Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Starting to collect parts for the resto on the Dana60 front axle. Ordered up a new set of rotors as the ones on it now are really rusty. I will save the originals and possibly have them turned later on, there's a lot of beef on em! Thinking of maybe upgrading to a set of Warn lock outs, anybody have any trouble restoring a good set of original 1 ton lock outs?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Got the new rotors today from Advance Auto. Look real good! Anybody done this rebuild lately?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Researching on upgrading to a 4 core radiator when I redo the motor. Have picked up some nice 4 core upper and lower mounts with rubbers, and a new core support. Looks like I will have to modify the new support on the bottom to mount up a 4 core. Not a problem there, just wondering if anyone has done this? Any advice here?

New Year is coming on fast, Wife wants part of basement back, so started moving the K5 parts stash out to the pole barn today. Got a lot moved, pole barn is a mess, but her basement looks better! One more day and I might just find the pool table in the basement!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Almost ready to start the torsion box, rocker panels, floor panels, rear bed panel, etc replacement process. I understand most of the process- leave top installed, install new body mounts, line up all door, tailgate, etc. Have purchased almost all replacement weld in Triplus parts from Wes at Heartbeat.com Has anyone in northern Mi. done this on a 1st. Gen K5? Just sending a message out there to someone near me in Mi that might be willing to help me out with my project. It's now 2012 and I need to move forward, I have a huge stash of parts ready to go on. I just need someone close willing to help with fabrication, anybody?

Asking again, anyone here in Michigan done a resto on a 1st. Gen? I am not a welder, and want to find someone that has done this and understands the AtoZ of the 1st. Gen Blazer geometry as far as welding in new parts goes. Trying to save cash for this next step and need to find someone that can help me with this. Got almost all the stuff to weld in, need help!

Thank's VA! I'll know more when it gets here. I did buy it off e-bay, ya never know! Have been looking at this upgrade for a while, and the price was way better!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Spent some time going through the "pile" of resto parts tonight. Lined up all the new poly body mounts from Jim Carter classic parts, the bolts, shims, washers, and nuts from LMC. Looks like I have what I need to start to replace the body mounts before I start the process of welding in the replacement panels. I think this is the first step in the floor/torsion box weld in process right?

turp mcspray 02-11-2012 11:20 PM

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Yep, install your body mounts, make sure your doors fit the bedsides, and rockers. Start by putting all the factory shims back where they were. Don't be afraid to change them if things aren't fitting quite right.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Just ordered up a set of DIY4X EZ-INCH's for the 14bolt rear. Thinking I might need them when the shackle flip goes in to help center the axle. Looked at ORD's and seemed like DIY4X's was the same setup for less money. Not sure if I would need to run some degree shims also? Thinking not, because going with weld on spring perches anyway. Thought's?

Are you going to be doing a High angle driveline or CV shaft soon? If so dont bother welding up your perches until you get your shaft. The driveline side has to point right at the t-case

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Yes Sir, I am planning on running HAD shafts frt and rear. Thank you for that tip! Hoped to slap in some sort of stock 1 ton shafts for temporary, and swap in the HAD stuff when funds allow. As soon as spring comes, hope to get the 1 tons in and mocked up.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Anybody got pic's of a 14 bolt with the ez-inch installed? Got the weld on rear springs perches,ez-inches,upper u-bolt plates, all from DIY4X. Also the DIY4X shackle flip, think I have it all figured out. Just looking for some 1st gen pic's before I get started!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Still trying to mock up the 14 bolt weld on rear spring perches, the ez-inch's, and the upper u-bolt plates, all from DIY4X. The center bolt that came with the ez-inch kit does not fit right in the holes of the weld on perches, I can make them fit but just wondering why they do not fit right? Also, the two bolts DIY4X sent with are kinda short for the weld on perch. Also, checked the drivers/left side stock spring perch of my used Dana 60 front axle and the center bolt hole is egged out big time. Went and ordered up a new one from Kert at DIY4X. Anybody have any info on this,or pic's to help me out here?

3rd pic down on my thread.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=430008

Mount the shackle flips, bolt in the leaf springs , tighten everything down and bolt on the axle while keeping the perches "unwelded".

put the weight of the truck on the axle, then rotate up the pinion until it points at the back of the t-case. (make sure your u-bolts are tight for safety sake)
then tear it all apart and weld them on.

If you give me a few days I'll be updating my thread. I'm working on finishing the front axle this weekend, the rear is in and finished.

Ballistic Fab: D60/14b diff covers, Double shear crossover high steer arm kit, 3/4 heim DOM steering kit w/misalignment spacers,

High Angle Driveline: 1350 rear driveshaft with 1350 CV, rear np205 flange kit (will buy the emergency np205 brake kit at a later date as well as the front 1350 driveshaft with 1350 CV), 14b 1350 "u-bolt style" pinion

H2 17" rims w/ 07-10 silverado center caps, 35" Hankook Dynapro MT RT03's, 73-87 1/2 ton 2wd 52" leaf springs front and rear

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Just ordered up 2 more replacement panels from WES at classic heartbeat. Got the front lower quarter patch panels, just behind the ds and ps doors coming. Still trying to figure out why the new center bolts that came with my DIY4X EZ-inches don't fit right into my DIY4X weld on rear spring perches for the 14 bolt 1 ton axle? The center bolt is designed to go through the spring pack and set into the hole in the spring perch right? I guess I just don't get it? I understand the weld on spring mounts have 3 holes in them to help center the axle, but the spring center bolt does not fit right in any of the holes in the weld on mounts? Any ideas?

Haven't done any of the 4x stuff like you are or I'd help...sounds like you're going to be ready to jump into this project with both feet this spring with all the parts you've collected!!!

Thank's for watching here VA! Yes, I have been doing my research and hope to have everything ready to get it set up this spring/summer. I know how I want it to work, and look, and all the help from this great site makes it that much easier!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

I had the same problem after a spring rebuild with new center pins. Just shave down the diameter on a bench grinder, untill they fit in the holes.

swyfor5 02-26-2012 05:03 PM

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Thank's Turp. I knew I could make them fit, as they are real close to fitting . Am thinking it is the holes in the weld on perches that are a little too small. I know it doesn't take much paint or etc to close the tolerances. Just needed some advice from the great bunch of members here! Thank's again.

Well, sorry guy's, no new pic's as of yet. I did get the quarter panels from WES,and the drivers side dana60 weld on spring perch. Nice quarter patch panels, but are made in R.O.C as most of the rest of the keyparts I have bought from WES. Also got the new digital camera, so will try and get ya some new pic's of the parts pile soon!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Ok, again no new pic's. Really looking at the TrailReady HD17x8-1/2" beadlock wheels. Just wondering about the back spacing. Going with the Dana60 front, and the 14 bolt rear-w/disc conversion, will the 3.5" back space clear? Don't want to order up these wheels and find out they wont clear the calipers and etc? Anybody got advice here?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Ordered up a bunch of new parts from WES, and some more digital camera stuff, pic's to follow! Organizing all my inventory so far, and it will take some time! A lot of stuff to go through, sorry for the slow progress on this thread. Been working on my rear hatch replacement setup, and it is a major resto! Redone most of the parts for the resto, pic's soon!

Caliper clearance will not be an issue with a 17" wheel... back spacing is part preference... Although with crossover steering the new arm needs the clear the wheel you should probably have the axle assembled and take measurements before ordering wheels...

Thank's MCM. I like that wheel a lot, but might go with a black outer ring to go along with my mostly "black out" look.
