looking good! as far as body filler get some longer sanding blocks, it will help keep it looking straight! you can make some blocks my buddys dad has a few he made for different sanding jobs! Wal-Mart has a bigger sanding block, I think its 2x9 or 3x9 block with a handle on top, it would be in the paint section! I bought one and used it on my rear tubs, works great! im also learner with bodywork and fillers, keep it up, WE'VE got 11 months tops, to get them ready! just a lil motivation for you!!

Hood is looking good Don. You can also stand back about 3 feet and rattle can some black across the primer. It will speckle the area you have worked on. Then take your long block and lightly scuff the guide coat. It will quickly reveal high and low spots.

Thanks guys! The encouragement and guidance comments are well received and very much appreciated.:metal: I'm learning that patience is a must when doing bodywork… the hood is coming along nicely and I should be ready to prime and paint this next weekend… Here's a shot after spraying some fill primer today…

Looking good Don! Upol also makes a glazing putty called dolphin glaze which works really well....we use it everyday at work. I usually always finish my bondo work with 180 and feather around it and then go over the repair area with a skim coat of glazing putty to smooth out the transition from the bondo to the sourrounding area...if that makes any sense...just what works for me anyway. Good luck and keep rockin buddy

Thanks for the kind words, and the advice… Sprayed some fill primer (rattle can variety) and got a bit overzealous in a couple of spots that decided to crack as the primer cured...:dohh: I guess that means more sanding and hunting some dolphin glaze, Thanks JMo!

Thanks to my "Cyber Brothers" (Clem's term) I have found the motivation and much needed assistance to tackle my build on a much deeper level than originally planned...:metal:

Hey bud, nice going on the truck! I found a stock tire carrier but found that with the style fender I am using( Longbed cutout) my tire is an inch to big.:whine::banghead: so I am gonna find a shortbed fender. I did find one but the guy wanted $250 and I still needed to pay shipping....MAN! Those things are getting hard to find!!! I found a bunch while I wasn't looking for one...and now there gone...Oh well! It's all part of the fun!:chevy: Can't wait to see the new hood on by the way!:metal:

Here's a small hood update… Began the day replacing the Fuel Pump on the boy's better half's 93 Accord, thanks to my bud Dillon who let me use his lift there was no crawling around on the concrete to drop the tank…;) Afterwards I finally found some time this weekend to do some sanding and respray of the fill primer…
http://imageshack.com/a/img856/3890/oubv.jpg

Getting closer… The Pic was taken with the primer still wet in places, the temp was dropping when I finally called it a day… :sumo:

On to the update on the reason I'm out here…:metal:

Sunday was a dreary day which transformed into a day of rest and football...:bann:
Today, Monday, began, as mentioned in the previous post, working on a 93 Accord, following that job I attempted to attain a higher level of patience, in the way of bodywork...:sumo: following that, and a temperature drop, I was able to get started on the other inner fender...:mm:
This is the problem area, the end that bolts to the Radiator Support…
http://imageshack.com/a/img440/6453/0gq9.jpg

following a quick scribe around the patch, courtesy of Jeff, I went to work with my cut-off wheel...
http://imageshack.com/a/img27/4497/8xb6.jpg

after the surgery…and GRINDING!!!:metal:
http://imageshack.com/a/img199/1650/uih1.jpg

I found my Argon bottle was NOT fully emptied, so I HAD to make a few sparks...
http://imageshack.com/a/img853/9766/lgff.jpg

Now the welding gas is completely gone… cannot get any readings on the gauges now!!!:waah:

It's late, I'm beat, and the pillow is calling my name...
Laterz! :thud:

Hey Jmo, and any other body guys who care to add input, I have a quick question or 3 about glazing putty… Jmo is this the putty you referred to?
http://imageshack.com/a/img96/5387/xkh6.jpg

Is it a 2 part mix like Body filler, and what grit paper would be best for smoothing out once the putty is cured? And finally, would I just need regular primer over these spots before paint? Thanks for your input guys!!!:mm:
All this is new to me and leaving me a bit

That's the stuff it's. 2 part mix. And I usually start with like 100 grit paper to take down the high spots or not so smooth edges and then block with 180 then feather around with 220 and 300 and then sometimes 400 grit. I'm not a huge fan of the primer will fill it method I like to be able to make my bodywork smooth enough to seal it if I had too. I usually use an etch primer first for any bare metal any larger than the size of a nickel. Then a few coats of high build primer and some guild coat then block with 400 and then 600 and paint....hope this helps

In Post #499 I mentioned that I was planning on some Steering Wheel work during this past work week...:hmm: well, seems my dremel tool went missing, so I spent the week scratching my head, trying to remember last place said tool was seen...:banghead:
After digging around and moving other tools, wa la… it was buried under my framing nailer, hiding in the dark recesses of the black box the nailer was residing in...:wash:
Now that it re-emerged, time for some wheel work… Here are some pics before the actual work begins…

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150...c/513/thjz.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150.../c/59/xbwi.jpg

Plans are to use the dremel to grind out the cracks and fill with epoxy then paint…
Any tips or suggestions are welcome, I haven't repaired any steering wheels in the past...:mm:

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

don't know how others approach the steering wheel cracks but i do it sorta like fiberglass repair. i take an x-acto knife and cut a V in the scratch about 1/16 inch wide then cut a deeper reverse ^ as best i can. which make an hourglass shape where the crack was. mix up jb weld and push the mix into the cuts. it will shrink up a bit but should lock the crack so it won't reappear. another coat of jb should get it pretty flush and after that its bodywork.

theres probably other and better ways but thats just my way...

have a nice holiday this week my friend and stay warm...

Good work on the wheel. I use the same process. The last one in the 65 I used a 2 part panel adhesive or epoxy as I was out of JB weld. It worked great, no shrink back. Primed it, sanded it, sealed it and the base cleared it. Wet sealer, wet base wet clear..no dry time in between. Let it sit 24 hrs and all good.

Looks great! I used JB on mine and found that a little bit of heat gun action kinda helped "wick" it into the cracks.

Need to fix my steering wheel too. I know it had some typical minor cracks, but I haven't looked at it in so long, I don't really remember what they look like. I know some companies (such as Eastwood) make a kit specifically for these kinda issues. I've seen others use JB weld as well, & it seems to do the job just as good. Nice work, & hope ya'll have a Happy Thanksgiving as well. :bowtie:
