-rods were definitely in bind..... As soon as I raised the suspension, I could easily adjust the toe; with it dumped, I couldn't get the adapter sleeve to budge.

Rolling stock is 215-70-15's on 15x6's & 285-60-16's on 16x10's.
