Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Nice work Matt. You can weld in the fuel door, just go slow. Heck, why not just get one of those billet ricer type gas doors? It'll match your no sleeve shirts and flat billed hats..........

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got some parts in.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps0da2fa23.jpg Got the sending unit, 3/4" pipe thread plug with weld in fitting for a drain in the bottom of the tank, also got some 1/2" T-bolts for the fuel tank straps (Yeah probably over kill, but this thing is called "The Tank" haha), also got a vent for the tank, but thinking about using a different setup already because with this vent just mounted on the tank I could easily overfill the tank and this vent wouldnt work. Thinking about putting an AN fitting in the tank and get some hose and mount a filter up higher on the bed or something like that because Dieselwrencher gave me a couple more different ideas for filling the tank that I plan on looking at today. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
You should just get an antirollover vent from a place like speedway motors. That way if the DOT ever checks, it will be legal.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yeah I will look into those.
Test fitted the tank. Gotta cut the rear cross member out and weld it in and then get some angle iron for the front of the tank for its mount. Not sure what to run as a buffer between the tank and the cross member mounts. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps93aeb4e4.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
On my gas tank I had an 1/8" thick old tractor tire inner tube that I cut into strips and used those to cushion it from squeaking.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
looks like a roll over vent in the picture?

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Today I started messing around with the cross members for the tank. Need to get it basically mounted so I can figure out where to best put all the fittings for my tank.
Rear cross member http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps11ac5683.jpg Front cross member http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psd2275819.jpg over view of how the tank sets in the frame http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psfc2d044d.jpg Kinda what my mount situation will look like http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps868e3dbb.jpg You can see the steel plate i have at the back of the tank, that will be cut in half and welded to the top of the rear cross member. It will be where the tank pushes up on when the straps are tightened down. The front cross member is a piece of angle iron so the tank will push up against that. I am also looking at ways to fill the tank. Right now I am looking at using the stock filler and mount it in under the drivers side bed rail kinda like so. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps9ef49712.jpg I then plan on making a box that looks like this for housing the stock filler. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psee53023f.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Messed around with the tank some more today. got the front cross member tacked in and then started working on the tank straps.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psfeae62dd.jpg Front mounts started for straps. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps32c98685.jpg Rear mounts have yet to be finished. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps938c81c0.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
fancy drawin' program you got there!
the straps are looking good. are you going to weld that wrapper back to the flat bar where it wraps the T-bolts? |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yes I am. I just want to make sure they are right before I weld them.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well today I got the rear tank strap mounts made and tacked on and the tank is now supported by the straps!
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps020f57dd.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps724f4a2f.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps6b941f55.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps5f2c2caf.jpg Also rolled the frame out of the shop to clean the shop up, snapped some pictures so you can see the whole frame. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps091e8d4f.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf247996c.jpg Only got half of my shop cleaned, its starting to look like its going to rain and didnt want the drivetrain to get rained on. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps4802effb.jpg Now I just need to make sure I know what size I need for all my fittings and know how many I need. Then weld those in and weld the top on and I will pressure test it then. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well i got some more stuff done on the truck today and managed to spend my whole last pay check on some more parts.
Ground down the ugly ass welds that I had on the outside of the tank. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps3daad8b8.jpg I then moved on to make the rear sway bar work again. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps6162d10c.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf68824bb.jpg I order new brake lines tonight as well and I needed to get the shocks mounted where I wanted them before I got the brake lines and started running them so I also got the shocks tacked up today. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psab1f6530.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps8419d1f6.jpg Should be getting some parts in next week and be able to finish up the fuel tank and then I will probably be broke and have nothing to do for a while haha |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Looking great Matt!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Thanks for the idea on the fuel tank filler :) I've been having the hardest time trying to decide where to mount mine since I've done my burban tank swap.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Been looking at ways to mount the turbo and I think I have kinda came up with a plan. Before I really get into it I need to stick my cab and a front clip on the truck to make sure I have enough room for my idea. Pretty sure it will have to move forward a little bit tho.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps784827b2.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psfaf452c7.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps7e668890.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps0eba4add.jpg Hoping to make a mount that comes off of the exhaust flange that ties into the motor and then a bracket going down from that to around where the motor mount bolts. Then 5" exhaust out the wheel well back to my 8" stack that I will be running. |

If done right stacks are awesome! I mean, what's cooler than big shiny chrome pipes spewing black smoke out of the top? :metal:

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Sweet build man, I don't know how I missed it, going to be one hell of a truck.
I am always glad to see another classic Chevy with a Cummins sitting between the fenders. |

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well have not been able to mess with the truck that much as I have wanted, but for good reasons. All I got done today was the fitting for the fuel outlet on the tank. I put it on the drivers side and put it at the rear end of the sump.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psa62b5f62.jpg Hose end fitting screwed on. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps82930955.jpg Hopefully I can get some more time soon so I can get the two returns welded into the top of the tank and weld the top onto the tank and pressure test it. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Looking good buddy!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Worked on the fuel tank some more today. Its getting really close.
Got my drain welded in the bottom. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps9f8a75ef.jpg Got the two return line fittings in and also the auxiliary tank fitting as well. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps5caf5dda.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps760d5b97.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf15413a4.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Nice job on the tank man. Pretty ambitious building your own. I wouldn't trust myself

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got the tank all welded up and got it pressure tested. Did some more work on the tank straps and wanted to make sure everything fit good so I stuck the tank in the truck.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc8eff2b2.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psa0496580.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps71546cd1.jpg Looks like everything fits just the way that I wanted it to. Going to start working on the filler neck some time soon and get the brake lines made and I should be able to start tearing the truck back down so I can finish up some welding and start spraying some paint. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I started relocating my rear shocks but I am not sure exactly where I should mount them. I have two places that I think will work best, but not sure which is better.
I first started making them mount here. It will clear everything with new top mounts. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps02064d6b.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps3f03a5cd.jpg But after making the lower bracket for mounting there I decided to look at mounting them back inside the frame. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps9820468a.jpg Now on this setup the top bolt would be turned to match the bottom one. One reason why I like them behind the axle and on the outside of the frame is that it will allow for me to have more room to make an anti-wrap bar. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got the shocks for the rear mounted.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps17e41314.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc0225928.jpg Next is to work on getting the proportioning valve mounted and getting the brake lines made for the frame. Then I should be about ready to tear it apart and finish a lot of welding and paint the frame. |
