What are you thinking about?

joe231 01-31-2009 05:20 PM

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

well, i was gonna use some scrap round tube i have from work, but it is 2" and kinda big, don't care for how it looks, then I saw this
http://www.gmcpauls.com/pictures/63-...smemberraw.jpg

it is nice and under $85.....so got me thinking i could build it much cheaper, just go to metal supermarket and get the stuff......but, I think a stock one would look nice in there too and I could probably get one from pull-a-part for $10-$15.....I need to make the pieces for the e-brake also......so i should go check Carey's and see if they have a factory one..........as you can see i'm flipping and flopping like a fish out of water....add the fact i've been taking a day off a week (slow time of year) money is a bit tight as well.
should have our tax return in a couple weeks and will be able to move forward from there....

TimE 01-31-2009 05:28 PM

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

Go on down to the pull-a-part and get you one. If you change your mind later and want a different look your not out much $$ and this will keep you pushing forward on your project.

BTW, if you hurry, you could go get one today.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

I agree with Tim. Wont you have to get different e-brake cables? I remember you needed those two that got freyed anyway. I think it would be the quick and easy way. Then it would look like mine.:metal:

Yeah I hear ya.....I do need to replace the rear e-brake cables, they wore out due to the improper routing.....I need this set-up for it......i stupidly let this cross-member go when i sold my '64 and now can't seem to get a hold of the guy :banghead:

Thanks for the pic of the ebrake setup. I was wondering what mine was supposed to look like.;)

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

Have you seen this crossmember from Bowtie Overdrives?

http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=108

It has the emergency brake hardware pre-installed. Not cheap, but convenient.

yeah I have seen those, very cool, but more than I want to spend, and IMO more than it is worth

Thanks Joe, it doesn't matter but is that a long bed frame? Cause that is not a tranny xmember. I haven't seen one fro this view. I'm normally looking up at it.

yeah it is a long bed, but, that is the same holes the trans cross member uses, probably a 3 or granny four speed truck with the trans cross member under the bell housing.
just went and looked at our short bed frame, the rear trailing arm cross-member is in front of the rear cab mounts....if you didn't know, the long and short beds use the same length trailing arms...

Ebrake??? I was wondering what those cables were popping out of my rear backing plates:lol:.....my truck didnt even have the handle!!!! When I bought my 'burb I got in to go for a spin with the PO and said 'What is that thing?' meaning the handle under the column.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

I still dont have any hooked up. I guess Im not too worried after doing all the brakes myself.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

yeah, doing the auto swap, i'm not too worried about having one, but eventually it will have to be completed

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

If you have the materials and know how...then by all means it is cheaper.

Although, if you consider the R&D, the fact that it's bolt in, and the powder coating....I think the $175 isn't too bad.

You think they'll be at your upcoming swap-meet ??
