Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
If you can create new panels, as well as simulate the stock lines why not makes them follow the wheel tub. That will give you the strength in the panel and look correct too.

Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
Nice. Can you lay out how you did it? Do you have a shear, brake, etc? Is there somewhere we can go to see more demos on metal fab like you are doing?

Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
Got my rear wheel wells finished(tacked) this past weekend. For the top part where metal had to be added, I used a pair of original wheel tubs that I had. With a little massaging, the front part where the body line is fit really nice, however the rear 90 degree bend was too tight of a radius so I had to make a new piece for that area. Come out pretty good for bending metal in a vise with a hammer!

Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
I've had this same thought. Kindof a combination of yours and VA's. Would be simple enough to roll in a body line, break a flange for the floor, and provide a little room for wider meatss. Go for it and show is how it's done...
Tubs look good! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
I started my inner bed panels. I decided to rework the existing ones rather than try to make new. I thought getting the recessed stepped body lines just right would be near impossible...for me anyway. So with a little thought, I came up with the idea of cutting the ends of the panels off and flipping them. (you will see what I mean in the pics) This is all in an effort to keep the body lines flowing with the wheel tubs.
First thing to do was to adjust the arch in the bedside to the new shorter wheel tub. Here is a scribe line where I made my first incision! http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7191/6...ee0bc1b0_c.jpg And piece removed http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5114/6...edf175f3_c.jpg Heres the beginnings of the new piece going in. I put a bead roll in it to aid in the part that will be rolled at the edge. I will cut down the middle of the bead roll and hammer it over. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5337/6...0e9eb118_c.jpg Here it is cut http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7255/7...ddc34a73_c.jpg and with nuts welded to the backside to bolt to the wheel tub http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5345/6...77468723_c.jpg and tacked in place. at this point, I removed part of the panel(the part that I need) from the bedside so that I can get a dolly behind the panel better. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5467/7...d657fb6f_c.jpg Here is the part at the end of the panel that will be cut off. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7235/7...3db8c771_c.jpg cut http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5152/6...de72cd0f_c.jpg and flipped http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7237/6...32d15c84_c.jpg This is the only piece I really needed tacked in place http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5192/7...367f7857_c.jpg And the rest a new piece of metal. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7181/6...2bbcc020_c.jpg finished welding! http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5347/7...d4f51189_c.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7119/6...38d77f52_c.jpg Next I have to do the other end of the panel, then bring the whole panel to someone with an 8 foot break to make the flange on the top so it can be spot welding in just like it came from the factory. |

Re: Project: Bad Bagged '68.5
here's a little update while I watch cars going in single file at daytona:(
More work on the inner bed panel: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8385/8...40e3bc0f_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8090/8...ca678aac_c.jpg had to modify ends of outer bed panels http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8383/8...c4399014_c.jpg At this point, I brought the inner bed panels to a fabrication shop that had an 8 foot break to but the 90 degree flanges on the top of the inner panel. Then I spot welded them in. Also took the header panel to the shop and had them shorten it and put a flange on that also. Here are pics of the start of the bed structure. Using 1" square stock with 1/8" wall. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8369/8...42d423f5_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8104/8...a2ed69d1_c.jpg watchin the race: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8098/8...f704528a_c.jpg Here is a close-up of how the body lines of the inner bed panels still match up with the modified wheel tubs. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8517/8...b5d5e11c_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8513/8...0ac90f5b_c.jpg |
