Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
The hydro boost system is a must for me on any classic that I intend to drive. Especially if you have any type of cam that doesn't produce the 20" Hg required to run a vacuum booster. Note: I've read and been told 18" Hg is a minimum, but I had that on my GTO and didn't get near the braking power from the front discs as I did with all drums. Once I went with hydro boost, it stopped almost as well as a new car.
Same experience with the C10. The 350 has a cam in it and can't produce the minimum vacuum so the discs were horrible. My wife wouldn't drive it for fear of running into someone. When I went to the hydro boost system, she thought it stopped like her 2013 Explorer. Much better... until the old crap failed anyway... :banghead: I expect the new 4 wheel discs and all new lines should be awesome with the hydro boost system. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Just read through your build thread and figured I would hop onboard for the ride. You've done a great job on things and several items are on my list too, just haven't got that far yet.
Anyways, looks awesome so far. Even with the front end tweaked it still turns heads. |

Here are the rear calipers painted to match the fronts, which match the truck. :metal:

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
This past weekend, I took Friday off to work on the truck. Saturday was spent at a family luncheon, so I didn't get anything done that day. I did finish up my weekend with a full Sunday of working on the truck... How 'bout some pics?
Installed new CPP modular drop spindles and brackets... replaced the old drop spindles for future brake upgrades. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pszzefbi1e.jpg Here's the finished product... Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psgeds5fmn.jpg The things you can't see: Replaced the bearings and races, took the air bags out and replaced the 1/4" air fittings with 3/8" air fittings, added a bulkhead fitting to the cross member (you can barely see it near the back of the upper control arm, it's shiny silver in color), and reinstalled it all. Here's how it looks with the truck... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psehpbk33g.jpg |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Looks great! Love the color match.
You and I are tracking similar right now. Willwoods installed but going in tomorrow to install McGaughys 2.5" drop spindles. :gmc2: |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Looks great. I love those calipers painted body color.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Looks great! I am wondering how they perform too.
|
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Duane, the Willwoods are working fine, but I need to replace the CPP booster, because it's just not holding a vacuum. Just got my drop spindles installed and the front end aligned today. I'll be posting some more pics on my build thread as soon as I can make a little time.
:gmc2: |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Awesome new brakes! I would like a full consumer report on these Wilwoods when you get to test them. I want to do this upgrade myself.

Been raining here, so it's slow going, but I did manage to get the rear axles pulled last night. Sorry, no pics.... it was dark. Hopefully this evening I'll be able to get the new seals in and the Wilwood backing plate/parking brake installed. If I can do that I'll probably install the axles again... if I can get that far. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Well, I did manage to get the old axle seals out, paint the ends of the axles and install new seals
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psd5tjmb02.jpg Then I installed the backing plate/parking brake assembly http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps6ww5uwqq.jpg By this time it was pitch black and the bugs were attracted to the drop light I was using, and were buzzing around my face. So I cleaned up and called it a night. I'll get the axles in tonight. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Sharp. It will have awesome stopping power.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
I got the rear discs on before we left for the holiday weekend... here are a couple pics.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Looks good Duane. One question, what did you paint the rotor with?
|
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Thanks! I just used rattle can black. Semi Gloss rustoleum to be exact. (edit: it was actually an engine paint... Duplicolor I think) I'll scuff off some of the pad area just to keep it from clogging the new pads, but I wanted to make sure it's coated everywhere the pad doesn't touch.
I've heard that you can just leave it and let the pads scrape it off, but I'm still not convinced it won't cause any problems for the pads. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Looks good! I got tired of waiting for the pads to wear the coating that Wilwood puts on their rotors. So I took the wheels off, put a scotch brite rolock disc on a die grinder, and took it off:lol:
Once you get on the road, I'd like to know if you seem to get a LOT of brake dust from the Wilwood pads. I'm getting quite a bit. |

