Worked on the steering linkage today and figured out that I have lots more work to do before I am happy with it...lol. Actually I need to get another ujoint that dad is going to order this week. I think that the double joint will work....I hope. Once I get that figured out then I can install the support bearing. Everything I tried I was running into something...this is as close as I got but the center joint is in a bind. Here are a couple of pictures.

Well I finally have steering.....YAAAAHOOOOO!!!!! I got all the u-joints and shafts done and actually lifted it up and ran it lock to lock a few times. I still have the support bearing brackets clamped and will weld in once we take the motor out. I am going to pull the motor so I can install the new transmission. So once we do that I will weld the brackets. Also there is a few more things I need to weld on. He is a few pictures.

Nice work on the steering. You can't go wrong with the 700r4, I have one in the garage I'm going to rebuild when I find the time. Once again looking really good man, keep up the good work. |
Re: 52 Project
when i did my steering, i considered using one of those drop units that i've seen in the Summit and Speedway catalogs, but wasn't sure how i'd support it. In the end i ended up running mine much like yours. I did have a bit more room though since my engine is mounted what appears to be a bit higher than yours.
Things are lookin' really good here. before you know it, you'll be out driving it :) |

Hey Thanks, I actually feel like I got to drive it cause the steering works now:metal:. I was just checking out your build thread. You have been busy. I only get a few hours a week to mess with this one so it is going to take a while. Take car and good luck with your build. Bernie |

Got a little out with the old in with the new this past weekend. Pulled the motor and tranny out and got the new 700R4 mounted to the motor. I need to get some help to move the cab so that I can rework the transmission cross member. I also welded in the brackets for the steering linkage. I won't be able to work on it this weekend because my youngest is graduating from High School...YaaaaHoooo!!!! Hopesully next weekend I can get that stuff done and start the body work. I think most of the fitting is done and should be coming together now...I hope. Here are a couple of pictures that I took this weekend.

Ok not a lot going on exciting. I have been doing some detail work. I needed to make some clearance for the headers and the steering linkage around the rack. The u-joint was going to rub so I notched it and filled it in with a piece of tubing. Other than that I haven't been doing to much. Been really busy with my youngest son and getting him ready to start college in the fall. My dad is going to paint these reworked areas this week so maybe I can get the motor in its final resting spot and start with the brake, fuel and power steering lines. Here are a couple of pictures of what I have been up to.

Re: 52 Project
Bernie can you tell me what thickness of sheet metal you used? (assuming that is how it is bought?) I have some floor patching and not sure what to ask for at Metal Mart.:mm:

Hey on the frame I think it was 10ga but if you are repairing the floor I think something thinner like 16 or 20 ga would be enough. I think 16 is .059 thick and I can't remember how thick the 20 is. Good luck. Bernie |
