Looks awesome I think I like the 6.0 badge under the Cheyenne 20 better. I have to touch up the orange paint on my Cheyenne badge would you have a color to try

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
OK, So got another set of decal made up for the engine cover. Had the little lady massage them on and they turned out fantastic. Amazing how some small ticket items can really make a difference.
http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8wriuoop.jpg http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...pskwpnhk0h.jpg And the finished product! http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3fxd35go.jpg I was going to paint the cover with gloss trim paint, but kinda like the stock sheen it has going on. Any opinions on that? |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
I vote for the stock sheen. All these finishing touches are making a big difference - kind of taking it from "that's a really nice truck" to "man, I want my truck to look like that!".

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Loving this build.. I have got to get mine out of the weeds and do something w it.

So, I have been chasing an intermittent coolant leak and finally it has begun to be a more consistent leak. The water pump is gonna need to be replaced. No big deal as I was going to have to install the new AC bracket setup so might as well get it out of the way and do it all at the same time. I'm actually happy it happened when it did. At least I can drive her from here on out knowing I have a new AC Delco pump on there. This week I should be able to wrap up the odds and ends I have had to deal with. I was able to re-locate the wheel spacers and it eliminated about 50 percent of the vibration, but not all. I may need to have a custom set made and or check the driveshaft for balance. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
New Holley AC brackets installed. I am very impressed with the engineering on these. Fit together nicely and looks like a stock setup. After install, not a squeak from the belt.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
What brackets did you have before that caused the sqeeeek. I'm using the brackets from Vintage Air.

I never liked that setup but at the time I think it was the only setup available for our trucks. Now there are many to raise the compressors away from the frame. I will see how the Holley setup performs over time and report back. I have heard some people have had good luck with the kwik setup. I am just not one of them. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
I will keep my finger crossed I don't have issues.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
This past week I was able to finish off the truck gremlins. I installed the new ecu in the vintage air unit which fixed the blower issue. Now I have heat and soon AC. Just in time :) I got the speedometer set correctly and the new water pump fixed my leak. Ahhhhhhh. So, to celebrate I purchased some LED bulbs for the cargo, courtesy, tag, glovebox and AC controls to complete the LED bulb replacements. Now the entire interior is LED. I used superbrightled.com as my source. They have about every bulb imaginable in LED.
After getting the interior finished up, my speakers sounded pretty anemic. The custom steel trim panels for speakers behind the seats look great, but offer little in terms of speaker sound reinforcement. I needed to enclose them. I built 2 steel enclosures off of a template to seal up the area behind the speakers and that seems to have been the trick. It improved sound a lot. I do need to add a single subwoofer to the system and that shouldn't be a problem with the enclosure I built behind the seat. I just need to upgrade the amp to drive everything. That will be a bit as the amp is expensive. As for the vibration, I took the driveshaft off and back to the company that modified it for me. They checked it for balance and it was 3/8 off. Bingo!!! They fixed it for free. I reinstalled it and the vibration is gone. Hopefully there isn't something going on that throws it out of balance. If there is I have never heard of that happening. Bad yoke etc.?? who knows. What a difference though now as it's soooo much smoother to drive. Now that I have some confidence in the truck, I started testing the power a little bit. On sunday, I hammered the pedal at a stop light and much to my surprise, broke the tires loose and got pretty sideways. The LS motors are just amazing. Reliable, decent mileage and plenty of power in reserve. couldn't be happier with that decision. |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
woohoo! All great news.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
That's good to hear the gremlins are gone. the truck looks great.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
A few tidbits to report
Well, as I think I mentioned prior, the stereo was a little anemic so I upgraded the amp and added a subwoofer to the stereo system. http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...psz4xk4g1n.jpg http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...pspwlyg5dq.jpg I ordered a 4 channel amp JL Audio and JL 8" sub to compliment the 6.5" speakers behind the seats. This definitely did the trick. I of course had to modify the box behind the seat so Modify I did. http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...ps41kkfbjm.jpg I made a bump out on both drivers and passengers sides. Behind the passengers seat I made a small sealed box for the sub. Behind the drivers seat I made a small compartment for the scissor jack and handle so it can be grabbed easily with the seat slid forward. It all fits perfectly and really happy now with sound and accessibility of the jack. Almost like it was meant to be there all along. :) So, now just enjoy for a while longer before the snow creeps up on us. Chris |