So last night I got the gear oil in the rearend and bench bled the master cylinder. I put it on the truck and hooked up the lines, but since it was pitch black outside and no helper, I cleaned up and called it a night. This morning when I was about to leave for work, I noticed a big puddle under the front of the truck, concentrated in the middle, but also the passenger side of the cross member. I had to have forgotten to tighten one of the brake line fittings, or I have a bad flare because it was brake fluid. Thankfully I didn't bleed the whole system or completely fill the MC, so it wasn't a ton of fluid, but it looked like about 8 ounces... still a large amount. :banghead: I guess I'll be tightening all of my fittings this evening. :uhmk: |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
I finally got the brakes ready to go... or so I think. Still need to bed them in and double check for leaks. I did have a couple leaks from fittings that weren't tight enough. Apparently the stainless tube is very tough so you need to really crank down on the fittings to get it to seal. Once that was done, I used my Phoenix Systems brake bleeder to vacuum bleed them as best I could. Finished up with a standard two man bleed with help from my wife.
Here's the master cylinder and prop valve... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psosrxnjbr.jpg and another of the engine from the front. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pstvg4nw6p.jpg And the calipers peaking though the junky wheels... rear: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psvkble2l3.jpg Front: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psezcbxryk.jpg I also ran new 3/8" air line from the front bags to the rear, in preparation for the Accuair system. Had it layed out for a bit (cowl is off so I could realign the front fender... once loose it just relaxed back into place.) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps2qykntgi.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psghm1pm1a.jpg As a test, I ran it around the neighborhood (after verifying it held in place in my driveway) and the new brakes seem to be working great. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Nice work! Looks great.
|
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Looks really good. How do the brakes compare to before?
|
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Nice stance.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Looks good from where I'm sitting.;) I like the stance.

Nice progress Duane! Looks great

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Thanks guys! The brakes seem to be an improvement. Still working on some things and haven't fully bed in the brakes yet, so I'm sure they'll get better. Need to dial in the rear adjustment too.
I removed the damaged grille and bumper this weekend to see what the extent of the damage was. It doesn't look like it dented the fender after all. Can't feel anything either. It did chip the paint, and there's a lot of it... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psqyhqhhlm.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psug9a9o1y.jpg While I had it apart, and the wife was out of town for a couple days, I pulled it in the garage so I could get to work on the passenger side air tank splash shield. Here's the before (sorry it's blurry, cell phone pics are hit and miss... this one missed and I didn't notice until now). http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psikv9bwlb.jpg Here's what I bent up. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps4wb8h5n3.jpg Installed. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psv3gx4iii.jpg This splash shield uses the three wheel tub bolts from the top, and the one fender brace bolt on the bottom. The brace is gone since the tank is in the way, so this will give a tiny bit of strength back to it. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Nice work on the shield. What happened to the bumper and grille?

I was going to try and make something like the rear splash shield (the curved piece that protects the bedside behind the tire) but the tank wasn't having it since it already claimed that space for itself. |

Looking good Duane!

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Thanks Mike!
Well, I did make some progress this weekend. I got the new grille and bumper on. Notice that I painted the headlight surround on this one. I think I like it better than all chrome. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pstih24owy.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psonhrsgjz.jpg I also replaced the standard bolts with stainless allen head bolts for the core support and radiator covers. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psnksgoarq.jpg You can see in this pic, there isn't much damage, just chipped paint, that I simply concealed with color to draw less attention to it. I'll fix it right one day, when I'm ready to repaint the truck. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pslnyrjbl6.jpg I then spent some time replacing my spark plug wires... again. Here's why: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps8bdysilb.jpg This is the Accel Extreme 9000 Ceramic plug wires I'm now using. This is my third set of plug wires in 3 years. Hopefully these will last longer. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pscwgpgyti.jpg And finally, I installed the 6x9 cab corner speaker brackets and my 6x9 speakers. Finally! Been sitting on these for over a year now. :waah: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psz3unz8xs.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pse9tyeli6.jpg |
