The th350 I have came from summit.
Here is a way I've been considering to mount the tail.

also, not in a rush, but when/ if you get some time could you post a straight on pic from the rear showing the taillights, and then get me a couple measurements of where they sit? bed to the edge of the lens center, and upper body line to the top of the lens center would be perfect!
I am going to do a version of the fleet lens on my step fenders as well. ( I wish gm had done this on 60-66 in the first place)

.
I was 19 when I did the fleetside lights. I just hacked them in there. :)
I do have some fleetside light buckets that I eventually will weld in there.

thanks, that is perfect!
they look like you got them in the right spot.

this will help when I do mine, same as you are planning I am also going to use the fleetside taillight buckets.

It would be kinda neat if it is the 283 I rebuilt myself with a jcwhitney kit back in 85/86. That means my rebuild lasted until that ol guy that I bought it back from blew it up. :)

Not too big a deal, just would of been nice if the ol fella who paid for a 327 would of got a 327,
instead of his mechanic selling him a rebuilt 283 and passing it off as a 327.
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...ps709ef08f.jpg

But there might be a chance his mechanic just rebuilt my 283 I put back in the truck when I sold it in 86/87
3896944 = 1965 - 67

You see, when my dad and first bought it, it had a 283 in it.
When I wrecked it, I put in a 327 out of a SS Impala, but also kept the 283 stored.
Just before I sold the truck in 86/87, I sold the 327 to a guy in Canby who said he wanted it for his Nova.
I rebuilt the 283 with a JCWhitney kit, and put it back in.
So, it just may be that same 283 I sold it with.

The other side of the block opposite the casting number. . A letter and 3 numbers

Ok,
I'll check tomorrow.

Re: Lost My 65

Letter is month.. then a 2 digit day.. then the year digit..
Example E216 would be May 21 66.. since the block is a 60s we know 6 is 66.. :-D

I confuse Pontiac info with chevy sometimes.
This is from a chevy site.
Casting Date*
Small block casting date is located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing. Big block on the right side of engine above the oil pan rails.

Casting Date Example: E038*- (E = Month, 03 = Day, 8 = Last digit of model year (1978)).

Month: A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr, E = May, F = Jun, G = July, H = Aug, I = Sep, J = Oct, K = Nov, L = Dec

Re: Lost My 65

I've been spending a lot of time in the 'Engine & Drivetrain" section of the forums. I don't know much about automatic transmissions. I bought a summit th350 from a local guy. Included was the flexplate and torque converter. As I started mocking things up, I noticed the flexplate he included wasn't going to work. Fortunately I still had the larger flexplate left over from the 79 donor I had from my 66 service truck build.
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...pslbbi3ono.jpg
.
From my research in these forums I learned depending on which flexplate you needed, determined what starter you needed. Fortunately I had the correct starter also.
.
Next I started reading up on torque converters. I first checked to see if the torque converter he including would bolt up to my larger (14") flexplate. It did.
.
http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...psxiriaazh.jpg
.
.
So now my only concern/question is what stall torque converter do I have.
I'm going to take my chances and see how it goes.
.
I've also been reading... related to the stall of the torque converter is my engine/cam. My engine has quite a lope to it, and it requires premium octane.

What rpm does your engine like to idle at?

I really don't know.
I got the starter and flexplate mounted today.
Cranked it over just to see if all was good.
Tomorrow I plan on mounting the radiator support and radiator to start it up and run it for a short time.
I'll hook the tachometer up also and see what idle is.

Re: Lost My 65

When I poured the slab in my pole barn to have a clean dry area to work on my truck, I didn't consider the height of the loft above. Fortunately I had only tacked the sheathing down. So I pulled up a center section of the sheathing, rearranged the joists, and now i have an area that I can hoist things through.

Re: Lost My 65

So, I was mocking up the Th350 so I could figure up my driveshaft length, and as many times as I checked, I never really felt comfortable getting a driveshaft made/shortened for the Ho32 knowing I eventually will be swapping it out for a 12-Bolt. Although it's only around 5/8" difference, I figured I might as well go ahead and do that swap now also.
I didn't want to dig this far into it at this time, but it just makes more sense to do it all now.

I would go ahead and do the swap now. No use redoing the shaft twice.

BTW I think your idle is a bit high. mine is around 500

Re: Lost My 65

Yep, doing it now.
That's the 12-Bolt sitting behind the bed.
.
Too many of the upgrades that I've been wanting to do, all make sense to do now while I have it tore down.
As I mentioned before, I don't like taking on too much for fear 'life' will get in the way and the truck sits out there torn apart.

That kinda happened to me, but I agree that I'd go ahead with that swap as well while you're there.

It sounds like you need a 22-2400 stall converter.

The key to getting that project done.... in focused steps.. break it down into bite sized chunks. I focus my efforts on my current project by setting up 6 hours every Sunday morning with 1 or 2 goals in mind.. since doing this.. I've made significant progress.

Re: Lost My 65

Got Captainfab's axle perches/saddles mocked up today.
I approached it very similar to how I did the 14-bolt on my 3/4 ton service box truck.
I propped up the back end - bracing the trailing arms with 2x6 wood members. Removed the Ho32, and then made a template out of plywood (wafer board) - marking the existing axle perch holes. Then I lined my template up under the 12-Bolt. I was hoping I wasn't going to have to remove the existing perches from the 12-Bolt.
As you can see from the pics; I pretty much have Captainfab's axle perches slapped up against the existing 12-Bolt perches. I'll tac them on and then test fit it before welding them on permanently.
The pinion angle will remain the same.

Tacked on Captainfab's axle perches.
Bolted them up, tightly, then tacked them permanently.
I'll pull it back out tomorrow to weld them up completely.
The axle is out of a 65, so it looks like I'll be able to use the track bar too.

Just a small video of my engine running.
I wanted to run it some after i cleaned it to check for oil leaks and idle rpm

LostMy65 11-03-2015 07:15 PM

Re: Lost My 65

Having things apart, I found one of my oil leaks. Someone at one time looks to have used a chisel or something to install the cam plug. But then later when a new one got installed, those chisel marks actually damaged the inner surface of the cam plug hole.
You can even see how those chisel marks scraped the edge of the cam hole plug.
There's four on the plug which align perfectly with the chisel marks on the cam hole.

Re: Lost My 65

The question I have now is, how do I remove those bumps on the inner surface of the cam shaft hole?
Maybe a small three or four stone hone?

LostMy65 11-03-2015 10:36 PM

Re: Lost My 65

I think this 2" grinding wheel might be the best solution.
I only need to just smooth the very outer edge. The cam plug actually sits a bit behind the chisel bump.
It's just when inserting the plug that the plug gets that scratch in it. So if i remove the bump from the outer rim, I think it'll seal up ok.

It sounds good to me.

I have never had to deal with the stuff like you are with the cam. It sounds like you are going at it with the right ideas.

LostMy65 11-04-2015 01:09 PM

Re: Lost My 65

Talking with a guy at work today, I think we came up with a good idea.
Lightly grind the old plug I removed, drill a hole in the center of it,
Wipe some grease around the outer edge of the plug, and then slide it back against the cam.
Then use the 2" grinding stone I mention above.
Wipe down. Remove plug. Wipe again. Install new plug.
