Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

It's water vapor that comes from the moisture in the air above the fuel that condenses when it gets cold. Since fuel is lighter than water, the condensation settles in the lower part of the tank or fuel line where it can freeze. It's always a good idea to keep a good amount of fuel in the tank especially when it gets really cold. The condensation comes from moisture in the air above the fuel (mostly). If you limit the amount of air above the fuel, you are limiting the amount of moisture in the system. The antifreeze additives are made to absorb the water in the system so it can't freeze.

Most gas has some water in it. Water vapor in the fuel line freezes and blocks the line.I think it's less common these days because the alcohol added to modern gas absorbs the moisture.---No expert---Jack

Won't happen in CA except maybe in the Sierra's. When it gets really cold around here fuel lines and carbs will freeze, in the 80's my 235 equipped truck was the only vehicle that would start, wifes Honda was frozen solid at 15 below. Later in the 90's same thing happened but my DD then was 41 Master Deluxe with 216, again it was the one that would start that cold. Big carb jets and passages made the difference.

Snow, 27 degrees and a Nasty wind chill today. It was a planning and research day. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I had serious plans to drill the rivets out of the front crossmember (GMC) and fit the Chevy crossmember in place.

We got the front clip, cab, doors and rear fenders all sanded with 180 grit so we can get some epoxy primer sprayed. We only have another hour or so of sanding and then I will treat some of the surface tugs to the CLR and scotch brite pad treatment.

Its been raining steadily here in So Calif. the last 3 days. :waah: Today the sun finally came out and I took a few minutes to install the stainless tail lights that 57chevyman posted about last week. They look alot better than my Walmart $6 trailer lights that I had on before. Next project will be to install my blue dots into these lenses.

Nothing pretty. I managed to remove my rear suspension. Man was that a dirty job. I'm glad this part is over with.

Good weekend. Got the wiper fluid hose routed. Dropped in a battery and started checking circuits. Everything is working so far, except for a couple of things that are not critical; transfer case 4wd indicator and over-ride switch for the courtesy lights I installed. More info in the build thread.

Got my 1953 3600 with a 235 in it to start and run on its own! Probably not a big deal for many here, but I wrestled with it a bunch last fall and it just wouldn't cooperate. It would run if I poured gas into the carb, but thats it. Today I put a new fuel pump on it, although I think the old one is still good, just installed wrong. Put a fresh fuel filter on it too. Took fuel line off, ran a little water into it and blew it out to ensure it was clear. Put it back together, put the end of the fuel line straight into a gas can, poured a little gas into the carb and it fired right up...and kept running this time! Let it run and turned it off. Started and let it run several more times over the course of an hour or so, and it started and ran every time on its own. I'm reinvigorated! A few more weeks and hopefully it'll be warm here for good and I can really tear back into it.

I'm planning to sign up for the local community college welding class this summer session, psyched for that! Needs floors and some other spots patched. Short term goal is to have it on the road this spring/summer for local use. Medium term goal is to have it in good enough shape to drive to Texas, sampling BBQ the whole way there, in April 2015 for a friend's wedding. With 13 months to go, I'm pretty sure I can make it happen. Not totally sure what the long term goal is for it yet. Still would like to do a 4x4 conversion on it at some point...or find a second one to do that to :)

I made & installed the B+ to starter wire, managing to route it away from the exhaust & all the sharp edges.
Just a few more wires to go...

Dave, who dropped your axle and how many inches? Did you have the king pins rebuilt? I'm curious how well it steers afterward? Does it "wander" like my '55.2?
