I added a vintage roof rack to my 53' Suburban. This is a temporary version as I have a show in Oct (C10 Fall Revival) in Denton N. Carolina to attend.

Over the winter I will build a more elaborate rack.

Thanks
Marc

those are sweet cast ends!

Hopefully you never need to make a tool like this to fix your gutters. My cab had a flattened spot on both sides from over zealous tightening of roof racks. This tool worked but it took some patience.

Nice thinking outside the box LG. I bet vice grips would also work. More cash laid out though.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

In use it is more about squeezing many times and moving it around than brute force, not sure vice grip compound action would be better, but I think the locking feature would be a detriment.

The piece that goes inside the gutter has to be smaller than the finished profile to fit into the gap, so over-doing it would give you a stretched section that you would have to deal with.

I was pretty much able to get to 'metal finished' but probably spent a hour or two on each side.

Just got the tires mounted onto the new wheels and got them onto the truck.

NVRDONE - Yes, for now, I have 6 lug on the back (original rear axle) and 5 on the front. As you can see, it isn’t visible with the hubcaps on there. Rear axle upgrade is on the list but won't happen soon.

I mowed my way through the weeds to get to mine today. Now I need to pull weeds behind the sailboat to get to the shed that I have alot of the parts stashed in.

I did open the hood on the truck to get some photos for someone.

Ha! Guess I'll have to settle for slightly less than perfect. ;-)

Running out of nice weather, so decided to paint the firewall so I can drop the engine in next weekend. Then spend the winter wiring and plumbing.
Then paint the rest of the exterior in the spring.

Man, that thing is beautiful, and knowing it has a 409 under the hood adds to the beauty. It's hard to believe that people used them hard, like any other pickup, but they did. I guess that's why there's so few nice originals left.

For now all that means that if you go any distance you need to carry a second spare to match the front or travel with a buddy who carries one that will fit like my buddy used to do. We never needed it for his car but my having a spare that fit his car that didn't have room for one solved the issue.

That is a great looking truck and exactly what I was wanting in 1974 when I had a real want for a Cameo.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

Today I took the truck out for a drive with my son. It's so nice when everything works. At the hardware store I spotted a '54 that was a mix of new and old tech. Ended up meeting the owner and getting to swap truck stories for a bit. Nothing special for the truck, but a nice fall day for me and for my son.

Got the engine back from the shop yesterday(bro-n-law), and prepped and painted today.
Next weekend mating with transmission and slipping into the truck.

Trying this bodywork gig again with filler over SPI Epoxy vrs over bare metal.
A little back story.. years back I had started this project with filler over bare metal and covered in red oxide primer. Life got in the way and truck was stored in a non climate controlled shop for years.
Starting over I discovered that the red oxide primer was a thing of the past so all panels were stripped down to bare metal again. I found rust forming under the filler which I’m sure would have caused failure to the paint system down the road.
I have heard lots of discussion about filler first vrs primer first.
I essentially had created my own science experiment with the truck being stored all of those years. I’m aware that the red oxide primer and filler are porous which probably contributed also.
Hopefully will be able to finish the project this time.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

looks good!

There are 2 reasons I was able to keep my 40+ year project and restart it a few years ago. Free storage (outside). I sprayed enamel over the unfinished body work inside and out before storing it outside uncovered for what was planned to be 1 winter.

keep after it and get it on the road!

great science project results. thats why I do the epoxy first too.
what do you have left to do on the project, just body or are there other items on the list?
if you could post up some full frontal, side and rear pics that would be great. always good to follow along and see another project in action, it keeps the rest of us fired up on our stuff.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

There are a lot of sprayed with red oxide and tucked away and now rusty projects sitting around.

My experience also says that the old way of leaving small holes in the metal when you cover the area with filler is a great way to end up with rust under the filler later. Another of those common 70's and 80's things and I remember guys saying that the filler going though the holes helped the filler stay in place better but we know different now. My 1981 rush job on chopping my cab is a prime example of why you weld up all the holes and seams.

That fender looks good, keep after it.

I dropped some parts off at the anodizer today. I like to rack them up to keep from losing them. I put string in the hole I don't want anodized. I should have them back Monday, $100.

It will probably stick out to about the middle of the pulley. My intake side of the V-12 head is on the hot chick side. I'll put a cool hole in the hood. At least it won't be in my way.