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Hi everybody and Happy New Year to all!
Well, had some down time and decided to get back into the vibration issues on Reno. Yes, It's back. Today I replaced the wheel spacers with billet pieces and once drilled they fit tight with little to know movement whatsoever. Since I had the driveshaft re-balanced and that solved the issue for a bit, but worsened over time, I was told it might be a warped yoke. So, next I pulled the driveshaft and inspected the rear transfer case yoke. I put the truck in gear and ran it in first gear while underneath watching the yoke spin. It did have a little wobble. Next I removed the yoke and watched the shaft. It was true. i ordered a replacement 1310 yoke, so will try that. I wanted to upgrade the axle shafts as well, but those will be last resort. http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...&1453932949002 http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...pssod7lt5w.jpg http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...psfoftacbd.jpg |

I decided I might as well get these last few things taken care of while the truck is in cold storage this winter. Hopefully one of these two things is the culprit. Once it warms up a bit I am going to get back into the interior, well door panels and console to be specific, and do some more wood treatment. For now though, working on the smooth non-vibratory ride. Chris |

Hi Chris. here are the drawings I did. Hope this helps. I thought they might be as confusing as the Novak site directions? My system is still working well. Best clutch pedal feel I have ever had.
Good luck Chris |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Ok Chris, been some time since there's been an update on this thread. I need a little better closure on this  I think you need to post at least a few pictures of how the truck's being used, or places it has taken you to. Help a guy out, please

I try and drive the truck at least 2-3 times a month to keep it happy and enjoy the fruits of all those years labor. I continue to upgrade when time, but just had a little one, my first, and time is less of a surplus than before her arrival. I did get a square body sway bar setup for the truck and plan to install as soon as I finish rebuilding my jeep's motor. I also still intend to upgrade the interior with more woodwork, but that will have to wait till next Summer. With the miles I have put on the truck I have had zero issues. It rides great and runs smooth as can be. The motor could use a few more horses for my taste so a cam will likely be put in this coming Summer as well. So here's some pics of the summer fun. http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4gos8vvb.jpg http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...psajkonde0.jpg http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6pt5pths.jpg http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...psaacbmdki.jpg http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/...pssjbjkbgy.jpg |

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Do you happen to have the belt length or part number you used handy ? I have been having problems finding one that gets the belt tensioner in the right position. I am in between sizes so far and have followed holleys specific pulleys.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Your are correct. The belt suggestion for the Holley setup is extremely tight. I will check my setup and give you the belt # I used.

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
Chris, I'm very impressed with your build. I won't say something silly like the Montana body shop did you a favor by hanging on to your truck for 3 years. But I have the feeling that it wouldn't have come together to your standards. And you might have ended up taking it all back apart anyway. Really, really nice truck. And very well executed. Thanks for taking the time to detail your work process on it. You used some products that I am very interested in. Things I was wondering how I was going to handle. So thanks for the help too. Keep us posted, even if it's just to show how you're using the truck. After reading the whole thread, kinda get attached to the rig, ya know?
Congrats on the little one too, Chris |

Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
***UPDATES***
so, been up to some more updating of the Project Reno build. I purchased a square body sway bar setup a while back and am just now getting to installing it. More details to come on that front. I also have had some ongoing issues with my rebuilt steering box from Napa. It was great when first installed, but got worse and worse and worse. So I bit the bullet and purchased a red-head steering gear with the 15:1 ratio. Wow! is all I can say. It steers like a completely different truck. Sharp concise and a pleasure to drive now. Highly recommend. I am however plagued with power steering pump line leak issues. I have tried everything to stop the leakage, teflon liquid, rtv, teflon tape. I am still getting dripping after each drive. Suggestions are much appreciated. It is adapted, so maybe that is the issue. I am about to braze the whole deal and say hell with it. In addition to the steering upgrades, I have decided to dump the flow master Super 44's. They sound too much like glass packs. Had I know, would never have had them installed. I will be updating the exhaust this fall probably with a new muffler and will probably re-route exhaust out sides not rear of truck or dumping. Thinking about original FM40's or Spintech. Also, I have purchased a set of 799 LS heads off a 5.3 to increase my compression. I will be going through these to refresh and install with a cam once I have decided what to go with. Just looking for a little more punch in the low rpm range. The truck still runs great and have been showing a good amount. At least till the paint starts to look like crap. I will be at Carlisle PA again this August at the trucks show. Should be a lot of fun. More pics to come as I decide how to install the sway bar setup. I have seen some nice solutions out there. Just need to choose. I will do a writeup as well on the motor upgrades. Install, cam choice, results etc. Hope everyone is having a great summer! |
Re: Project Reno - 72 cheyenne rebuild
ttt...Well, been ages since on here, but since I have a new garage in the works, thought I might check in and start planning updates to Project Reno.
The truck has been mothballed for a couple years now with the purchase of a new home in combination with fan/wiring issues on cooling system setup. So planning some extensive upgrades to cooling system, engine internals and transmission/clutch. More to come hopefully in 2023. Have a great holiday to all. Chris |
