And Dieseldawg, I hope, for your sake, the frame is clean, but I strongly recommend you take it to a reputable repair shop and have them put it on a hoist to inspect the frame from the inside out. Bending down and looking at the outside of the frame will not show any signs of the problem starting, as the rust comes from the inside and by the time you see a bubble or rust stain on the outside the damage is far worse than it looks. Don't mean to be a jerk, but I've seen dozens of these frames that the owners thought were fine until our guy started picking at it and found holes thru rails and cab and spring mounts almost ready to fall off. Yes, these are extreme cases, but unless you have it inspected you'll never know if there is a problem developing that you can have preventive measures performed to stop the advance.

First of all, yes I'm trying to get the place ready for listing for sale. But I'm probably no closer than I was back when I posted what you saw. I need to do my upper roof and work in my cellar. Everything in between is good :cool:

For me, I'm about the same distance from the Chesapeake Bay as you were from the ocean. And that's where a lot of seafood comes from. But farther inland we have some of the best fresh seafood markets. I'll be moving farther inland, closer to or in the mountains. My daughter and her family are moving back from Little Rock to Harrisonburg, VA. So maybe somewhere closer to there.

Very much!! I had inquired with a business that sells reclaimed lumber like this, doors, hardware, architectural features, etc. and he gets $28 a lineal foot. So, those beams would have been $400@ x 7 = $2,800. And oak not chestnut. I'm glad I came across that deal.

With the building being log it makes it self-supporting for the spans we will be removing. On the gable end (non bearing) I'll be removing from the door to the corner. I propped my post & beam barn up on temporary posts & beams inside, cut the posts of the barn off, poured stem walls 32'' offset from where the barn stood, and moved it over onto the new stem wall. That had a second floor with oak flooring. That took some forethought and planning, but it went very smoothly, without a hitch. I like a challenge

Thanks for the vote. Anyone can do this stuff once you grasp the principles involved. Some day I'll tell about the bank barn with a blown-out foundation I propped up and laid a new foundation up under. Jacking that huge monster of unknown weight had me very nervous. Just went real slow and checked everything repeatedly as I went. I employed safeguards, but still had my nerves tingling and my gut wrenching.

i'm jealous. I can see why you went back. Never been to the park but I rode backroads through some country that made me fall in love with that I'll never forget

You make me proud just to know someone with such skills. It's great to know where I can have my floor made when I get a street road project going ;)
