Thanks for the PM, that confirms what I was thinking. I didn't really want to do anything above the rail since the inner fenders don't cover that spot, but if I have to then I have to. |
Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Got one side roughed in tonight. I decided to cut all the holes out and just use plate to fill in the sides. Should look cleaner when it's done that way.
Laid out more precise cut lines. http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8dd28598.jpg Cut out. http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps189c60f1.jpg Welded back in place. I need to get some plate steel to fill in the hole. http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0f184c8c.jpg I mentioned earlier that I was doing some wheel and suspension changes on the VW. Just got the thin porta-walls in today. I built the front wheels using 15x5.5 Porsche 911/912 steel rims, and welded in the VW centers. The rears will be 7" made by welding 3" bands into the original 4" wheels. Gotta get adjustable rear spring plates to lower it a little more, pick out tires, and paint the rear wheels. Need a mild rear sway bar too. If I can get it all done in time I want to take it to Goodguys Charlotte and try out the autocross track. http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...pscb4e8b26.jpg http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps96ed38d3.jpg |

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Got the frame on a cart so I can move it by myself, and I'm not working on the floor anymore. Made filler plates for the drop section, welded them in, then smoothed the welds. Should get to do the other side tomorrow. I ordered 5/32" plate from McMaster Carr to fill in the blank spots, nobody locally had that size.

Other side is finished. Checked the fit of the crossmember, the bottom is level with the frame rails now. Shouldn't scrape the LCA shafts as badly now. http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...29028483_n.jpg http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...psb1cc0f1f.jpg |

Nice fab work! Looks like its coming along nicely. :metal:

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Looks good way better finish work on your welding than I did on ours. I was going for function or form...LOL.
I switched to PB Forward arms and I don't think they will hit before the crossmember does. I will have to look again under ours. |
Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Is this thing on the road yet or are you still playing with imports???

Would be interested in seeing how much clearance there is under there at ride height! A-arms and spindles are my next step. Quote:

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Stopped by the Inglese booth at Goodguys this past weekend and ordered the intake, was hoping that by waiting I could get a show discount. $70 bucks off and free shipping. :metal: Also ordered a pair of front CTS-V/Brembo 6 piston calipers. Both should be here by Friday.
Last night I bought a boom for my granddad's old 8N, and tonight I finished building a cab mount so I can move the cab by myself. Next up is notching the crossmember to clear the oil pan, then reassembling the cab on the frame to check for carb clearance with the new manifold. I'm not worried too much about the carbs but I've got an idea for an air cleaner that might need more room than what's available. http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...56707339_n.jpg |
Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Nice score! I wanted to buy an IR intake from Inglese as well, but they don't make one for my engine (even though its been advertised on their site for years). Custom fab from sheetmetal only at something like 5K for the intake alone! Needless to say I changed my mind.
You do very detailed work! Keep giving updates and if you're up to it, I would love to see the Weber carb rebuild when you get around to it! |

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
I just have a BBC with rectangle port heads. Apparently no one makes the manifolds and haven't for a while. I heard a rumor that someone was going to start making them again, but that hasn't come to fruition.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for the IDA rebuild! |

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
The manifold and calipers came today. Moved the frame into it's permanent spot for the winter, so I'll level it and move on to building the A-arms. Still haven't found a source for bare 73-87 LCA shafts at a reasonable price so I'm going to LKQ tomorrow to dig around.
The calipers are huge. I've seen them on a CTS-V before but their size can't be fully appreciated until they're off the car. Over a foot long! http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...45454850_n.jpg http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7b056eb9.jpg The intake, has a plenum built into the bottom to even out vacuum pulses to the distributor, or MAP sensor in this case. http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...35591168_n.jpg http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8bdcee36.jpg Moved the cab using the boom lift, needs a couple kinks worked out (center pivot and stops to keep the cab from sliding off) but it works. http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9c63f739.jpg And a teaser shot. http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6132b583.jpg |

Thats one of your modified valve covers. One of the trickest mods I've ever seen.
|
Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Very nice. The intake spurs a question tho....doesn't the plenum take away some of the benefit of running independent throttle bodies? I thought reverberation and its effect on other cylinders... was part of the issue that running individuals works to correct?
Those calipers are huge! |

whoa! nice work on all of it the teaser pic is killer

Cab is back on the frame and engine is dropped in. Will pick up some plate steel to notch the crossmember this week.

That teaser pick is great! Should be one of the best looking LS motors out there!

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Thanks guys! I started cutting the notch out of the crossmember tonight but ran out of wheels for the big cut-off grinder. Will grab more tomorrow and get back at it.

Re: Project Goldilocks, '66 C10 SWB BBW Build
Cut the crossmember tonight, and with my amazing blueprint drafting skills I drew up plans for the filler piece. Drawn to exact scale, of course... :haha: I'll have a fab shop bend a single piece of 3/16" steel instead of welding separate pieces together. Hopefully they can read my handwriting and get it done this week.
